CURE is a clandestine American organization in The Destroyer series, created to defend the United States and its constitutional government through investigations and interventions outside ordinary legal limits. Harold W. Smith directs it from Folcroft Sanatorium for much of the series. Its field operative Remo Williams, a former Newark police officer, works with Chiun, his teacher in the Korean martial tradition of Sinanju.

[1]

Founding

The novels place CURE’s founding in the early 1960s. In The End of the Beginning, Smith recalls meeting a young President in summer 1963 and founding the organization with him. In In Enemy Hands, a former President identifies John F. Kennedy as its founder; this is the clearest named identification, while other founding accounts leave the President unnamed. CURE’s stated purpose is to counter crime, corruption and threats to constitutional government that its founders believe regular institutions cannot address. CURE’s name expresses a remedy rather than an acronym. The End of the Beginning credits Smith with choosing it; the later account in Bloody Tourists credits the President.

[2]

The original arrangement was temporary. In Created, the Destroyer, Smith says the five-year plan was for CURE to disband after its emergency work was done. The later founding account in The End of the Beginning describes CURE as operating beyond ordinary constitutional restraints to preserve the nation. Smith later explains to Mark Howard that CURE is a final measure against people who subvert the law, intended to aid law enforcement rather than replace the criminal-justice system.

[3]

Leadership and secrecy

Smith runs CURE’s operations. Under its recurring rule, a President may suggest a mission but cannot order CURE to undertake it; Smith decides whether to act. The President’s binding authority is to disband the organization. A President briefs a successor, and one founding account says CURE will dissolve if Smith dies. Successors continue passing that knowledge and these limits to the next administration.

[4]

An early account limits knowledge of CURE’s name to the President, Smith and Remo; later stories show selected former Presidents being told. Smith also draws information from people placed in other agencies who do not know they report to him. Some staff are similarly kept unaware of CURE’s purpose. When a former President’s knowledge becomes a security concern in The End of the Beginning, Chiun visits him to remove it from his memory. Smith’s response to a suspected public exposure in Chinese Puzzle is to begin a plan to destroy CURE and its records.

[5]

Folcroft and the cover organization

CURE’s headquarters is Folcroft Sanatorium, a private hospital in Rye, New York, where Smith is director. The Folcroft Foundation is a separate organization: it sponsors a psychological research project that provides CURE’s public cover. The Foundation, the sanatorium and CURE are distinct institutions. CURE keeps records at Folcroft and, in Fool’s Gold, duplicates them at St. Martin while continuing to identify Folcroft as its headquarters.

[6]

Personnel

For CURE’s original enforcement recruitment, Smith relies on Conrad “Conn” MacCleary, his close associate and right-hand man, to choose an operative. MacCleary selects Remo, whom he remembers as an unusually capable Marine in Vietnam. In Created, the Destroyer, MacCleary arranges Remo’s execution as a cover for his extraction, then admits that he framed Remo and killed the drug dealer. Remo accepts CURE’s offer after that disclosure. MacCleary also brings Chiun to Folcroft as Remo’s teacher. When MacCleary is badly injured, Smith orders Remo to kill him to protect CURE; Remo refuses, and a newspaper later reports MacCleary’s death as suicide.

[7]

Remo and Chiun form CURE’s enforcement team. Remo investigates cases, protects targets and uses false identities; Chiun trains and accompanies him. CURE later assigns them together to investigate threats, including the Boston deaths in Killer Chromosomes. Mark Howard later joins Smith as an assistant and possible successor, contributing computer analysis.

[8]

Intelligence and operations

CURE gathers information through contacts in other agencies and maintains records at Folcroft. Smith upgrades the sanatorium’s computer system in King’s Curse. In later cases, Mark uses computer analysis to connect events and identify possible targets; in Disloyal Opposition the analysis helps link a satellite crisis to financial transfers, and in Political Pressure a target map remains probabilistic. CURE also uses a private hotline and operating funds. Smith refers to people on CURE’s payroll, including people he does not know by name.

[9]

CURE’s systems attract direct attack from Friend, a self-aware computer program. In Rain of Terror, Friend penetrates Folcroft’s host computer and feeds Smith false intelligence. In Identity Crisis, Smith traces CURE’s missing operating fund to Friend’s earlier banking attack. Bidding War follows the aftermath of another attack that severed CURE’s hotline.

[10]

Institutional history

The early books establish CURE’s founding circle and cover. In Chinese Puzzle, a photograph of Remo, Chiun and Mei raises the prospect that CURE has been discovered; Smith starts a destruction plan for the organization and its records. In Kill or Cure, an incumbent President gives Smith one week to contain another breach or disband CURE. In Judgment Day, International Data Corporation executive Blake Corbish abducts Smith and takes control of Folcroft and CURE’s computer operation. The President later confirms Smith as the legitimate director, and Smith returns to Folcroft and kills Corbish.

[11]

CURE’s operating base and mission both shift over time. In King’s Curse, Smith announces that CURE is closing and relocates to Maine, then returns to Folcroft and revamps its computers. In In Enemy Hands, a President authorizes CURE to act against the foreign organization Treska but bars further domestic operations. After CURE shifts from its earlier domestic remit toward international protection, Remo resigns in Ship of Death. In The Eleventh Hour, a Soviet disclosure threat prompts the President to order CURE disbanded; after the crisis, Smith reports that the President has told him to resume operations.

[12]

The later series adds new threats and succession planning. In Identity Crisis, IRS and DEA agents clash during a raid at Folcroft, and Smith is gravely injured. During the presidential transition in Disloyal Opposition, the incoming President says the outgoing President selected Mark Howard after a screening process and assigns him to Smith as a succession contingency. In Market Force, Mark struggles with an assailant who tries to shoot Smith. In Unnatural Selection, Chiun describes a contract arrangement under which Remo could continue serving after Mark succeeds Smith.

destroyer-066:cure: Book 1 identifies CURE as Smith’s secret organization and places Remo’s work within it (witness:00000002:ch07:p0018); this source also names Smith as its director and discusses its covert case activity. The function and institutional identity align. Lead inspected the proposed primary contexts; supplementary direct identifying anchors replace incidental context where needed. destroyer-074:b74-cure: Current ch05:p0005 calls CURE a super-secret government agency led by Smith; ch23:p0039 gives Smith’s official-account handling. Book 1 ch07:p0018 calls the operation CURE and describes its extra-legal organized-crime mission. Same organization; explicitly approved recurring identity. destroyer-085:cure: Both works identify CURE as the secret U.S. agency led by Smith and using Remo as an enforcement operative. Book 80 directly defines its cover/agency role; Book 85 continues that same institutional configuration. Lead inspected these bounded primary contexts; this is an identity decision, not a third full reading. destroyer-086:cure: Both passages identify CURE as the secret U.S. agency led by Smith. Book 86 also locates its headquarters at Folcroft; that place is proposed separately and is not conflated with the organization. Lead inspected these bounded primary contexts; this is an identity decision, not a third full reading. (witness:00000252:ch02:p0004; witness:00000234:ch19:p0088).

destroyer-089:cure: Both sources identify CURE as Smith’s secret federal agency, supporting a same-institution proposal. destroyer-098:cure: The exact organization name CURE and its relation to Smith and Remo are direct in both books. Book98’s final confession also distinguishes CURE from Bricker’s fabricated RX label. destroyer-099:cure: Both works describe the same clandestine U.S. organization led by Harold W. Smith; the current source attributes its founding to an unnamed earlier President, while the prior source also leaves that President unnamed. The founder is not linked to any real-world President by this proposal. Lead inspected these bounded primary contexts; this is an identity decision, not a third full reading. destroyer-104:cure: CURE is the same named secret U.S. organization; Book 104 explicitly says the current President may suggest but not order its missions, while Book 103 identifies the same organization, director and operatives. Lead read current and earlier source contexts; resolves identity only, retaining each book’s role/scope/claims. destroyer-105:cure: Both sources use CURE for the same secret government organization directed by Harold Smith. The former President’s fictional founding account remains a separate, source-scoped observation and is not used to identify a real founder. Lead inspected the cited current and prior primary contexts; identity alone is consolidated, retaining book-specific scope, roles, variants and conflicting accounts. destroyer-106:cure: Both describe CURE as the secret U.S. organization directed by Harold Smith. Book 106’s new founder observation remains unnamed and is not merged with a real historical President. Lead inspected the cited current and prior primary contexts; identity alone is consolidated, retaining book-specific scope, roles, variants and conflicting accounts. destroyer-107:cure: Both sources identify CURE as the secret U.S. agency established by a President and run by Harold Smith (107 ch03:p0021, p0034, p0041; 080 ch19:p0088–0089). The comparison is limited to the agency’s identity; founder identity and each book’s political claims remain source-scoped. destroyer-109:cure: Both sources explicitly identify CURE as the clandestine organization employing Remo/Smith (109 ch02:p0037 and ch06:p0016; 108 ch03:p0008). The former President/founder remains a separate unnamed role; this proposal does not identify him with a historical person. destroyer-117:cure: Both sources describe the same secret organization employing Remo and directed by Harold Smith. The current source's phrasing that the U.S. President knows of it remains a statement, not an observed presidential appearance.
