Jeremiah Purcell, known as the Dutchman, is a recurring assassin in The Destroyer. Trained by the renegade Sinanju practitioner Nuihc, he combines martial skill with psychic powers that manipulate perception. He threatens Remo Williams, the operative of the covert organization CURE, and Remo’s teacher Chiun. His relationship with Nuihc turns their conflict into a continuing struggle over the Sinanju succession.
Early life
As a boy, Jeremiah Purcell’s uncontrolled imagination appears to make his parents catch fire. Nuihc takes him from the train to a state home and trains him in Sinanju. The narration describes Purcell’s power as something he did not understand or deliberately use.
Nuihc’s most dangerous pupil
Purcell’s unusual mind gives him psychic powers that can control a target’s attention and create illusions. Nuihc teaches him Sinanju and hopes to use both his martial skill and his mental abilities in a campaign of conquest. Purcell calls Nuihc “father,” but the story says Nuihc never called him son; the title reflects a coercive teacher-pupil bond rather than proven parentage.
A rival in Sinanju
Purcell becomes the only white man besides Remo to receive the secrets of Sinanju, and the narration says he learned them well. It also identifies subtle hypnotic powers that made him a threat beyond his martial skill; the shattering of his mind had suppressed those powers.
Murders and Devil’s Mountain
While living in isolation on Saint Martin, Purcell becomes known as the Dutchman. His men bring displaced men to the shipyard; the novel depicts Purcell killing several and loading bodies into a refrigerated container that is to be burned. Stories about Devil’s Mountain mix rumor with witnessed events and do not establish supernatural powers.
A psychic campaign
The Dutchman later targets presidential candidates and uses a vivid psychic illusion against Remo. He taunts Chiun as a father figure and invokes Nuihc as his own father, turning the old succession conflict into a personal trap. Remo defeats him but does not kill him; the Dutchman is taken to Folcroft, where he is believed to be catatonic.
During the campaign against presidential candidates, Purcell also uses the identities Tulip and Adonis and masked impersonators. He abducts Freya and stages her apparent death through illusion, but Remo finds her alive. Chiun later concludes that Purcell killed Mah-Li, though the death is not shown. Remo eventually captures Purcell alive.
Escape and influence over Mark
Purcell escapes Folcroft after influencing Mark Howard, whose confusion and exhaustion make him more susceptible. Smith later speculates that Mark’s own abilities increased that susceptibility and says Purcell left psychic traces; he reports Mark was distressed by Purcell’s relationship with Nuihc. Purcell later goes at large and silent before returning to Sinanju.
Return to Sinanju
When Purcell returns, he claims to be Nuihc and seeks to take over the village in his teacher’s name. Remo distinguishes Purcell’s belief that he was channeling Nuihc from the real Nuihc’s ambition to rule Sinanju. Purcell’s body is later described as lifeless. A later epilogue shows Nuihc alive on Saint Martin, training and coercing a boy; the text does not identify Purcell’s body as Nuihc.
Book appearances
- #46Next of Kin
The island castle’s “Dutchman,” later identified as Jeremiah Purcell. Trained by Nuihc, he uses destructive mental abilities, kills men at the shipyard and seeks revenge on Chiun. Remo injures him in combat, but Jeremiah survives the castle explosion and escapes wounded by boat; the ending leaves his survival after the shark encounter unresolved.
- #55Master's Challenge
American called the Dutchman, trained by Nuihc and endowed with volatile mental powers; he sexually assaults and kills an unnamed Russian woman, strikes Chiun, who appears dead but survives, fights Remo, and escapes through a tunnel to the sea.
- #73Line of Succession
Sinanju-trained antagonist identified as Jeremiah Purcell; he uses Tulip, Adonis and a ninja-master appearance, directs attacks on both presidential candidates and is captured alive by Remo. His later condition is unresolved.
- #77Coin of the Realm
Former adversary held at Folcroft in a blank mental state after his last encounter with Remo and Chiun.
- #97Identity Crisis
Folcroft patient known as the Dutchman, formerly trained in Sinanju and capable of hypnotic or illusory effects; his mind appears to be recovering. The later cell occupant appearing as Beasley is revealed to be Purcell; this does not make the actual earlier Beasley patient an impostor.
- #123Disloyal Opposition
Sedated Dutchman at Folcroft whose strength and hand movement begin to return; Chiun identifies him as Sinanju and says tradition forbids harming another villager.
- #127Market Force
CURE special-wing patient held in a medicated coma who escapes after Mark changes his medication; Remo suspects Purcell exerted mental influence on Mark, and Smith later concludes Mark was probably not in control. The book does not independently demonstrate the mechanism.
- #128The End of the Beginning
Nuihc’s unnamed young pupil, trained in a mind-based technique; the Epilogue calls him “the Dutchman,” an island nickname. He is not the unnamed boy in the narrative Prologue.
- #129Father to Son
Psychically gifted man trained by Nuihc; his projections disguise his attack and later make him appear as Nuihc.
