Created, the Destroyer

Newark police officer Remo Williams is framed for murder and sentenced to execution. People acting under secret government authority stage his death and bring him to CURE, a concealed organization directed by Harold W. Smith. Remo is trained by Chiun, an elderly instructor, and sent to investigate a mysterious source of highly effective contract killings called Maxwell. The inquiry draws him into the criminal operation of Norman Felton and into a relationship with Felton’s daughter Cynthia, while Remo struggles with the orders and deceptions that brought him into the organization.

Remo Williams, a Newark police officer, is framed for killing a drug dealer and sentenced to the electric chair. Conn MacCleary, disguised as a priest, gives him a pill as part of a plan to fake his death. The execution is weakened, Remo is pronounced dead, and accomplices revive him outside prison. A Vietnam flashback explains MacCleary’s interest in Remo. MacCleary recruits him into CURE, a covert extralegal operation directed by Harold W. Smith from Folcroft. Remo accepts after MacCleary admits his role in the frame-up. Chiun, an elderly instructor at Folcroft, trains Remo. When MacCleary is badly injured investigating Norman Felton, Smith orders Remo to kill him.

Remo refuses; a newspaper later reports MacCleary’s suicide. Remo follows MacCleary’s lead on Maxwell. The narrative recounts Felton’s rise from a deprived childhood and his first murder of Vito Morroco to a paid-killing and body-disposal business connected to Carmine Viaselli’s criminal organization. Remo follows Felton’s daughter Cynthia to Briarcliff, manipulates her trust, and is abducted by Felton’s men; he kills his captors. He and Cynthia have sex after a confrontation in which she later says he took advantage of her. At Felton’s residence Remo kills Marvin Moesher. He then draws Felton to the junkyard by asking about a 1934 Maxwell. Felton and Jimmy put Remo in a steel crusher, but Remo escapes, defeats Felton, and starts the crusher with both men inside, killing them.

The machine is a Maxwell Steel Reducer made by Maxwell Industries, resolving Maxwell as a machine rather than a person. Remo reports the machine/operator discovery to Smith, then pretends to be Felton’s employee conveying a fabricated request to lure Viaselli to the yard; Cynthia does not know what Remo has done.

Created, The Destroyer:

Publisher's description: The publisher presents the series premise: framed former officer Remo is recruited into CURE and trained by Chiun to target criminals beyond ordinary law enforcement.

Presidential clues

No current or succession assessment is available; other retained presidential references remain in context.

CURE’s uncertain authorization

An incumbent U.S. President at the time of the CURE setup, not an on-page character in the scene.

  • Smith says he does not know whether the President authorized the operation.
  • Smith says he has one contact whom MacCleary is not permitted to know; he is not certain about presidential authorization.
  • The flashback is five years before the chapter's current discussion, with no calendar year.

none

The text explicitly withholds knowledge of authorization and provides no date, name, or identifying biographical clue.

The unidentified caller

Unidentified superior who orders Smith to eliminate Maxwell; the passage does not supply an office title or name.

  • A familiar voice calls on the direct scrambler line and issues orders about witnesses and a Senate inquiry.
  • Smith thinks of the caller as upstairs.
  • Book 2 separately describes a presidential scrambler link to CURE, but this does not prove the Book 1 caller is a president.

none for named identity; presidential role remains a hypothesis

The scene never names the caller or labels him President. It cannot be merged with the five-years-earlier incumbent merely because both concern CURE.
