Kojong the Lost is a Sinanju ancestor whose departure from Korea connects the martial House with the family of Remo Williams in The Destroyer. The early account comes through a village legend told by Mah-Li; later novels identify Bill “Sunny Joe” Roam and Remo as his descendants. He is the twin brother of Kojing, who remains in Sinanju when Kojong leaves.

[1]

The twin legend

Mah-Li tells Remo that the aged Master Nonga’s younger wife gives birth to identical twin sons. Nonga names one Kojing, but the mother secretly raises the other as Kojong. She fears that the Master will kill one child to enforce the rule that only the firstborn can be trained in Sinanju. In her account, the hidden twin learns through his brother, creating two practitioners where the succession rules permit only one.

[2]

When the brothers’ secret is revealed, Kojong chooses to leave Sinanju and Korea. He promises not to pass on knowledge of the Sun Source, but to preserve the spirit of the ancestral Masters among his descendants. He tells the village that if the line ever lacks a successor, it should seek the sons of Kojong and choose a worthy heir. Remo initially jokes that he might be one of those descendants; the early legend itself does not confirm that guess.

[3]

The Sun On Jo lineage

In Last Rites, Remo meets Kojong in a dream during the Rite of Attainment. Kojong describes Remo as a brother of his blood. Later, in the cave of the Sun On Jo chiefs, Chiun identifies the preserved ancestor as Kojong the Lost and tells Remo that Sunny Joe is a descendant of the man whom the tribe calls Ko Jong Oh. Chiun separately identifies Remo as Kojong’s descendant. The narration in Bidding War explicitly identifies Kojong as the exiled Korean who founded the tribe and as Remo’s Sinanju ancestor.

[4]

Chiun asks the Sun On Jo family to bring Kojong’s body to Sinanju for burial among the bones of his father and twin. The later telling uses the father-name Nonja, while Mah-Li’s earlier version uses Nonga. The stories retain the twin distinction even where their details vary. In Angry White Mailmen, the narration again describes Remo as a direct descendant of Master Kojong, explaining the Korean ancestry of the American pupil.

[5]

Place in the succession

In Mah-Li’s telling, Kojong’s promised descendants offer a way to preserve the Sinanju line when it lacks a suitable heir. Chiun’s later genealogy gives that possibility a personal meaning for Remo and Sunny Joe. Target of Opportunity describes Remo as a spiritual rather than blood heir to Sinanju; Last Rites gives Chiun’s account of blood descent from Kojong. Those descriptions differ, and the accounts do not explain the change.
