After a New Jersey DEA raid turns into a deadly ambush, a surge in Raffair stock and a separate cocaine-linked naval incident draw CURE into an investigation. Remo and Chiun trace the company through Boston, New York and several regional offices, while CIA analyst Mark Howard follows an uneasy chain of clues. The inquiry exposes competing criminal interests and a political threat during a presidential transition.

A New Jersey DEA raid on a cocaine shipment becomes an ambush that kills fifteen agents, including Cal Dreeder and Randy Smeed; the attack is followed by a surge in Raffair stock. Remo goes to San Juan, confronts MIR members planning to bomb departing aircraft, and forces Eduardo Sanchez and fourteen others into a car with a timed explosive. The explosion kills them; Corporal Rolando Rodriguez survives because he was away. Separately, a Cuban-registered cruiser collides with the USS Ronald Reagan near Guantanamo Bay, and cocaine is found in the water. CIA analyst Mark Howard links these events and Raffair in his analysis, but the mechanism behind the naval incident remains unexplained.

The unnamed outgoing President asks Smith and the CIA director to investigate Raffair and discusses briefing his successor about CURE. Remo and Chiun follow the Boston and New York connections: Fine is found murdered; Sweet’s associates Botz and DiGrotti die, and Remo kills counterfeiter Paul Petito. Masked attackers bearing a white button assault Remo and Chiun; one is killed under a bus and another dies by his own grenade. Johnny “Books” Fungillo and associates burn Castle Sinanju. Remo believes that his recognition of Fungillo on a flight led the arsonists to their home, while Sweet says the men acted on their own in the house-burning attack.

Sweet explains that Raffair is a public cover routing investor money into infrastructure for organized-crime ventures; he dies after a heart rupture. Angela Scubisci gives Remo and Chiun an unsigned letter and a personal account of her son’s Naples alliance. Smith and Remo treat this as an investigative lead. Remo and Chiun dismantle Raffair’s Chicago office, then survive a ramming attempt and capture its driver. They kill associates at the New Orleans Raffair office. In Miami, Howard is captured by the Gabinetto brothers during a separate attack; Remo and Chiun arrive, and Rodriguez reveals that a woman has directed attacks on Remo. Remo infers the woman’s identity before Rodriguez can complete “She’s your—”; he kills Rodriguez.

At her Westchester County home, the First Lady admits directing MIR and states a plan to become queen of Puerto Rico. She identifies the button as a symbol of female-gender superiority. Remo erases her knowledge of CURE and gives her June Cleaver as a role model; the source does not show whether she pursues or achieves her political plan. A coordinated attack frees prisoners from Ogdenburg Federal Penitentiary. Holy Pauli confirms that Scubisci was the target and dies; Scubisci escapes by helicopter to Canada and then to Naples. In a separate Naples scene, Don Hector Vincenzo explains that Raffair was designed to weaken the Mafia and orders Scubisci killed.

Johnny Fungillo reveals where the other arsonists can be found and Chiun ignites him; Fungillo burns to death. The outgoing President later tells Smith he supplied his wife with CURE operatives’ whereabouts, and Smith plans an overnight memory-erasure procedure. Smith considers suspending CURE operations and retirement, with a poison pill in his vest pocket; Chiun asks him to brief the incoming President. In the final scene, the outgoing President begins telling Mark Howard about CURE with the unnamed President-elect present. The scene ends on the President’s ellipsis before the explanation proceeds.

Selected EPUB transcription is unidentified; matching HTML is duplicate-container evidence, not an independent edition witness.

The source has one XHTML spine document containing all 38 chapter headings. Its final complete sentence ends with a deliberate ellipsis at the start of a CURE briefing; this is an unresolved cliffhanger, not evidence of a missing chapter or truncated transcription.

No original print-edition authentication or original publication date is claimed.

The title-level bibliography supplies this writer attribution. credited_authors is null pending title-page/cover verification; do not infer that marketed creator names drafted this volume.

Story timeframe

Conditional estimate from the retained outgoing/incoming identity hypotheses and their historical succession; the novel supplies no calendar date for this transition.

Presidential clues

Presidential clues

Outgoing U.S. President: retained hypothesis — Possible Bill Clinton allusion (contextual inference only); Incoming U.S. President: retained hypothesis — Possible George W. Bush-era context (unconfirmed inference).

Possible Bill Clinton allusion (contextual inference only)

low; source identity unresolved

Possible George W. Bush-era context (unconfirmed inference)

low; no personal identity established

Unnamed outgoing U.S. President (Destroyer 122)

Possible Bill Clinton allusion (contextual inference only)

  • The President is two-term and refers to the Twenty-second Amendment (ch06:p0047).
  • His wife has listening tours in New York, and a state photograph shows him with Prime Minister Barak (ch06:p0092–0093).
  • He says he is in his last year and describes a new century dawning (ch06:p0111–0112).
  • He schedules an 11 p.m. Friday meeting with the incoming President and says inauguration is tomorrow (ch14:p0003; ch37:p0048).
  • He admits personally supplying his wife with the operatives’ whereabouts and says she pressured him after each failed attack (ch37:p0042–0048).
  • At the final meeting he begins telling Mark Howard about CURE; the line ends on a deliberate ellipsis (ch38:p0003–0011).
  • He arrives in stained casual clothes and a “Global Movieland” shirt; the characterization is satirical rather than identifying by itself (ch06:p0040).
  • He says the President has wanted a third term and attributes his difficulty to his wife (ch25:p0083); no successful third term is shown.
  • His campaign manifesto is titled Between God and Man. How Great I Am (ch06:p0113).

low; source identity unresolved

The source never gives a personal name. A two-term presidency, wife's New York listening tours, Barak photograph, and transition-era clues may invite a Clinton comparison, but the satire does not establish the referent as Bill Clinton.

Unnamed First Lady (Destroyer 122)

Possible Hillary Clinton allusion (contextual inference only)

  • An anonymous woman directs Rodriguez to kill Remo; a later scene directly identifies her as the First Lady (ch02:p0132–0140; ch33:p0012).
  • She states her plan during the Westchester confrontation; this is intent, not an achieved outcome (ch33:p0026).
  • The President says he gave her the operatives’ whereabouts after she pressured him (ch37:p0042–0048).
  • At the end, the President says she has repeatedly pressured him, including over universal health care and the Puerto Rican terrorists (ch37:p0044–0048).
  • She uses an audio Spanish course and is described as a poor student; the text does not establish a personal name (ch33:p0002–0008).

low; source identity unresolved

The text never names her. Her role as the outgoing President's wife and the satirical political details may invite a Hillary Clinton comparison, but the narrative does not establish that identity. Her Puerto Rico plan is stated intent, not a depicted achieved outcome.

Unnamed President-elect (Destroyer 122)

Possible George W. Bush-era context (unconfirmed inference)

  • The outgoing President schedules the transition meeting and says the incoming President should be briefed on CURE (ch06:p0098–0101).
  • The President-elect is present in the Lincoln Bedroom, is to take office at noon the next day, and is still unnamed when the outgoing President begins talking to Mark (ch38:p0003–0011).
  • The named Truman chair is a historical object reference and does not identify the President-elect (ch38:p0004).

low; no personal identity established

The incoming official is not named. Transition-era clues may invite a Bush-era comparison, but the book does not establish the President-elect's identity. The last scene begins the briefing to Mark Howard; Smith is not present and no CURE origins account is narrated.
