Mah-Li is a woman of Sinanju who becomes Remo Williams’s beloved and intended bride. Remo is an American operative trained by Chiun, the village’s Master of Sinanju. The villagers’ custom confines Mah-Li to darkness because they regard her as ugly, leaving her socially isolated.

[1]

Life in Sinanju

Mah-Li tells Remo that her parents died before she could remember them and that she has no family. Men reject her, and she says villagers call her “the beast.” When Remo fears Chiun may be dying, she speaks gently with him about his grief and which traditions deserve to endure. Their conversations give Remo a rare sense of being understood.

[2]

The “beast” label is not a description of Mah-Li’s appearance: when Remo finally lifts her veil, he finds her beautiful. Her gentle conversation and her face make clear how village custom has hidden her from others and distorted how they see her.

[3]

The lost Master’s legend

Mah-Li recounts the village legend of Kojong, one of twin sons born to Master Nonga. Because there could be only one Master, Kojong left Sinanju and Korea, promising not to pass on its fighting knowledge but to preserve the ancestors’ spirit. In the story, he prophesies that if a future Master has no sons, his descendants might carry the tradition forward. This is a legend Mah-Li tells Remo, not confirmed family history.

[4]

Courtship and marriage

Remo falls in love with Mah-Li and asks Chiun to approve their marriage. He says she is kind and someone he can talk to. Chiun objects that Mah-Li has no family to provide the customary payment from the bride’s father to the groom’s father, but later agrees. Remo begins building a separate house for Mah-Li; after they discuss their future, they decide she will move in with Remo and Chiun after the wedding.

[5]

The interrupted wedding

During the ceremony, a child pushes through the crowd calling Remo “Daddy.” Chiun invalidates the marriage because Remo is not a virgin. Remo then recognizes Jilda, who says the child is theirs. Mah-Li leaves before the child is named. Chiun afterward tells the villagers that no wedding will take place that day; Jilda names Freya and Chiun objects to a female heir. Remo later introduces himself to Freya as her father.

[6]

Death and aftermath

Remo and Chiun find Mah-Li dead in her sleeping room, still dressed for the ceremony. Chiun finds a bruise at her throat and recognizes a fatal blow. Remo later says the Dutchman used mental deception to take Mah-Li’s place on the wedding day after she was already dead; Remo tracks him down and leaves him mentally shattered. Remo continues to grieve Mah-Li, connecting her death with the life he nearly had and the daughter he has only just discovered.
