The Destroyer#87Mob PsychologyThe DestroyerBook 871992
When International Data Corporation’s new customer engineers disappear on their first Boston assignment, Remo Williams infiltrates the company and discovers its software pilot serves organized crime. As he and Chiun follow a stolen computer disk through Boston’s Mafia hierarchy, a mysterious Terrapin-themed extortion plot begins to converge with the investigation.
Remo pursues bank executive Digory Lippincott in a plane, then investigates disappearing IDC service engineers. Recent hire Wally Boyajian is drowned in a cranberry bog after he cannot restore F&L Importing’s LCN computer. Remo enters IDC as Remo Mercurio and follows the trail to Boston boss Carmine Imbruglia, known as Fuggin or Cadillac. Smith and Chiun direct cosmetic surgery while Remo is unconscious; surgeon Rance Axeworthy extracts the black orb Chiun calls the orb of Shiva, which takes control of Axeworthy and consumes him. Wendy Wilkerson explains that she and Tony Tollini turned a joke into a Boston Mafia software pilot: LANSCII, an IDC accounting system.
Chiun steals its disk; Nicky Kix later takes it from a staged ransom exchange, shoots Vinnie Maggiotto, and escapes, while Chiun kills the wounded Maggiotto. Smith’s tracer exposes LCN accounts and a Terrapins file. Jeter Baird and Devin Western create a comic franchise that becomes a media success; extortionists kill actors playing D’Artagnan and Athos and threaten the creators. Costumed figures intervene as “guardian Terrapins” and kill Nicky, with the familiar voices and “Little Father” address strongly pointing to Remo and Chiun, although the costumes are not explicitly unmasked. Smith alters LANSCII to make Carmine appear to be skimming. Remo presents the false records to Don Fiavorante, who dispatches a courier-disguised soldier against Carmine; Carmine shoots him and assumes he is dead, though the text does not confirm the driver’s fate.
Chiun kills Fiavorante, and he and Smith revive Don Pietro Scubisci, while Carmine forces Tony into a Mafia initiation and orders him to kill Fiavorante. Don Pietro’s guard kills Tony. Smith lures Carmine to a staged cash meeting; Remo kills Bruno Boyardi after extracting Carmine’s location, and Chiun kills Carmine after entering the fortified Manet Building. Smith says his LANSCII time-bomb virus paralyzes the LCN network; Remo reports that they also physically shattered the computers.

Remo locates the Salem Street Social Club and attempts to enter it to recover its computer; alarms sound and he escapes without the machine.
Smith and Chiun discuss surgery for Remo’s persistent forehead lump; Chiun calls it the eye of Shiva and explains the prophecy and danger he associates with it.
Remo insists that the operation remove only the lump, but Chiun renders him unconscious and Smith directs surgeon Rance Axeworthy to proceed without consulting the patient.
Don Fiavorante gives Carmine the Salem Street Social Club, a LANSCII terminal, and the Boston territory subject to weekly rent.
During Remo’s surgery, Axeworthy extracts the black orb Chiun calls the orb of Shiva; it takes control of the surgeon and consumes him before the orb itself disappears.
After Tollini’s technicians refuse another Boston assignment, Chiun arrives claiming to be a Japanese computer genius; Tollini hires him and sends him to Boston.
Disguised as a Japanese computer technician, Chiun enters the Salem Street club, tricks Carmine’s men, removes the hard disk, and leaves with it.
Smith searches IDC’s files, identifies LANSCII as an IDC accounting program, and discovers its Sicilian-crime bookkeeping modules.
Don Fiavorante abducts nephew Tony Tollini, confronts him about the missing disk, and orders him to work with Carmine in Boston.
After almost two weeks unconscious, Remo wakes bandaged and learns his face was operated on while he was under; he later agrees to see it in a mirror.
Carmine spares Tony because of his family connection to Fiavorante but takes his money and watch, puts him to work arranging computers and finances, and draws him deeper into LCN. Carmine mistakes a Federal Express courier for an agent and shoots him; the courier is still moving and bleeding in the depicted aftermath.
Dr. Gerling sees Remo’s healed face; Smith explains that Axeworthy restored the remaining features of Remo’s original face, and Remo accepts it.
Wendy recounts how her joke led Tony to seek a Mafia client, how Fiavorante agreed to a Boston pilot, and how IDC programmers created LANSCII while the board remained unaware.
Smith rejects an immediate assault and explains that the team must first discredit LANSCII in Fiavorante’s eyes; the plan depends on infiltration, confusion, and access to the system.
Carmine, introducing himself as Cadillac, stages a sit-down with property owner Walter Weld Hill and points a Thompson at Hill and his lawyers; they flee and no one is shot.
Carmine has Tony restrained beneath a concrete-breaking nibbler, threatens to crush him while demanding the disk’s location, then releases him after accepting his answers.
Smith uses unique phone numbers in newspaper ads to trace the response to Quincy, Massachusetts, while the exchange is arranged for Saugus.
Nicky Kix gives Chiun a fake ransom envelope and takes the hard disk, shoots Vinnie Maggiotto while escaping, and Chiun later kills the wounded Maggiotto.
Nicky returns the LANSCII disk to Carmine, who hides the recovery from Tony and demonstrates his betting method to Fiavorante.
The restored LANSCII disk connects to Smith’s computer, exposing LCN accounts and a new “Terrapins” file that points toward the next target.
Jeter Baird and Devin Western invent the Terrapins and their success grows into a media franchise; extortionists kill actors playing D’Artagnan and Athos and threaten the creators. Costumed guardian Terrapins kill Nicky and his guards; familiar voices and the Little Father address strongly suggest Remo and Chiun without an explicit unmasking.
Smith alters the LANSCII data to make it appear Carmine skimmed profits, then sends Remo to carry that accusation to Fiavorante.
Remo presents the doctored accounting printouts to Fiavorante, who sends a soldier disguised as a courier to kill Carmine.

Carmine coerces Tony into the Mafia’s blood oath, calls him No Numbers, and tells him that making his bones requires killing Fiavorante.
Tony arrives intending to kill Fiavorante but finds the old Don Pietro Scubisci in his place; Don Pietro rejects Tony’s offer and a guard shoots Tony when the gun’s safety catches.
Smith says Chiun killed Fiavorante and that he and Chiun revived Don Pietro; Smith’s cash offer lures Carmine to an in-person meeting.
After learning Don Pietro has taken over, Carmine suspects an attempt to kill him, locks down the building, and sends Bruno to collect the offered money.
Remo and Chiun meet Bruno at the staged exchange; Bruno gives up Carmine’s location under pressure, and Remo kills him with the nibbler.
Carmine hides in an armored room behind motion detectors while his sports-book terminal begins repeating data and then stops responding; the source does not yet identify the cause in this chapter.

Mob Psychology:
Publisher's description: The Mafia becomes the opponent in a lethal computer-game scheme that draws Remo and Chiun into the action.
Current U.S. President: historical identity unresolved.
John F. Kennedy (strong cross-book founding-role inference; unnamed locally)
strong cross-book inference; no locally observed name
The local early-sixties founder never completed his term. Book26 explicitly names Kennedy in CURE’s recurring founding role, supporting a strong cross-book identification while retaining the lack of a local personal name. This does not establish real existence of the fictional agency.
Unnamed sitting U.S. President in the narrative present; Smith is responsible only to him, and Chiun says the President is protected by the House of Sinanju.
none
No personal name or date-based biography is given. The text separates this sitting President from the President who founded CURE in the early 1960s.
