Summit Chase

CURE sends Remo Williams to stop a conspiracy involving Scambia’s vice president and Baron Isaac Nemeroff, an international broker for organized crime. In Algeria, Remo meets a British agent and a network of criminals preparing to turn Scambia into a refuge. A head wound leaves Remo uncertain of his identity, while Chiun’s apparent weariness makes Remo worry about his teacher. Both men are drawn into Nemeroff’s summit and a race to protect Scambia’s president and treasury.

Vice President Asiphar expects to succeed President Dashiti within a week. Remo visits imprisoned lawyer Bernard Devlin disguised as Father Tuck; Devlin describes a plan to assassinate Scambia’s president and make the island a criminal refuge, but does not know the leader. Smith assigns Remo after three CIA agents who questioned Devlin are killed, identifying Asiphar as a guest of Baron Isaac Nemeroff. Two armed pursuers follow Remo to his suite; Chiun kills one and Remo the other. Chiun reveals he considered retirement but does not think Remo ready to inherit Sinanju. On a flight to Algeria, Remo recognizes contract killer P. J. Kenny, kills him after Kenny assaults a stewardess, and takes Kenny’s passport.

In Algiers, Remo meets Margaret “Maggie” Waters, secretly a British agent, and is shot by Nemeroff’s servant Namu. A ricochet wounds Remo’s temple, leaving him with amnesia. At Nemeroff’s castle, the baron offers him ten percent of the Scambia venture and asks him to kill Remo Williams and Chiun. Remo defeats Namu, who admits targeting Maggie, then brings Chiun to the castle as a supposed prisoner. Maggie follows and is captured. O’Brien, a prison guard who recognizes Remo, is killed; Chiun’s accurate blow restores Remo’s memory. They free Maggie and kill her jailer before entering the summit. Nemeroff reveals fees for a criminal sanctuary and a plan to steal Scambia’s $100 million gold reserve during Dashiti’s assassination.

Remo discloses his identity; he and Chiun kill the gathered crime leaders, while Nemeroff escapes. Pursuing him to Scambia, Chiun prevents Dashiti’s assassination, killing Asiphar and two hired gunmen. Remo stops Nemeroff’s treasury crew, but Nemeroff escapes and shoots Maggie dead. Chiun’s long-range shot brings down the helicopter in an explosion; the text implies Nemeroff dies but does not explicitly confirm his body or resolve the gold’s final disposition.
