A Soviet hypnotist escapes a guarded Siberian village and uses his ability to command people’s attention to build power in America. Vassily Rabinowitz escapes Soviet custody after hypnotizing Sergeant Yuri Gorov into shooting his lieutenant. In New York he builds a crime family through hypnotic control. Remo follows Guenther Largos Diaz’s lead to a Boston bank and kills its six directors; Remo says he still intends to kill Diaz, but the source does not show the outcome. A Russian force under Boris Matesev enters the United States to retrieve Rabinowitz, and Remo kills Matesev. Rabinowitz then manipulates U.S. military personnel by appearing as familiar people, while Anna Chutesov is sent to investigate him. Chiun kills Russian sniper Gusev Balbek. Rabinowitz directs U.S. forces in Sornica while hypnotized Smith hands CURE’s network to the persona of Miss Ashford.

Anna and Remo return to Sornica, where Russian medium-range nuclear missiles have been deployed. In Dulsk, villagers tell of a holy man whose blessing they believe protects the village; visitors there experience one another as loved ones, and the source leaves open whether this accounts for Rabinowitz’s ability. Rabinowitz chooses to risk nuclear war for excitement and uses Smith and an admiral to compromise launch safeguards. Remo turns the President away before he gives the second authorization, stops Chiun’s hypnotized attack without injuring him, and kills Rabinowitz while perceiving him as the Great Wang. The text identifies Rabinowitz as the Great Wang’s appearance at the climax, but leaves the earlier visions open. Smith says he will close down the system. Anna survives and proposes cooperation; Remo stays with Chiun.

Presidential clues

Current U.S. President: historical identity unresolved.

Unnamed U.S. President during the Rabinowitz crisis

The unnamed U.S. President who speaks with Smith about the Russian threat, is portrayed by the narrator as publicly sweet/reasonable but privately cold and executive-minded, and later approaches Rabinowitz’s party before Remo turns him away.

  • The President calls Smith about the Soviet special-force threat and asks CURE to stop it (ch03:p0001–p0027).
  • The narrator contrasts the President’s sweet, reasonable television persona with his colder private executive skills (ch03:p0024); this portrait supplies no name, administration, or unique real-world identity.
  • At the climax the President arrives by motorcade and departs after Remo warns him, taking the second launch password with him (ch16:p0072–p0074).

none

The novel supplies no name, administration, absolute year, or uniquely identifying historical event.
