Harold W. Smith is the director of CURE, a clandestine American organization in The Destroyer novels. He runs its operations from Folcroft Sanatorium and directs its field team, including Remo Williams, an assassin recruited to act for the agency. Smith is a civilian administrator whose authority depends on secrecy, presidential appointment and the organization’s unusual independence.

[1]

Career and character

Smith grew up in Vermont and New Hampshire and expected a settled New England career in law. One account traces his ambitions from Dartmouth through Harvard Law toward a professorship at Yale. The Second World War redirected him into clandestine Office of Strategic Services work in Europe, where the narrative says he mastered explosives and fear. He received a full scholarship to Dartmouth; accepting it was his first stand against his father, Nathan Smith. At his mother’s funeral, he tried to reconcile but was rebuffed.

[2]

Before directing CURE, Smith had spent a career in U.S. intelligence and was near retirement from the CIA. He objected to the president’s extra-constitutional plan but accepted the directorship out of patriotism and because he believed he could hold himself to account. He arranged for Chiun to train Remo after Remo’s staged execution, building an enforcement arm around the pair.

[3]

Smith’s reserve and habits are part of his working style. He is described as middle-aged in an early account and elderly in a later one; his gray hair, pallor and habitual three-piece suit make him deliberately inconspicuous. He keeps a spare bag ready for urgent travel and avoids attention. A later account describes a neat home and his decades-long practice of collecting the free toothbrush and toothpaste offered at each dental visit. He also has a photographic memory, which he uses to recall details while assessing information. In the office he preserves old routines, reads newspapers alongside CURE’s computer output, and relies on the Folcroft Four without treating their analysis as infallible.

[4]

A former OSS colleague, Nobile, remembers Smith as the instructor who later rescued him from German captivity and remained behind after arranging his escape. Nobile’s recollection supplies an earlier wartime portrait of Smith as an intelligence officer and a man willing to risk himself for a colleague.

[5]

CURE and its director

The novels place CURE’s creation in the early 1960s. A former president identifies John F. Kennedy as the president who started it. In a later account, Smith is summoned to the Oval Office in the summer of 1963. CURE first funnels intelligence to ordinary law-enforcement agencies; after that proves insufficient, Smith decides it needs an enforcement arm. The original arrangement called for CURE to disband after five years, and the stories show it continuing after that term.

[6]

The accounts differ over who named the agency. One says Smith chose “CURE” as a name expressing a wish, not an acronym; another attributes the name to the president. A later narrative also describes an unnamed, assassinated president selecting Smith, while other accounts identify Kennedy. These differences concern the naming and identification of the founder, not whether the stories place the founding in 1963.

[7]

Leadership and methods

Smith controls CURE’s operations and chooses its work. The office of the presidency can suggest missions and ultimately disband the agency, but the novels describe Smith as exercising operational autonomy. His command relies on compartmentalized information: employees may work at Folcroft without knowing CURE’s purpose, while outsiders encounter a psychological research or sanitarium cover.

[8]

Smith’s decisions can expose the moral cost of that system. When CURE operative Conn MacCleary is gravely injured, Smith orders Remo to kill him to protect the organization’s secrecy. Remo refuses; a newspaper later reports MacCleary’s death as suicide, though the novel does not depict Remo killing him.

[9]

Smith builds a personal check on the authority he holds. He worries that near-absolute power could distort his judgment, so he arranges for Miss Purvish, his secretary, to send him regular reports on his attitude and behavior. He routes the reports directly to himself so he can read what she thinks of him.

[10]

Smith’s authority is tested by an incumbent president who threatens to dismantle CURE when Smith refuses a demand. In a later international crisis, another president orders CURE disbanded under pressure to reveal its existence; after the crisis passes, the president orders operations resumed. Smith takes the first order seriously enough to attempt suicide with a poison pill he carries, but Remo revives him.

[11]

Family and private life

Smith’s wife, Maude, knows him as a researcher and does not know the nature of his government work. She recalls that he described his wartime work as “codes” and that she found a personal letter from General Eisenhower praising his service; the letter and her interpretation remain her recollection. Smith privately describes their marriage as thirty years long, normal and happy despite its routine. Much later, a nighttime figure he takes for Maude discusses Remo’s parentage; Smith later says he will call his wife to revisit the conversation.

[12]

Smith’s family life includes both private grief and obligations he accepted during the war. A German colleague named Karl asked him to look after Karl’s daughter; Smith sent her to school and visited, although she grew up mainly with another of her father’s colleagues. This guardianship is separate from Smith’s own unnamed daughter, whom he remembers undergoing withdrawal at a Vermont farm.

[13]

In another conflict, Smith says his father disinherited him for choosing his own path. He tells his adversary that he values the United States above his heritage, dislikes lying and killing, and nonetheless accepts them as part of his government responsibility. One late-night scene shows him holding a Christmas scarf Maude gave him and trying to catch a scent of home. The narration says Folcroft has been his home for more than three decades.

[14]

Later changes

Smith at one point announces that CURE is closing and moves with his wife to Maine, but later returns to Folcroft and restores its computer systems. In subsequent crises he protects the organization through cover explanations and concealed arrangements, including plans to keep a politically sensitive patient at Folcroft.

[15]

Health and succession

In the Second World War, German forces captured and tortured Smith while he served with the OSS; he later told Mark Howard that the injuries still ached when the weather changed. Years afterward, Blake Corbish abducted and tortured him in an attempt to seize CURE. Smith escaped, returned to Folcroft and killed Corbish. When Mark suffered a forced transformation at Judith White’s hands, Smith shared both experiences as a way to help him recover.

[16]

Smith’s health has twice forced emergency changes at Folcroft. He undergoes surgery to remove fluid from around his brain and is eager to leave hospital care. In another episode, a heart attack while shopping leaves him under an oxygen tent; CURE’s emergency plan places Norvell Ransome in charge until Smith recovers, but Ransome tries to take the position permanently. Later, Smith says an earlier illness caused the President to install a new director; Mark’s assistantship was meant to provide a succession option before another emergency. The novels do not depict Mark installed as director.
