Time Trial

A report of laser-armed attackers at a Guatemalan archaeological site sends Remo and Chiun into the Peten jungle. There they encounter archaeologist Elizabeth Drake, an injured local boy, and a spacecraft hidden in an ancient temple. During an Olmec ritual, a high priest sacrifices six captured beings he regards as gods. In the present-day frame, Remo and Chiun rescue an Edwards test pilot who later identifies himself as Mike Cooligan, then Smith sends them to investigate archaeologist Richard Diehl’s report of laser weapons in Guatemala. They meet missionary Sebastian Birdsong, are drugged by white flowers, and encounter the injured boy who names himself Po. At the Temple of Magic they free Elizabeth Drake and discover a spacecraft with a time module. During a later earthquake Remo strikes a control switch, carrying the group into Yaxbenhaltun’s past. Captain Kurt Cooligan’s crew had crashed there in 3114 B.C.; Remo, Chiun and Drake arrive about ten years after that event, when the king mistakes them for the return of Kukulcan.

Po is identified as the prophetic voice, and stops the priest Quintanodan from sacrificing Nata-Ah. The king recounts Cooligan’s earlier help to the city. Cooligan’s log confirms the 3114 B.C. crash and describes the crew’s later decision to aid the Maya. Quintanodan, an Olmec, strangles the king and steals six laser weapons before the Olmec attack the city. Remo and Chiun fight the attackers; Drake is taken through the flower fields, then rescued by Remo, who finds Cooligan’s remains. During a later battle, laser fire damages Bocatan until it erupts. Quintanodan dies in the volcano, and an earthquake devastates Yaxbenhaltun. Lizzie sends a vase through the module as a test but remains in the ancient world; after helping villagers, she joins Remo and Chiun through another tremor.

The three return to the present while Po remains with Nata-Ah. Smith dismisses their account when the surviving physical evidence fails. At Folcroft, the opening test pilot identifies himself as Mike Cooligan and says his newborn son Kurt is named after his father, hinting at a circular Cooligan family history. A newspaper epilogue reports Po and Nata-Ah’s tomb and statues resembling the travelers.

Chapter summaries16 chapters · spoilers
  1. Chapter 1

The prologue follows an Olmec visionary high priest as he sacrifices six captured beings believed to be gods, then resolves to take their weapons. The narrator’s later timeline reframes the scene as the Olmec capturing Captain Cooligan’s crew.

  2. Chapter 2

Remo and Chiun rescue the pilot who ejects from a burning F-24 near Edwards Air Force Base. Smith then sends them to the Peten jungle after Richard Diehl reports laser weapons at an archaeological site.

  3. Chapter 3

Remo and Chiun circle the jungle and meet Krishna missionary Sebastian Birdsong, who points them toward the Temple of Magic and tells them about the Lost Tribes. The scented flowers knock them unconscious; they later find Birdsong dead and encounter the injured boy Po.

  4. Chapter 4

Po leads Remo and Chiun toward the temple, where the Olmec attack with spears and laser weapons. Remo and Chiun fight while protecting Po; the boy faints from hunger and injury but later speaks the Old Tongue.

  5. Chapter 5

Remo, Chiun and Po free Elizabeth Drake from the temple rubble. Inside a hidden section they discover a spacecraft and padded time module; during a later earthquake, Remo’s accidental contact with a switch activates the mechanism and displaces the group.

  6. Chapter 6

The group emerges in a thriving city. Po identifies the Old Tongue; after listening to the locals, Lizzie estimates that the city is about ten years after the Maya’s “magic date.”

  7. Chapter 7

The king welcomes the travelers as children of Kukulcan. Po sees Nata-Ah and believes she is his destiny; the attempted sacrifice and Remo’s rescue of Po occur in the following chapter.

  8. Chapter 8

At Bocatan, Po stops Quintanodan from sacrificing Nata-Ah; the priest tries to push Po into the volcano, and Remo catches him. The king later recounts Cooligan’s arrival as Kukulcan and identifies Quintanodan as an Olmec spy who demanded Nata-Ah’s sacrifice.

  9. Chapter 9

Remo and Drake inspect the craft and its control panel. Lizzie interprets the changed panel date as 3104 B.C., ten years after the arrival she associates with Kukulcan; Remo questions her calendar assumptions. The captain’s log begins in the next chapter.

  10. Chapter 10

The captain’s log begins with the Cassandra’s 2032 mission, records its crash and time displacement into 3114 B.C., then recounts how Cooligan’s crew helped Yaxbenhaltun over the following years.

  11. Chapter 11

After Lizzie interrupts Chiun’s court recital, Quintanodan murders the king and steals the six laser weapons. The Olmec assault begins in the following chapter.

  12. Chapter 12

Remo and Chiun fight the invaders while Drake is captured after trying to defend the time ship. Remo pursues the Olmec toward the Forbidden Fields.

  13. Chapter 13

Remo and Drake are drugged and captured, but he removes the flowers and escapes their cell. He finds the skeleton and dog tag of Colonel Cooligan in the caves.

  14. Chapter 14

Remo and Chiun fight the Olmec near Bocatan; laser fire tears the volcano’s surface, and it erupts into the valley and Forbidden Fields. Quintanodan, burned in the eruption, comes to the rim and dies in the volcano after voicing a prophecy. Chiun then senses an earthquake that damages Yaxbenhaltun; the source does not state a cause.

  15. Chapter 15

An earthquake damages Yaxbenhaltun. Remo helps evacuate residents while Po searches for Nata-Ah. Lizzie sends a vase through the module as an experiment but remains in the past; she later rejoins the group after helping villagers. After another tremor, Remo, Chiun and Drake prepare to leave. Po stays to rebuild with Nata-Ah.

  16. Chapter 16

The travelers return to the present with a fragmentary vase message. The laser weapon has disintegrated during their return flight, and Smith dismisses the offered evidence. A Folcroft visitor reveals a Cooligan family connection; the newspaper epilogue reports Po and Nata-Ah’s later tomb.

Presidential clues

Current U.S. President: historical identity unresolved.

Unnamed current U.S. President

Present-case U.S. President who knows about CURE, refers to Remo as a “special person,” and declines to send armed troops into Guatemala.

  • Narration says this President is the sole person besides Smith and Remo who knows CURE exists and refers to Remo as a “special person” (ch02:p0006).
  • Smith says the President cannot risk sending armed troops into Guatemala (ch02:p0146).
  • No personal name, administration, or real-world narrative year is provided.

unresolved

The source provides only the office and a broad present-case description. Do not infer identity from the fictional future date, copyright, or publication metadata.

Unnamed President who directed CURE’s founding

John F. Kennedy

  • Narration says Smith founded CURE at the direction of a man who was then President (ch02:p0004).
  • The narrative supplies no name or date for the order.

strong cross-book inference; unnamed in this book

The earlier President directing CURE’s founding is unnamed here. Book26 explicitly names John Kennedy / John F. Kennedy in that role, supporting continuity as a cross-book inference rather than a directly observed name here.
