Shiva, identified in The Destroyer with the Hindu god of destruction, is the supernatural identity Chiun associates with his pupil Remo Williams. Sinanju’s dead-night-tiger prophecy describes a Master bringing a once-dead pupil to fullness. Chiun sees Remo as its fulfillment, while Remo repeatedly questions what that would mean for his own identity. Several novels depict voices or manifestations through Remo’s body, alongside dreams and disputed interpretations.
The dead-night-tiger prophecy
Remo’s staged execution and subsequent training give Chiun a framework for interpreting the prophecy. In The End of the Beginning, Chiun recites a prediction attributed to the Great Wang: a Master will find a pale, dead-eyed pupil in the West and make him a night tiger and the Destroyer. The same novel recalls Chiun seeking the foretold pupil before doubting that the newly recruited Remo could be that man.
In Berserker, Chiun’s written account treats Remo as the white night tiger and incarnation of Shiva. The legend also warns of danger from other night tigers. Chiun applies that warning to the adversaries in Killer Chromosomes, and the later account in Deadly Genes repeats his belief while acknowledging Remo’s longstanding skepticism.
Declarations and manifestations
Early in Miami Massacre, Remo remembers words about being created Shiva but laughs off the suggestion that he is the god. In Sweet Dreams, he uses the identity during an inner dialogue while escaping a burning house. Those declarations do not by themselves establish a change of identity; the surrounding scenes differ from the later episodes that depict a separate voice or force using his body.
In Shooting Schedule, Remo is believed dead after a parachute disaster. The narrative later depicts Shiva speaking through his body and yielding him back to Chiun; Remo wakes at Folcroft after a week. Arabian Nightmare again depicts a Shiva entity animating him, in a conflict involving Kimberly Baynes and the identity of Kali. Dance of Death, by contrast, has Chiun fear that Shiva has replaced Remo and then conclude that it has not in that encounter.
Other appearances remain disputed within the story. Tibetan characters in High Priestess interpret Remo’s actions as divine aid and call him Gonpo Jigme. Chiun says Shiva rode his pupil, but Remo rejects the explanation. During the gyonshi confrontation in The Ultimate Death, Remo invokes Shiva and the dead night tiger. The words frighten the Leader, but the scene does not establish whether they signal a literal transformation.
Succession and Remo’s identity
The Father to Son prophecy speaks of a dead figure calling the Armies of Death and waging a War of Sinanju, with different interpretations as the events unfold. During his confrontation with Jeremiah Purcell, Remo declares the Shiva identity and the narration says he owns the words for the first time. The experience accompanies his Time of Succession.
In Waste Not, Want Not, Remo remembers a brief sense of completeness during the ordeal. He explains that he remains Remo Williams and cannot express exactly what he saw. The narration connects his earlier resistance to a fear that a divine presence might eventually consume his individuality. His new office as Reigning Master does not make him speak as a permanently separate Shiva personality.
Book appearances
- #2Death Check
Remo recalls a saying taught by Chiun that names Shiva; this is a remembered textual reference, not independent proof of a supernatural identity.
- #4Mafia Fix
Hindu deity referenced as the Destroyer and misinterpreted by Scubisci’s daughter as the force confronting Verillio
A fictional identity for Remo is discussed; do not treat the deity and Remo as an independently verified metaphysical fact.
- #8Summit Chase
Sinanju lore/reference invoked in Remo’s relationship to the Destroyer role.
- #24King's Curse
Hindu deity invoked by Chiun’s belief that Remo is a reincarnation of the Destroyer.
- #25Sweet Dreams
Religious figure invoked in Remo’s self-identification as “created Shiva, the Destroyer.”
- #29The Final Death
Hindu deity allusion and identity Chiun believes Remo embodies; Remo’s declaration does not create a separate on-page deity character.
- #36Power Play
Hindu deity invoked as a metaphor in Remo’s challenge to the Wa assassin.
- #37Bottom Line
Indian destruction deity invoked in Chiun’s belief about Remo, which Remo explicitly rejects.
- #38Bay City Blast
Deity invoked in Remo’s self-description during the confrontation with Tolan; source statement remains a declaration.
- #45Spoils of War
Hindu deity invoked in the Sinanju legend and Remo’s dream/“true incarnation”; source-specific spiritual framing, not a separate on-page character.
- #49Skin Deep
Hindu destroyer invoked in Chiun’s private call that awakens Remo from hypnosis; Chiun also describes Remo through a Sinanju prophecy.
- #52Fool's Gold
Religious deity referenced in Smith’s account of Chiun’s belief about Remo.
- #55Master's Challenge
Religious/mythic name invoked by the Sinanju prophecy and H’si T’ang’s description of Remo; asserted by characters/narrative, not an external historical identity.
- #59The Arms of Kali
Deity named in Chiun’s Sinanju prophecy about Remo and later invoked by the supernatural voice in the confrontation; the novel’s claims remain attributed to its narrative.
- #71Return Engagement
The source invokes Shiva and the white night tiger in Chiun’s interpretation of Remo’s temporary possession.
- #79Shooting Schedule
The deity named Shiva, who is represented in the story by a speaker claiming to be “created Shiva” and speaking through Remo’s apparently dead body. This records the narrative’s depicted identification, not a claim that the supernatural mechanism is independently established or that Shiva is Remo’s ordinary identity.
- #80Death Sentence
Hindu deity invoked in Sinanju prophecy and Chiun’s fear of a past episode when Remo’s personality was supplanted; the novel does not establish that Shiva is actually present in this book.
- #87Mob Psychology
Deity of destruction invoked in the Sinanju avatar prophecy and Chiun’s explanation of the orb. Chiun’s predicted future incarnation and Smith’s psychological interpretation remain attributed accounts.
- #94Feeding Frenzy
Divine Destroyer identity invoked by Remo during the venom episode; narration calls his voice Shiva’s, then Remo returns to his ordinary state. Preserve the episode’s supernatural narrative scope.
