Freya

Named in 5 guided books, from #73 Line of Succession

Contains spoilers for the series.

Freya is the daughter of Remo Williams, a CURE operative trained by Chiun, and Jilda, a warrior from Lakluun. Her childhood appearances place her in Sinanju and later Canada; the novels follow her from a small child to a teenager caught in a supernatural crisis involving the goddess Kali.

[1]

The child Remo did not know

Jilda brings Freya to Sinanju just as Remo is about to marry Mah-Li. She asks him to look at his child before he marries, and identifies Freya as his daughter. Mah-Li leaves the ceremony. Remo takes Freya in his arms as she calls him “Daddy,” while Chiun objects to a female heir and Jilda refuses to let anyone begin Freya’s Sinanju training without her permission.

[2]

Remo and Chiun later leave Jilda and Freya in Sinanju when they return to America. Jilda will not join Remo while he remains in CURE, and says that he chose the work over her when he left with Chiun. She says Freya misses him and that she may consider Sinanju training when Remo wishes it and Freya wishes it. Her letter reports that Freya has begun practicing breathing and sent a small horseshoe bent into a pretzel shape.

[3]

An illusion and a real abduction

At Sinanju, Jilda loses her memory of the moment Freya disappears. Remo sees pterodactyls carrying a blond child toward the sea and dives after them, but realizes he has grabbed only seaweed: the birds are images created by Jeremiah Purcell, known as the Dutchman. Purcell admits that he put Freya in a steamer trunk and staged her death to provoke Remo. The danger to Freya was real even though the creature Remo pursued was not.

[4]

Remo and Jilda find Freya alive in the House of the Masters. Chiun stays behind to guard mother and daughter, and they remain in Sinanju while Remo leaves again. When he departs, Freya cries that she does not want him to go and asks her mother to stop him.

[5]

Growing up apart

A later epilogue places six-year-old Freya in a Toronto kindergarten. She calls herself Jilda’s daughter and Remo her father, and makes a clay figure of Kali. In another novel, Remo remembers her as a laughing little girl, says she is far from his dangerous life and admits he hardly knows her.

[6]

Years later, Remo believes his deceased mother’s spirit has warned him that danger is growing around Freya. Smith cannot locate her because her surname is unknown. Remo recalls last seeing her at seven and estimates that she is now thirteen.

[7]

Jilda, Kali and the reunion

Remo’s search leads him to Canada, where he and Chiun confront a masked woman calling herself Mistress Kali. Chiun strikes her before Remo recognizes her as Jilda, and she dies in his arms. Remo later finds Freya in a temple room. The story depicts Kali’s spirit acting through his daughter: Freya recognizes him as her father but attacks him, and Chiun says killing the possessing spirit would also kill Freya.

[8]

When the temple floor collapses, Freya is trapped under rubble with a faint heartbeat. Remo clears the stones and revives her; she wakes enough to call him “Daddy.” He carries her out and brings her, with Jilda’s body, to the Sun On Jo reservation.

[9]

Bill accepts Freya as his granddaughter, and three days later she wrestles with her older brother Winner. Remo says he will stay to catch up with his children. He believes Jilda had taken Freya to Canada because she thought it would be safer and that they were unlikely to meet again; the explanation is Remo’s conclusion, not a conversation the novels show him having with Jilda.
