The Sun On Jo Reservation is a desert home in Arizona associated with the Sun On Jo community and its hereditary protector, Sunny Joe Roam. The novels place it in the Sonoran Desert near Yuma and describe the open, arid land around the settlement. It is a place in the story, distinct from the community and its name.
Remo and Sunny Joe
Remo’s family connection brings him to the reservation: Bidding War opens with him living with Sunny Joe, and later narration identifies the exiled Korean Master Kojong as Remo’s ancestor. Sunny Joe is presented as Remo’s father and as its protector.
A place to begin again
The reservation also becomes a refuge and a possible new home. Winston Smith says he wants to do something different from fighting; Sunny Joe invites him to settle there, and Winston accepts. The story presents the reservation as a place where a newcomer can choose a quieter life.
