The Destroyer#88The Ultimate DeathThe DestroyerBook 881992
After a retaliatory killing at a health-food company, Remo and Chiun investigate a contaminated-chicken outbreak that reaches a New Jersey poultry farm and a restaurant chain. Their search draws them into a conflict with an old enemy, while a toxin leaves Chiun fighting to return from a private inner world.
Three-G founder Gregory Green Gideon is murdered by the blind gyonshi Leader and Mercy, who name Poulette Farms as their next target. In Newark, Remo breaks up a confrontation between the Spanish Spiders and Allah’s Swarm at the Rialto, then tries to make up with Chiun for missing his centennial kohi by serving him a ruddy duck. A fatal chicken-borne illness spreads from the Cahill family picnic to Tennessee Barbecued Chicken restaurants. At Folcroft, Harold W. Smith accepts chicken soup; a later chapter establishes that he became ill after eating it. The duck leads Remo and Chiun to Hinomaru and Poulette Farms. At the farm, Dr. Saul Silverberg diagnoses S.E.; Henry Cackleberry Poulette privately kills chickens despite his public anti-S.E. campaign.
Protesters gather at the farm, and Remo enters it. Sal Mondello is exposed contaminating the birds among the USDA inspection line; the narrative calls him a bogus inspector. Chiun kills him as he attacks Remo. Poulette tells Remo and Chiun that Don Pietro Scubisci arranged to place Sal at the farm; Poulette only speculates that Three-G may be involved. At Three-G, the Leader explains his intended Final Death and revenge on Sinanju. Mary Melissa Mercy reveals herself as the company’s executive vice-president and recalls her nursing work at Houston General: she helped the Leader leave under the name “Mr. Nichols,” leaving an elderly Chinese patient as a substitute.
Chiun finds Gideon’s skeleton rooted inside a garden oak. Remo and Chiun then pursue the mob connection; Remo kills Don Pietro during a raid, while Chiun identifies gyonshi among the Chinatown shopkeepers. A Taoist called Won Sik Lung treats Chiun, then betrays him; Remo kills Lung. At Folcroft, Smith and the doctors mistake the substituted patient for the original Leader. That patient punctures Smith, while the real Leader’s influence takes hold; Smith’s body later becomes the Leader’s vessel. The novel’s shifted viewpoints reveal the slaughter at Three-G and at Poulette Farms, but distinguish characters’ suspicions from what they know: Elvira first presents herself as a survivor before attacking Remo as a gyonshi.
Remo fights the attackers using the gyonshi burial site and Gideon’s bones. Chiun’s poisoning carries him through an internal landscape involving his father and dead nephew Nuihc; Remo appears there as part of Chiun’s mind, not as a bodily traveler. At Folcroft, Dr. Lance Drew uses electrical resuscitation when Smith suffers cardiac arrest, and orange smoke leaves Smith. At Three-G, Remo escapes a walnut-processing trap, discovers Mary’s black mist is produced by a grate, shocks her until orange smoke leaves, and kills her after she cuts her own throat; the exact form of his final blow is unstated. Remo confronts the Leader, whose death/disappearance is not physically explained.
Chiun’s inner struggle ends with an imagined Remo defeating the Leader, after which Chiun wakes. Two weeks later, the public account attributes the poultry outbreak to Poulette Farms and portrays the deaths at Poulette Farms as revenge by vegetarians. Smith secretly removes the Three-G victims and maintains that the group closed after taking revenge on Poulette. Remo and Chiun discuss electricity as a way to expel the virus, and Remo calls the gyonshi a sham while accounting for the earlier imagery as imitations. In the final scene, the Leader’s stripped skeleton hangs in the oak and his preserved brain is placed before Chiun, who crushes it.

Gideon leaves Happy Face after Dolly’s death, builds Three-G around health-food products, and is later killed by Mercy and the blind Leader, who select Poulette Farms as their next target.
At the Rialto, Remo intervenes in a confrontation involving the Spanish Spiders and Allah’s Swarm; his actions redirect the gang members’ gunfire and kill both leaders. The chapter also recounts his Newark history and return to town.
The Cahill family picnic and TBC customers suffer fatal illness after eating chicken; the outbreak spreads across the restaurant chain. At Folcroft, Smith is offered and accepts chicken soup; his later illness is addressed in a subsequent chapter.
Remo serves Chiun the poisoned ruddy duck unknowingly. The investigation follows the duck through Hinomaru and toward Poulette Farms; Chiun shows symptoms.
Dr. Saul Silverberg identifies S.E. in the chicken; Poulette’s public campaign against the disease contrasts with his private killing of a chicken and resentment rooted in childhood.
Remo and Chiun arrive at Poulette Farms amid animal-rights and anti-meat protests; Remo enters the farm as the protest and company connections complicate their inquiry.
Smith and CURE assess the food poisoning as a widespread chicken-contamination crisis while Remo and Chiun continue following the farm lead.
Chiun and Remo expose an apparent inspector contaminating birds on the USDA inspection line. Chiun kills him when he attacks Remo; Poulette identifies him as Sal Mondello, an in-house inspector. Who installed him is investigated next.
Poulette tells Remo and Chiun that Don Pietro Scubisci arranged for Sal to be placed at the farm; he only speculates that Three-G might be involved. Remo argues they should pursue Don Pietro in Little Italy.
From the Leader’s viewpoint, he describes gyonshi doctrine, the intended Final Death and the planned destruction of Sinanju; these are his stated beliefs and objectives.
Mary identifies herself as Mary Melissa Mercy, a Three-G executive, and the chapter’s retrospective material recounts Chiun’s childhood and the succession to Masterhood.
Chiun finds Gideon’s skeleton lodged within a garden oak at Three-G; he recognizes the ritual burial and returns to Remo and Mary.
Favio’s viewpoint recounts the Scubisci organization and its internal history. Remo and Chiun raid the group’s Little Italy front; Chiun says he disposed of Favio, and Remo later kills Don Pietro. Chiun cuts Don Pietro’s throat to release orange smoke.
Remo and Chiun face gyonshi shopkeepers in Chinatown; the fight ends with Remo killing the shopkeeper and Chiun killing his wife.
Won Sik Lung presents himself as a Taoist healer and gyonshi expert, then betrays Chiun; Remo kills Lung and releases orange smoke from him.
Remo and Chiun are taken to Folcroft for treatment. Smith’s response reflects his incomplete understanding of the Leader’s location and the threat; the team prepares to resume the investigation.
Elvira approaches Mary’s office, hears the stomach/afterlife ritual, and witnesses the Three-G group’s sacrificial violence. This chapter has not yet revealed that Elvira herself is a gyonshi; her later survivor account is still untested here.
At Folcroft, the substituted elderly patient is mistaken for the Leader’s original body. Smith believes the Leader contained; the decoy punctures Smith and the real Leader’s influence takes hold.
Mary reports that the Taoist infected Chiun and treats him as gyonshi; the Leader says the deaths number only in the thousands, short of his Final Death goal. He tells Mary she can continue the goal if he fails and calls her his nurse; these are their claims and plans.
Chiun experiences a shrinking hospital and an apparent escape, but the narrative returns him to his bed as doctors fear his nervous system is failing. Later his perspective shifts to mist and gyonshi at Folcroft. In parallel the Leader takes Smith as a vessel and uses him to warn Mary that Remo is coming; the scenes have different scopes.
Mary’s backstory explains her nursing work at Houston General, her infection by the Leader, and her switch of the true Leader with an elderly Chinese patient before she moved the original to Three-G.
Chiun’s poison-induced internal world presents his dead nephew Nuihc and accusations about his past; meanwhile Remo fights six gyonshi at Three-G. Their scenes are simultaneous but differently scoped.
Remo fights the garden gyonshi and uses Gideon’s bones as weapons. Elvira first claims to be a survivor, then reveals her gyonshi claw and attacks Remo; a gyonshi cat is also electrocuted.
At Folcroft, Smith suffers cardiac arrest; Dr. Lance Drew uses electrical resuscitation and orange smoke leaves Smith as his heart rhythm returns.
Remo escapes the walnut-processing machine, exposes Mary’s apparent mist as smoke from a grate, and shocks her until orange smoke leaves. Mary attempts to reinfect herself and cuts her own carotid artery; Remo kills her, but the exact killing blow is not detailed. The Leader’s ending is described without a physical mechanism.
Chiun meets his deceased father and fights the Leader in a poison-induced internal landscape. Remo appears as a mental manifestation; Chiun returns to consciousness after the conflict.
Chiun wakes at Folcroft. Two weeks later, the public attributes the outbreak to Poulette Farms and deaths at that farm to vegetarian revenge; Smith secretly removes the Three-G victims. Remo gives the virus/sham explanation, and Chiun crushes the Leader’s preserved brain after inspecting his stripped remains.
