Mafia Fix

A massive heroin shipment disappears after a Treasury operation at the Hudson waterfront goes disastrously wrong. CURE sends Remo Williams, posing as a journalist, to provoke the people behind the trade and locate the hidden cargo. His investigation moves through Hudson’s mob leadership, city government and an increasingly unstable chain of enforcers, while Remo’s old teacher Chiun becomes a target. The search uncovers a plan to repackage the heroin for distribution across the country.

After an undercover Treasury operation at Pier 27 loses a huge heroin shipment, Inspector Vincent Fabia is murdered and four drivers are trapped in a refrigerated pit, where they freeze to death. Remo kills security investigator Harry Hopkins, who has inferred CURE’s existence and tried to blackmail it. Dr. Harold W. Smith sends Remo to Hudson under the cover of magazine writer Remo Barry, ordering him to provoke the traffickers, find the hidden shipment and destroy it. Mob leader Dominic Verillio sells initial orders to regional crime bosses, but the cache remains hidden. Remo kills his former Newark colleague Bill Skorich and enforcer Gaetano Gasso; Chiun kills the three gunmen who seize him.

Three corrupt police officers later abduct Remo; he questions and kills them. Verillio tries to shoot Remo after destroying papers that could expose his own superior, and dies by gunshot as Remo enters. The mayor, Craig Hansen, is a public-facing decoy: his daughter Cynthia is also Verillio’s daughter and directs the heroin operation, with Myron Horowitz running its processing plant. As Britain, France and Japan threaten to act, Smith keeps Remo on the case while remembering that his own unnamed daughter is addicted to heroin. During his confrontation with Cynthia, Remo sexually assaults her. Remo later finds the trucks, kills Cynthia at the cache, and discovers two original drivers frozen in a cab.

Three foreign operatives then attack Horowitz’s factory; one kills Horowitz, while Remo neutralizes the other two. Treasury agents arrive, and the British operative phones a newspaper contact to claim credit. Willie the Plumber tries to flee with his savings; Remo catches and kills him after scratching his prized Eldorado.

Mafia Fix:

Publisher's description: A huge heroin shipment gives organized crime a chance to expand its reach, prompting the President to call on Remo and CURE.

Presidential clues

Current U.S. President: historical identity unresolved.

The President’s crisis briefing

Incumbent U.S. President receiving a report about the failed heroin seizure and asking Smith/CURE to resolve the crisis.

  • The President attends the Oval Office briefing with the attorney general, FBI and CIA directors, Treasury secretary and assistant attorney general.
  • He leaves the meeting to use a locked red telephone with a white dot to call the thin-voiced CURE head.
  • He calls the shipment “the two trucks”; the CURE head corrects him that there were four.
  • The President asks whether Remo will be used and whether the matter is under control.

none

No date or name is given; no biographical or policy clues support a historical identification.

Hopkins’s reconstruction of CURE’s founding

John F. Kennedy

  • Hopkins says he put himself in the place of a young president who was to be assassinated in Dallas.
  • Hopkins hypothesizes that this President created CURE and informed only a few people.
  • This is Hopkins’s reconstruction, not a direct flashback or explicit confirmation by the narrator.

High that “a young president who was to be assassinated in Dallas” is intended to refer to John F. Kennedy. Low that Hopkins’s account establishes the historical details or confirms the novel’s CURE founding history: he explicitly presents it as a reconstruction and hypothesis.

The Dallas-assassination clue strongly identifies the likely historical referent as John F. Kennedy, but Hopkins frames the CURE-origin account as his own imagined reconstruction, not as a verified founding record.

Smith considers contacting the President

The President is an authority Smith could contact to pull Remo from the assignment.

  • Smith considers telling the President he is withdrawing Remo.
  • Smith’s hand moves near the special White House phone, but he refrains after remembering his daughter’s addiction.

none

No identity or date is provided; the chapter does not show a completed call.

The final White House call

The President receives Smith’s report that the heroin matter is cleared and asks about Remo.

  • The President takes the call in his bedroom with shoes off.
  • He thanks Smith and asks whether “that person” is well.
  • Smith says he will convey the President’s concern and gratitude.

none

No name, date, or independent clue establishes a historical identity.

The recalled mission to China

The President is said to have been the patron of Remo and Chiun’s recent mission to China.

  • The passage refers to “a mission for the President” during the China incident.

none

No name or calendar year is stated.
