The Destroyer#108Bamboo DragonThe DestroyerBook 1081997
CURE sends Remo undercover as a herpetologist on an expedition into the Malaysian jungle to investigate reports of a legendary creature. As the group follows its guide through remote forest, Remo suspects that someone else has a hidden objective and that the expedition’s danger extends beyond the wilderness.
A veteran prospector, Terrence Hopper, returns from a Malaysian expedition delirious and later dies, reporting that a creature destroyed his party. CURE director Harold W. Smith sends Remo to join a Museum of Natural History expedition seeking the reported Nagaq under a fabricated herpetologist identity; Smith suspects uranium may also be involved. After Remo survives an attack arranged by Kuala Lumpur enforcer Sing Hop Ma, the expedition travels to Tasek Bera with paleobotanist Audrey Moreland, mercenary Pike Chalmers, Malaysian deputy Sibu Sandakan, and guide Kuching Kangar. Remo and his group face an attack by a Chinese-led guerrilla force seeking information from an unidentified contact. During the raid, Audrey disappears in the surrounding quicksand and Remo presumes her dead; he pursues and kills the raiders’ leader after learning the information was meant for Beijing.
The surviving team continues and Kangar reveals himself as a member of a hidden tribe, bringing them to its jade-built City. Audrey reappears, admits that she is the Chinese contact and says she was paid to help locate uranium using a silent Geiger-counter watch. Remo enters the City and finds the glowing fountain causes the watch to spike; he infers that uranium in the water caused the tribe’s deformities. During a ceremony for the tribe’s Nagaq, Remo rescues the captives as a living dinosaur enters the temple. Stockwell identifies it as a ceratosaurus. Chalmers flees, later attempts to attack Nagaq with a spear, and is then killed by the dinosaur.
Nagaq also kills Chiun’s elephant and escapes wounded from the City. Audrey is fatally speared by a tribesman; Remo kills the attacker and ends Audrey’s pain. Remo and Chiun leave with Stockwell and Sandakan. In New York, Smith says Malaysia has claimed the uranium and plans to contain Stockwell’s account; Remo reports that Malaysian commandos destroyed the tribe and the dinosaur escaped, an operation not shown directly. The dinosaur’s later fate and whether more exist remain unknown.

During a night camp, an unidentified creature attacks Hopper’s party, kills geologist Eakins and troubleshooter Sparks, and chases Hopper into the forest; Hopper escapes, but its nature is not established in this chapter.
Sing Hop Ma arranges for attackers to kill Remo during a market diversion; Remo kills the attackers while protecting nearby tourists, and identifies no sponsor beyond Sing Hop Ma’s failed operation.
Smith explains CURE, the earlier Hopper expedition, and reported Nagaq sightings, then assigns Remo under the Renton Ward cover to Stockwell’s museum expedition; uranium remains a suspected objective.
Remo meets Stockwell, Audrey Moreland, Pike Chalmers and Sibu Sandakan; the group plans a flight to Temerloh, riverboat to Dampar, and canoe/foot travel toward Tasek Bera.
Germuk Sayur equips Sandakan with a transmitter and discusses government responses if uranium or a living creature is found; Chalmers privately imagines eliminating the party for fame and profit, but takes no such action here.
After Chalmers grabs and threatens Audrey at a bar, Remo knocks him unconscious; Audrey asks Remo to escort her and expresses attraction.
The Babi Kali carries the expedition and supplies south toward Dampar; Audrey continues to flirt with Remo during the journey. The guide is identified in the following chapter.
The expedition departs Dampar by canoe and then on foot. Afterward, an unnamed elderly Korean arrives by speedboat and follows their route; neither the party nor the local residents identify him as Chiun in this chapter. Remo separately senses that someone may be following them.
Remo throws a venomous viper away from Audrey, then the pair have consensual sex beside a stream and return separately; the narrator says Remo does not know someone follows them.
Kangar recounts his grandfather’s alleged death by Nagaq; a parallel viewpoint identifies Chiun and then Lai Man Yau, whose force is following Beijing’s orders and expects a contact within the expedition.
An armed group attacks the sleeping expedition. Remo and Chalmers fight back; Audrey disappears in the surrounding quicksand and is presumed dead by Remo and the team, while Remo pursues the attackers.
Remo tracks Lai Man Yau’s survivors, kills five soldiers after disarming them, and interrogates their leader, who says the information from a foreign comrade was to go to Beijing; the leader is then killed.
The remaining team votes to continue after Stockwell doubles Chalmers’s fee; Remo again senses a follower, meets Chiun, and tells him about the guerrillas and uranium suspicion.
Kangar turns on the expedition when a band of visibly deformed tribespeople appears, disarms Chalmers, seizes Sandakan’s transmitter and says Stockwell was chosen for Nagaq; Remo shadows them.
The group reaches the hidden City. Kangar’s viewpoint describes his tribe’s Nagaq tradition and sacrifices; Audrey reappears alive, admits her deal with Chinese buyers, and carries a Geiger-counter watch; Remo incapacitates her and takes it.
Remo reads a radiation spike near the glowing fountain as evidence of uranium and speculates it caused the tribe’s deformities; Chiun befriends and rides an elephant; the captives are bound in a temple ceremony and Audrey is recaptured.
Stockwell identifies the arriving creature as a ceratosaurus. Chalmers throws a tribesman to it and flees; Remo kills the chief and attackers and leads Stockwell, Sandakan and Audrey away.
Chalmers tries to attack Nagaq with a spear, but the dinosaur catches and swallows him. Chiun rides the elephant toward the temple while Remo and the others fight through the City; they do not leave the City until the following chapter.
Nagaq kills Chiun’s elephant and escapes injured. A tribesman fatally spears Audrey; Remo kills her attacker and ends her pain. Chiun kills several attackers with arrows, Remo activates Sandakan’s transmitter, and helicopters are later heard.
Back at Folcroft, Smith says Malaysia has claimed the uranium; he plans to keep Stockwell at Folcroft while Georgetown says he is recuperating. Remo says Malaysian commandos wiped out the tribe and let the dinosaur escape; no new CURE mission is authorized.
