The Destroyer#7Union BustThe DestroyerBook 71973
A union crew’s secret construction job in Chicago draws federal attention, while CURE sends Remo Jones to investigate a planned alliance among the country’s major transportation unions. Remo enters the Drivers’ convention under cover as an organizer and is pulled into a contest with the charismatic new union president Gene Jethro and a hidden adviser named Nuihc. As Remo’s attempts to avert a lethal showdown fail, he must confront both the union plot and the limits of his training with Chiun.
Telephone installer and union steward Jimmy McQuade is recruited by an unnamed International Communications Workers vice-president to supervise an overtime crew building a secret facility on Nuihc Street outside Chicago. Two FBI agents investigating the construction are killed; the President hears the labor secretary’s and FBI director’s reports, privately contacts Smith, and asks CURE to act. Remo is first sent to kill James Thurgood, a Tucson financier of a heroin network. After eating a hamburger with monosodium glutamate, Remo suffers a severe reaction; Dr. Gerald Braithwait diagnoses it at a hidden coal-barge clinic, learns CURE’s secret, and is killed by Remo. Under the alias Remo Jones, Remo enters the International Brotherhood of Drivers convention through Abe “Crowbar” Bludner.
Gene Jethro wins the presidency with a concealed plan to combine four transportation unions. The labor secretary warns that a joint transportation strike could paralyze the nation’s economy. Smith orders the extreme plan: kill the four union leaders. Remo rejects that course, accepts Jethro’s offer to become recording secretary, and instead tries to enter the guarded Nuihc Street building. Jethro’s girlfriend and secretary, Chris, identifies the other union chiefs and supplies enough information for Remo to disperse them by bringing their wives to the Chicago hotel. A layered 27-man ambush nearly kills Remo; the Scarlet Ribbon turns the shooters’ lines of fire against one another, but Remo is wounded and reports that his alternative failed.
He prepares to drop a convention-hall beam on the leaders, then finds the hall empty after the meeting is moved to the new building and abandons the plan. Chiun reveals that Nuihc is his nephew, a Sinanju-trained deserter who built defenses against Sinanju methods. In the building, Remo survives Jethro’s poison-mist trap and defeats him, then attacks Nuihc while feigning acceptance of his offer of fame, power, and family. Nuihc wounds Remo badly, but Chiun intervenes, orders Nuihc to leave, and saves Remo. Chiun says he cannot kill another member of his village; Nuihc escapes. Remo returns to the convention, falsely announces Jethro’s resignation, engineers Bludner’s election as president, and arranges for Chris to give the FBI evidence tying the three other union chiefs to misuse of union funds. The merger is stopped, and Remo expects to disappear again under a new face.

Chicago telephone installer and union steward Jimmy McQuade is recruited by an unnamed International Communications Workers vice-president to assemble a union crew and build a secret project at Nuihc Street. The crew’s overtime and envelopes raise suspicion; two FBI agents investigate, and the unnamed President privately learns of a proposed transportation superunion and contacts CURE.
Remo travels to Tucson to kill financier James Thurgood, whose bank has funded a major heroin pipeline through intermediaries. He leaves evidence connecting Thurgood to heroin at the scene and then suffers a glutamate-induced episode after eating a hamburger.
Gene Jethro, Local 873 president in Nashville, faces possible jail over illicit union money and courts the support of regional union power brokers at the International Brotherhood of Drivers convention. Sigmund Negronski, Anthony McCulloch, Rocco Pigarello, Timmy Ryan, Joe Wolcyz, and Prat Connor appear in the political and violent maneuvering; Jethro’s sudden influence and secret project unsettle the delegates.
After the hamburger reaction, Remo awakens in a hidden hospital room on a coal barge. Folcroft physician Dr. Gerald Braithwait identifies monosodium glutamate as the cause of Remo’s episode and learns the truth about CURE and Remo’s apparent death. Smith concludes Braithwait cannot be allowed to leave with this knowledge; Braithwait threatens Smith, and Remo kills him.
Under the name Remo Jones, Remo is installed as a New York business agent and convention delegate through Abe “Crowbar” Bludner. Bludner’s unusual mix of corruption and loyalty contrasts with the impending merger plot. Remo sees that Bludner does not know about the new Chicago building, demonstrates his ability to delegates, and hears that Gene Jethro has strength despite Bludner’s support.
CURE receives intelligence through unaware assets and covert intermediaries while Harold Smith’s computer analysis and human problem-solving team evaluate the planned transportation combination. The analysis predicts the combined sellers could dictate prices. Smith tells Remo to proceed to the extreme plan; Remo refuses, calling himself a human being.
As Gene Jethro wins the Drivers presidency, Remo reflects that Sinanju training has changed him and plans to sabotage the planned announcement by dropping a convention-hall beam on the union leaders. He studies the schedule and delegation politics, including Anthony McCulloch’s opposition, while searching for a way to avoid killing them.
Jethro appears with his mistress at the victory party, shocking the delegates and their wives, then promises sharply higher wages and union pay if they support his vision. He says they will see by Friday how the drivers can turn the country on and off; he orders Sigmund Negronski to bring Remo to him.
Rocco Pigarello lures Remo toward a specially modified tractor-trailer ambush. Remo escapes the crushing truck and kills its two operators, then follows Pigarello and Sigmund Negronski back to Jethro. Jethro offers Remo a job and threatens him; Remo reveals he recognized the attempted murder and refuses to be drawn away from his duck errand.
Remo tells Smith he has an alternative to the mass killing and accepts Jethro’s offer to become recording secretary, then appears on television at the convention. Smith warns that exposure threatens CURE and receives a call from the President. Remo later tries to enter the secure Nuihc Street building, fails against defenses tailored to Sinanju, and Chiun recognizes the specialized design.
After presenting himself as Bludner’s loyal man, Remo visits Jethro’s guarded hotel floor and discovers the union chiefs kept there with mistresses. He questions Jethro’s girlfriend and personal secretary, Chris, who reveals Jethro’s recent behavioral change, his breathing exercises, and his connection to the secret building and Nuihc. Remo learns the identities of the other union chiefs and their plans, then gets Chris away from the hotel.
With Chris’s information, Remo locates the three hidden wives of the other transportation-union presidents and brings them to their husbands, hoping to disrupt the merger announcement. Two wives force their husbands to leave; the dockworkers’ president resists until Remo injures him. A hotel ambush plan is discussed by Jethro and Nuihc, who says a layered attack may kill Remo.
Pigarello briefs twenty-six men for an attack on Remo, disguising the planned killing as defense of a fellow driver. Remo sends Chris away in a cab and enters the hotel lobby, where a three-layer, twenty-seven-man ambush opens fire. Wounded, he uses the Scarlet Ribbon to turn the gunmen’s firing patterns against one another, rescues two children, and reports that his alternative plan failed; Smith authorizes the extreme plan.
Remo sets out with a crowbar bearing Bludner’s fingerprints to stage the fall of a convention-hall beam, but abandons the plan when he discovers the hall is empty and the convention has moved. He returns the crowbar to its apparent owners. Meanwhile Jethro recounts the failed ambush, kills Pigarello after Pigarello attacks him, and Negronski decides he wants out.
Chiun tells Remo that Nuihc is the son of his brother, was trained in Sinanju but deserted the village, and is the reason the Nuihc Street building resists Remo. Chiun says Remo is not ready to defeat him and orders Remo to wait five years; Remo refuses because he believes the United States faces immediate danger.
Remo enters the building, survives Jethro’s poison-mist trap, severs Jethro’s hand and leaves him alive in a Garby bag. Nuihc invites Remo to join him, offering fame, power, and a family life; Remo feigns acceptance and attacks, but Nuihc’s counter leaves him gravely wounded. Chiun intervenes, drives Nuihc away, and revives Remo, while insisting that patience is necessary.
Despite his injuries, Remo returns to the Drivers convention, fabricates Jethro’s resignation, and orchestrates Abe Bludner’s election as the new International Brotherhood of Drivers president. Bludner agrees to provide information to CURE and preserve the union’s independence. Remo arranges exposure of the other union presidents through Chris and the FBI; he accepts that he must disappear again and gives a final speech about America’s people and hope.

Union Bust:
Publisher's description: A rapidly rising labor leader seeks union power while unexplained violence and a mysterious construction project raise concern.
Current U.S. President: historical identity unresolved.
The unnamed story-present U.S. President receives briefings from the labor secretary and FBI director, orders the public event to continue and the FBI investigation withdrawn, then privately calls Smith through a concealed phone.
None from this book: the narrative provides no name, administration, story year, party, or unique biographical clue.
The President is deliberately unnamed in an undated story. April 17 is given without a year, and CURE’s existence or a four/eight-year joke does not uniquely identify an officeholder.
The narration describes a general rule that each President passes CURE’s secret to a successor until the organization eventually dissolves; it does not identify a particular historical officeholder.
None: this is a generic institutional succession description, not evidence identifying a specific President.
No named or otherwise distinguishable officeholder is described in these paragraphs; they do not establish that a separate identity should be inferred.
