Sister Mary Margaret Morrow is a nun who runs the Newark orphanage where Remo Williams spends his childhood. She teaches him discipline and hard work long before he becomes CURE’s field operative, and decades later their reunion brings his childhood and the circumstances of his arrival back into focus.

[1]

A demanding teacher

Remo remembers Sister Mary Margaret as a demanding teacher at Saint Theresa’s Orphanage. She insists that good intentions are not enough: a person must do good, work hard, follow discipline and strive for excellence. When she thinks Remo is not trying, she raps his knuckles with a ruler. The discipline remains vivid to him as an adult, though he also remembers her as someone who showed him a way to live.

[2]

Remo’s adult memory

Remo remembers wishing he could thank Sister Mary for raising him. Her lessons also become a measure against which he judges his own life: when he thinks about drinking and killing, he feels guilty about what she might have said, even as he tells himself his victims are enemies of America. He also remembers her warning against wasting pennies that could help the poor.

[3]

The reunion

After a fire at the Newark orphanage, Conn MacCleary arranges for Sister Mary to move to a home for infirm residents in Oklahoma City. By then she is elderly and in declining health. Remo visits her, and she recognizes him by his voice although she can no longer see his face clearly. She tells him he was left as a baby in a basket at Saint Theresa’s. She remembers the tall, lean, rugged man who brought him but does not identify him.

[4]

“Window Boy”

The nuns called the lonely boy Window Boy because he kept waiting to be taken home. Sister Mary says she saw the man who brought Remo again years later, in an Oklahoma City movie theater, but never spoke to him; the encounter does not identify the man. Before leaving, Remo tells her that what she taught him helped more than he can say. She dies that night.

Source notesIdentity and text locators

Contextual source review of the recurring Sister Mary Margaret subject; book-specific observations and uncertainty remain separate.

destroyer-041:sister-mary-margaret: Remo recalls Sister Mary Margaret at his childhood Newark orphanage/park, matching Book30’s named teacher, distinct from Sister Mary Elizabeth. (witness:00000120:ch04:p0075).

destroyer-070:sister-mary-margaret: Same specifically named nun from Remo’s Newark orphanage memories; distinguish Sister Mary Elizabeth. Lead inspected the proposed primary contexts; supplementary direct identifying anchors replace incidental context where needed. (witness:00000204:ch02:p0032; witness:00000204:ch16:p0050; witness:00000087:ch08:p0257).

destroyer-089:sister-mary-margaret: The current named character is the same Sister Mary Margaret remembered in Remo’s orphanage context; the prior sources directly establish her as an orphanage teacher and figure in Remo’s childhood. Book 89’s specific orphanage is not named in its cited observation, so this is a recurring character link, not a claim that every source names the same institution. Lead inspected actual cited primary paragraphs and, where necessary, replaced a metonymic/absent comparison locator with direct prior subject evidence. Bounded identity decision, not another complete reading. (witness:00000261:ch02:p0041; witness:00000087:ch08:p0257; witness:00000204:ch02:p0032).

destroyer-100:sister-mary-margaret: Same named nun who raised Remo at the Newark/StTheresa orphanage; Morrow is directly supplied here as a fuller name, not an inferred expansion. Lead inspected these bounded primary contexts; this is an identity decision, not a third full reading. (witness:00000294:foreword:p0020; witness:00000294:ch18:p0054; witness:00000294:ch18:p0064; witness:00000087:ch08:p0257; witness:00000204:ch02:p0032).

destroyer-125:sister-mary-margaret: Same named nun and teacher from Remo’s Newark orphanage, explicitly remembered in both scenes. Lead inspected the cited current and prior primary contexts; identity alone is consolidated, retaining book-specific scope, roles, variants and conflicting accounts. (witness:00000366:ch02:p0049; witness:00000087:ch08:p0257; witness:00000087:ch08:p0259).
