Remo Williams is the protagonist of The Destroyer, a series of action novels. A former Newark, New Jersey, police officer, he is recruited as an assassin for CURE, a secret American organization that protects the country through operations outside ordinary legal limits. His teacher, Chiun, trains him in Sinanju, a Korean martial discipline that develops extraordinary control of the body and senses.

[1]

Appearance and manner

The first novel describes Remo as having light-brown hair shaved close at the temples, deep-set brown eyes, and sharp features. He rarely laughs and chain-smokes. After his staged execution, surgeons straighten his broken nose and remove flesh below his cheekbones; electrolysis pushes back his hairline.

[2]

Early life and recruitment

The orphanage records in Last Rites describe a weeks-old baby left in a basket at the doorstep of Saint Theresa’s Orphanage under the name Remo Williams. Sister Mary Margaret Morrow, who helped raise him there, later recognizes his voice and recalls an unnamed tall, lean man leaving him. Remo remembers Sister Mary’s lessons about Theseus and the labyrinth while surviving a similar trap in Athens. Chiun later identifies Remo’s father as Sunny Joe Roam. Roam says Remo’s mother died soon after childbirth and that he left his infant son at an orphanage; he says he named the boy after his own stage name, William S. Rome. Remo finds a desert headstone bearing Dawn Starr Roam’s name and recognizes it by instinct as his mother’s. In a later dream he encounters her under that name.

[3]

Before CURE, Remo served as a Marine in Vietnam and later became a police officer in Newark, New Jersey. Conn MacCleary, a CURE operative who had noticed Remo’s ability in Vietnam, arranged to recruit him by framing him for a drug dealer’s murder. Remo was convicted and sentenced to execution. MacCleary supplied a pill and instructions for a staged escape; the execution was altered, Remo was pronounced dead, and accomplices revived him after removing him from prison. Remo accepted recruitment after MacCleary admitted his part in the frame-up.

[4]

Work for CURE

CURE is a covert organization operating outside ordinary law, directed by Harold W. Smith from Folcroft Sanatorium. Smith assigns Remo to carry out enforcement operations, often alongside Chiun. CURE uses false records and temporary cover identities for his work, including those of a security director, a writer, and a racketeer. Remo refuses Smith’s order to kill the badly injured MacCleary, declines a presidential request to retrieve a weapon, and kills a defendant after an acquittal without Smith’s authorization.

[5]

Remo’s CURE service changes over time. After ten years, he resigns when the organization’s mission changes. In another story, he says he has done his time, paid his dues, and is quitting CURE; Chiun invites him to undergo the Rite of Attainment. A separate novel describes him as having left CURE while pursuing an escaped target. He later reunites with Chiun and argues that they should keep working for America.

[6]

Remo addresses Chiun as “Little Father” and jokes about being his son; Chiun answers with teasing criticism. Later narration describes Remo as Chiun’s spiritually adopted son and as a brother to Song, Chiun’s deceased biological son. Remo calls Harold W. Smith “Smitty,” using a familiar nickname for the director who assigns his missions.

[7]

Remo repeatedly faces Nuihc, Chiun’s nephew and former pupil, whose schemes draw both men into challenges. Another opponent is Mr. Gordons, a machine capable of fabricating a human-shaped body; an encounter at O’Hare forces Remo to withdraw after his first technique fails. Jeremiah Purcell, the assassin known as the Dutchman, is trained by Nuihc to kill Chiun. Remo later confronts Purcell during the Time of Succession.

[8]

Sinanju training and abilities

Chiun trains Remo in Sinanju, the martial tradition associated with the Korean village of that name. Remo is Chiun’s pupil and, in later books, his successor as Reigning Master. The narration in Target of Opportunity describes him as a spiritual rather than blood heir; Last Rites later gives Chiun’s account of his family’s Sinanju ancestry. His training develops attention to breath, perception, and involuntary bodily processes. One early exercise shows Remo lowering his pulse; a later breathing practice restores his balance and senses after a setback.

[9]

Training is difficult and sometimes painful. Early on, Remo resists Chiun’s food rules: after refusing fish and other dishes, he is lectured for wasting rice. He is impatient with Chiun’s insistence that mastery comes “in due time.” Later injuries also expose the discipline’s physical demands: anger disrupts Remo’s technique and breaks a bone in his hand, while a severe wound threatens to set back his training. Chiun treats and coaches him through such setbacks.

[10]

In one case Remo overcomes a poison by increasing oxygen in his blood; in another he says he used a Sinanju technique to cause amnesia. A device that alters sensory perception can disorient him and Chiun, and severe wounds can threaten his progress in training.

[11]

Remo’s trained senses let him follow movements that ordinary observers see only as a blur. A training flashback shows Chiun firing several kinds of guns at him until he learns to see bullets in flight and evade ricochets. Amnesia later leaves his last conscious memory in Vietnam, and he temporarily fears bullets. After Chiun reminds him of his training, Remo reflexively evades a shot during the prisoner rescue.

[12]

Remo also crosses bodies of water without swimming. In Timber Line, he walks over Lake Erie, matching his movements to the water’s crests and troughs before leaping onto a pier. The narration emphasizes concentration and the greater ease of working with cold, dense water.

[13]

Family and relationships

Sunny Joe Roam, also called Bill Roam, is identified as Remo’s father. Roam performs as William S. Rome, the stage name from which he says Remo’s name came. In Chiun’s account, both Roam and Remo descend from Kojong the Lost, a Sinanju Master who left the village; Roam knows him as Ko Jong Oh. Remo later lives with his father on the Sun On Jo reservation and crosses the Crying River to be invested as the next Sunny Joe, a family and community role separate from the Sinanju succession.

[14]

Jilda is Remo’s former lover and the mother of his daughter Freya. Their relationship develops during Master’s Challenge. Remo travels with Jilda and Emrys ap Llewellyn to undertake the Master’s Trial, which they later reject; Emrys’s son Griffith is present at their decision. Remo asks Jilda to marry him. Jilda chooses to remain with Griffith, and Remo and Chiun return to the United States by submarine. Chiun later tells Remo that Jilda is pregnant. Much later, Jilda refuses to join Remo while he remains in CURE, though she says she will consider Freya’s Sinanju training if both want it. Remo accepts Freya when Jilda identifies her as his daughter.

[15]

Mah-Li becomes Remo’s intended bride during his time in Sinanju. At their later ceremony, a child arrives and calls Remo “Daddy”; Chiun invalidates the wedding because Remo is not a virgin. Jilda then appears and Remo recognizes her. Mah-Li leaves. Remo and Chiun later find her dead; Chiun concludes that the Dutchman killed her, although the killing itself is not shown.

[16]

Remo meets Jean Rice at Castle Sinanju, where she tells him she has won the lottery. They go on a date, and Chiun jokingly declares them married; the exchange is not presented as a legal marriage. Remo recalls Jean in Bamboo Dragon.

[17]

Remo recognizes two children in later books: Freya, whose mother is Jilda, and Winston, introduced as Winston Smith, whom he calls his son. Winston rejects “Smith” as his real surname and chooses the name Winner. The books give different accounts of Winston’s origin. Smith first says he arranged for nurse Deborah Dean to be inseminated with Remo’s semen to create a reserve operative; Remo and Winston reject Smith’s account. Later, Remo acknowledges Winston as his son but says their paternity is rumored and has not been DNA-tested. A still later disclosure says CURE retained semen samples, which were dead, while Judith White claims to have used Remo’s frozen blood and skin; the account does not explain her method, and her pregnancy’s outcome is not shown.

[18]

Jilda introduces Freya to Remo in Line of Succession, where Freya calls him “Daddy” and he accepts her as his daughter. A later Toronto kindergarten epilogue has Freya identify Jilda as her mother and Remo as her father. In White Water, Remo remembers her as seven when he last saw her and estimates that she is now thirteen. He revives her after she is trapped beneath rubble and takes her to Sunny Joe, where she reunites with Winner. Jilda dies during the same conflict.

[19]

Shiva and the night-tiger prophecy

Chiun identifies Remo with the white night tiger of Sinanju prophecy and with Shiva, the Hindu god of destruction. Remo initially denies being Shiva when asked about words he has recited from memory. Chiun later writes that Remo fulfills the prophecy and interprets an extraordinary episode as Shiva taking over his pupil. During the Time of Succession in Father to Son, Remo declares the Shiva identity; narration describes him as owning those words for the first time. Afterward, Remo still says he remains himself and cannot explain the experience.

[20]

Succession in Sinanju

Chiun’s plans for Remo’s succession include several trials and postponements. Remo accepts his plan to stay in Sinanju and succeed Chiun, who calls him the new Reigning Master but postpones the formal ceremony. In Last Rites, after Remo completes the final test, Chiun bows to him as the future Reigning Master; Remo has not yet taken office. A later novel calls Remo a Transitional Reigning Master while Chiun continues to teach and assess him.

[21]

The Time of Succession culminates in Remo’s formal investiture as Reigning Master. The following novel calls Chiun the former Reigning Master; a later book gives him the title Master Emeritus. By Political Pressure, Remo is described as the Reigning Master and Chiun as Emeritus, with Remo’s accession still recent. Chiun remains Remo’s teacher and companion, and they continue working together after the transfer of the office.

destroyer-066:remo: Book 1 explicitly names Remo Williams as a former Newark policeman recruited to CURE (witness:00000002:ch01:p0001), and its opening establishes the specific Newark-police-to-CURE transition. Book 66’s Remo is likewise the CURE operative trained by Chiun; this is a strong series-role bridge, not a short-name match alone. Lead inspected the proposed primary contexts; supplementary direct identifying anchors replace incidental context where needed. destroyer-094:remo-williams: Same full-named CURE operative and Newark-police backstory. Lead inspected these bounded primary contexts; this is an identity decision, not a third full reading. (witness:00000276:ch02:p0001; witness:00000276:ch09:p0123; witness:00000234:ch19:p0090).

destroyer-101:remo-williams: The reviewed local role identifies the same recurring CURE field operative and student/successor of Chiun. Book-specific age, rank, actions, reported origins and scope stay in the observation; none becomes a universal trait. Both reader lanes and bounded lead review are now accepted for101. (witness:00000297:ch03:p0018; witness:00000297:ch02:p0001; witness:00000002:ch10:p0001; witness:00000002:ch12:p0075).

destroyer-102:remo-williams: The reviewed local role identifies the same recurring CURE field operative and student/successor of Chiun. Book-specific age, rank, actions, reported origins and scope stay in the observation; none becomes a universal trait. Both reader lanes and bounded lead review are accepted for102. destroyer-103:remo-williams: The reviewed local role identifies the same recurring CURE field operative and student/successor of Chiun. Book-specific age, rank, actions, reported origins and scope stay in the observation; none becomes a universal trait. Separate first and independent readings and bounded lead checks are now accepted. (witness:00000303:ch02:p0001; witness:00000303:ch10:p0001; witness:00000303:ch20:p0043; witness:00000002:ch10:p0001; witness:00000002:ch12:p0075).

destroyer-113:remo-williams: The reviewed local role identifies the same recurring CURE field operative and student/successor of Chiun. Book-specific age, rank, actions, reported origins and scope stay in the observation; none becomes a universal trait. Separate first and independent readings and bounded lead checks are now accepted. destroyer-104:remo-williams: The current novel names Remo at the opening and again identifies his Remo Clear cover in the Abeer protection scene; Book 103 names Remo in the opening and depicts the recurring CURE operative. Same named fictional person and continuing role; the cover name is local to the current book. Lead read current and earlier source contexts; resolves identity only, retaining each book’s role/scope/claims. (witness:00000306:ch02:p0001; witness:00000306:ch27:p0031; witness:00000303:ch02:p0001; witness:00000303:ch10:p0001).

destroyer-105:remo-williams: Both sources identify Remo Williams as the recurring CURE enforcement operative. The current source connects him to Chiun and CURE (ch04:p0050); Book 100 names him and describes the same CURE enforcement role (ch03:p0023). Current-book cover names remain local aliases. Lead inspected the cited current and prior primary contexts; identity alone is consolidated, retaining book-specific scope, roles, variants and conflicting accounts. (witness:00000309:ch02:p0019; witness:00000309:ch04:p0050; witness:00000309:ch45:p0083; witness:00000294:ch02:p0088; witness:00000294:ch03:p0023).

destroyer-114:remo-williams: Same Remo continuing the explicit IV pursuit from the prior novel. Lead inspected the cited current and prior primary contexts; identity alone is consolidated, retaining book-specific scope, roles, variants and conflicting accounts. (witness:00000333:ch02:p0001; witness:00000333:ch01:p0038; witness:00000330:ch02:p0001; witness:00000330:ch02:p0003).

destroyer-106:remo-williams: Book 106 first introduces Remo by given name and later gives “Remo Williams” while explaining that his truck-license cover is Remo Burton. Book 105 explicitly names Remo Williams. The cover name is kept as a source-attested alias, not a separate person. Lead inspected the cited current and prior primary contexts; identity alone is consolidated, retaining book-specific scope, roles, variants and conflicting accounts. (witness:00000312:ch02:p0001; witness:00000312:ch02:p0026; witness:00000309:ch02:p0019).

destroyer-115:remo-williams: Same CURE enforcement agent and Chiun pupil, with the present Hoard mission scoped to this book. Lead inspected the cited current and prior primary contexts; identity alone is consolidated, retaining book-specific scope, roles, variants and conflicting accounts. (witness:00000336:ch02:p0001; witness:00000336:ch02:p0012; witness:00000294:ch02:p0001; witness:00000294:foreword:p0024).

destroyer-125:remo-williams: The current narrative names Remo at the opening and follows his CURE work and Sinanju succession; Book 100 explicitly names Remo Williams in its foreword and continues the same character through the Rite. The contexts establish recurrence while leaving each book's family and succession claims scoped to that work. Lead inspected the cited current and prior primary contexts; identity alone is consolidated, retaining book-specific scope, roles, variants and conflicting accounts. (witness:00000366:ch02:p0001; witness:00000366:ch32:p0044; witness:00000294:foreword:p0024; witness:00000294:ch02:p0001).

destroyer-126:remo-williams: Both works name Remo Williams and depict his continuing CURE work with Chiun. The current book's good-deed succession requirement and Book 100's Rite are work-specific developments; link the recurring character without treating either account as franchise-wide resolution. Lead inspected the cited current and prior primary contexts; identity alone is consolidated, retaining book-specific scope, roles, variants and conflicting accounts. (witness:00000369:ch02:p0001; witness:00000369:ch03:p0133; witness:00000294:foreword:p0024; witness:00000294:ch02:p0001).

destroyer-116:remo-williams: Same named pupil and CURE enforcement agent. Lead inspected the cited current and prior primary contexts; identity alone is consolidated, retaining book-specific scope, roles, variants and conflicting accounts. (witness:00000339:foreword:p0003; witness:00000339:ch02:p0003; witness:00000294:foreword:p0024; witness:00000294:ch02:p0001).

destroyer-107:remo-williams: Book 107 identifies Remo Williams as the CURE enforcement arm and describes the same Sinanju-trained operative (ch02:p0091–0093). Book 80 explicitly identifies police officer Remo Williams as CURE’s selected enforcement arm (ch19:p0090). Name and distinctive role support a proposal for the recurring character. Lead inspected the cited current and prior primary contexts; identity alone is consolidated, retaining book-specific scope, roles, variants and conflicting accounts. (witness:00000315:ch02:p0091; witness:00000315:ch02:p0092; witness:00000315:ch02:p0093; witness:00000234:ch19:p0090).

destroyer-108:remo-williams: Both works identify the character as Remo and describe him as Smith/CURE's operative; the older passage also explicitly names him a Sinanju Master. The cover identity Renton Ward in Book 108 remains a role/alias scoped to that mission. Lead inspected the cited current and prior primary contexts; identity alone is consolidated, retaining book-specific scope, roles, variants and conflicting accounts. (witness:00000318:ch02:p0001; witness:00000318:ch03:p0086; witness:00000315:ch02:p0001; witness:00000315:ch02:p0092).

destroyer-127:remo-williams: The source names Remo and describes his ongoing CURE assignment and Sinanju succession. Book 100 independently identifies the same Remo and his training by Chiun. Link the recurring character while preserving each book’s own succession status. Lead inspected the cited current and prior primary contexts; identity alone is consolidated, retaining book-specific scope, roles, variants and conflicting accounts. (witness:00000372:ch02:p0001; witness:00000372:ch02:p0042; witness:00000372:ch34:p0040; witness:00000294:ch02:p0001; witness:00000294:ch02:p0084).

destroyer-109:remo-williams: The current source names Remo and calls him a former Newark cop resurrected to serve CURE (109 ch02:p0037); Book 108 names Remo directly in its opening (108 ch02:p0001). These are the recurring Remo character, not a namesake. Lead inspected the cited current and prior primary contexts; identity alone is consolidated, retaining book-specific scope, roles, variants and conflicting accounts. (witness:00000321:ch02:p0001; witness:00000321:ch02:p0037; witness:00000318:ch02:p0001).

destroyer-117:remo-williams: The named CURE operative Remo Williams, his role and his apprenticeship under Chiun recur in both stories. The current false Department of Agriculture identity Remo Post is an in-story cover, not a separate person or cross-work alias claim. Lead inspected the cited current and prior primary contexts; identity alone is consolidated, retaining book-specific scope, roles, variants and conflicting accounts. (witness:00000342:ch02:p0001; witness:00000342:ch03:p0001; witness:00000342:ch04:p0006; witness:00000294:foreword:p0024; witness:00000294:ch02:p0001; witness:00000294:ch25:p0074).

destroyer-118:remo-williams: The same named CURE operative and Sinanju-trained pupil is described in both independently read sources. The proposal links the character only; it does not merge source-specific claims or establish every attributed history as series fact. Lead inspected the cited current and prior primary contexts; identity alone is consolidated, retaining book-specific scope, roles, variants and conflicting accounts. (witness:00000345:ch02:p0001; witness:00000345:ch03:p0082; witness:00000345:ch28:p0056; witness:00000339:foreword:p0003; witness:00000339:ch02:p0001; witness:00000339:ch07:p0010).

destroyer-119:remo-williams: Both passages identify the recurring CURE operative Remo; the proposal concerns the same named character, while plot-era continuity remains a separate question. Lead inspected the cited current and prior primary contexts; identity alone is consolidated, retaining book-specific scope, roles, variants and conflicting accounts. (witness:00000348:ch02:p0001; witness:00000348:ch02:p0036; witness:00000294:ch02:p0001).

destroyer-111:remo-williams: Same CUREoperative andSinanjupupil. Lead inspected the cited current and prior primary contexts; identity alone is consolidated, retaining book-specific scope, roles, variants and conflicting accounts. (witness:00000324:ch02:p0001; witness:00000324:ch23:p0008; witness:00000294:ch02:p0001; witness:00000294:ch02:p0084).

destroyer-128:remo-williams: The source names Remo, shows his staged extraction and training under Chiun, and depicts his work at the Capitol. Book100 independently names the same recurring character and his Sinanju training. Link the character while preserving each volume’s separate events. Lead inspected the cited current and prior primary contexts; identity alone is consolidated, retaining book-specific scope, roles, variants and conflicting accounts. (witness:00000375:ch05:p0050; witness:00000375:ch06:p0046; witness:00000375:ch27:p0105; witness:00000294:ch02:p0001; witness:00000294:ch02:p0084).

destroyer-129:remo-williams: Same Sinanju-trained CURE operative; investiture is work-specific. Lead inspected the cited current and prior primary contexts; identity alone is consolidated, retaining book-specific scope, roles, variants and conflicting accounts. (witness:00000378:ch02:p0001; witness:00000378:ch35:p0001; witness:00000375:ch06:p0046).

destroyer-130:remo-williams: Same operative, now invested as Reigning Master; succession status is work-specific. destroyer-134:remo-williams: Named recurring subject identified by its established role and setting; origin and historical claims retain narrator or speaker scope. Lead inspected the cited current and prior primary contexts; identity alone is consolidated, retaining book-specific scope, roles, variants and conflicting accounts. (witness:00000393:ch02:p0001).

destroyer-123:remo-williams: Explicit names, prior-incident callbacks and established roles identify the recurring subject; recovered or reported appearances and conflicting accounts stay book-scoped.
