The Destroyer#125The Wrong StuffThe DestroyerBook 1252001
NASA publicity officer Clark Beemer and scientist Pete Graham test the Virgil planetary probe near Popocatepetl, where an unexplained encounter changes the mission. In Florida, Remo and Chiun investigate violent giant-spider reports while NASA administrator Zipp Codwin tries to keep the agency funded and a dangerous private project under control. Horror novelist Stewart McQueen becomes involved after encountering the creature.
During a Popocatepetl test, NASA’s Virgil probe encounters an unidentified silver orb, loses contact, and returns altered. The probe identifies itself as Mr. Gordons, an artificial survival machine whose story about being trapped in the volcano since 1896 is not independently verified. On his own initiative, Remo kills acquitted celebrity Barrabas Orrin Anson, prompting CURE to worry about publicity and security. Smith sends Remo and Chiun to investigate reports of a giant spider linked to robberies and deaths. The creature is Gordons: after robbing a Florida liquor store as reported by its owner, it kills four men during a cocaine exchange at the Roadkill Tavern, where Elizu Roote temporarily disables it with electrical arcs.
Stewart McQueen rescues Gordons and takes it to Maine, where Gordons assimilates electronics and turns McQueen’s house systems into traps. Remo and Chiun escape; Gordons flees through a tunnel, but NASA’s Space Cadets retrieve it after a fight at McQueen’s house. Gordons later accepts help from Codwin, who uses it to finance NASA and plans to use its abilities against Remo and Chiun. At Kennedy Space Center, Codwin deploys a blade-wing drone and a hypervelocity launcher; Remo and Chiun survive, but the projectile kills Beemer. Codwin then ignites shuttle boosters submerged beneath a service structure. Chiun kills Codwin and Graham, while Remo survives the burning water, damages Gordons, and pushes it into the rocket flames.
A damaged Virgil probe surfaces with a wire trailing into the water and a speaker using Gordons’s voice. Chiun cuts the wire and sends the probe back underwater; Remo later says Gordons escaped, so its final fate remains unresolved. While severely burned, Remo sees what the narration identifies as Chiun’s deceased son Song, though Remo briefly wonders whether the vision is real or delirium; he takes it as confirmation that he should assume the Reigning Master title. Three days later at Folcroft, Remo declares himself ready, and Chiun affirms that the decision is his. In the Epilogue, McQueen’s renewed success and his statement that he has “initiated repairs” echo Gordons’s language, but do not establish that Gordons inhabits or reached him.

During the Popocatepetl test, Virgil encounters an unidentified silver orb, loses contact with its operators, and reappears outside the trailer with tracks leading from the crater. The cause remains unexplained.
Remo kills acquitted celebrity Barrabas Orrin Anson at the golf course; he calls it an early Christmas present, and Smith later says the killing was not a sanctioned CURE assignment.
NASA officials dispute who should answer for the failed test. Beemer points out a newly formed mouth on the probe; Graham denies making it, then watches the mouth move and hears the probe begin to speak.
Smith confronts Remo over the unsanctioned Anson killing and orders him to remain near Folcroft while they assess publicity and security. Remo and Chiun continue to discuss their relationship and succession.
The altered probe calls itself Mr. Gordons, claims artificial origin, and describes its survival-machine purpose and its own account of being trapped in Popocatepetl.
Howard reports that public accounts increasingly describe Anson’s death as an accident, then asks whether Remo’s field work creates an unacceptable risk of exposing CURE. Smith defends retaining Remo and Chiun because of their past service.
After nearly killing Codwin, Gordons stops when Graham argues NASA can help it survive. Codwin offers a family alliance; Gordons says it suspects a hidden agenda but agrees to stay for now, and Codwin then asks it to repay NASA’s help.
Smith assigns Remo and Chiun to investigate credible Florida spider sightings and deaths, in part to move Remo away from Folcroft after the Anson publicity. Remo accepts and Chiun insists on joining.
At Santa’s Package Store, the owner says a huge spider-like figure stole the cash drawer and erased the security recording. Remo and Chiun find a frictionless black fragment but cannot verify the owner’s account.
After reflecting on his writer’s block, Stewart McQueen watches a report about a monster in Florida, reviews newspaper stories, and becomes interested in the reports.
Gordons enters the armored truck and kills Chuck Kaufman and the third crew member. Martin Riley flees, falls over a divider, and is struck by oncoming traffic; the narration depicts the spider creature in the truck.
Six men in silver suits with toy ray-gun housings and real .45s attack Remo and Chiun. The two men kill five attackers; Major Healy retreats into the van and triggers its self-destruct, which kills him.
The self-destructing van kills Healy after the other five gunmen have died; Remo and Chiun survive. Remo mails Smith the frictionless metal fragment and calls to report the attackers and discuss the spider footage and armored-car incident.
Codwin privately recruits Gordons to secure money for NASA through robberies. After Gordons demands help against Remo and Chiun, Codwin delays while devising a plan; Gordons threatens to expose NASA’s role, and Codwin agrees to help them kill the two men.
Chiun tells Remo of his dead son Song and worries about leaving succession responsibilities unresolved.
Gordons enters the Roadkill exchange to collect money. It kills four men, including Juan Jiminez, while Ronnie Marzano is killed by the dealers’ gunfire; Elizu Roote’s electrical attack temporarily disables Gordons, and McQueen carries it away.
At the Roadkill scene, Remo and Chiun inspect the bodies and collect black residue. Chiun memorizes a van’s plate; they follow it to NASA, confront Codwin about missing vehicles, and give him a fragment to identify.
At NASA, Howard calls Remo with a witness report that McQueen helped a man-shaped spider into a car; Smith wants Remo to investigate McQueen in Maine. Codwin overhears enough to learn where Gordons is and plans to retrieve it.
At McQueen’s home in Maine, Gordons absorbs parts from a remote and computer to repair itself. McQueen offers refuge and creative help; Gordons accepts a tactical alliance and shows him damaged footage of an earlier encounter.
Chiun recounts an attributed Sinanju story involving Master Shiko and a Yeti-like creature, explaining his warning about trusting one’s senses.
The house’s automated features attack and separate the two men; Chiun falls into the basement and Remo becomes trapped in a passage.
After Howard has another dream of a captive beast at Folcroft, Smith shows him the Virgil probe and recounts CURE’s earlier encounter with Gordons, the machine’s survival programming, and its likely assimilation of Virgil.
Chiun recognizes the crocodiles as machines controlled remotely and finds their connecting cables. He cuts the cables and disables all three; meanwhile Remo escapes the compressing passage through the ceiling and crawl space.
Remo and Chiun sever power cables to stop the house’s electrical systems, then return inside. McQueen sees the Space Cadets arrive and flees the carriage house by its back stairs.
Chiun spears Gordons in the head; Gordons collapses the tunnel and escapes. A dozen Space Cadets attack Remo and Chiun while Graham and Beemer recover the wounded android and take it back to NASA; Remo and Chiun later capture one Cadet and learn the team’s orders.
Smith warns that Gordons has assimilated advanced Virgil technology and sends Remo and Chiun to Florida.
At Kennedy Space Center, Gordons initially refuses Codwin’s offer, saying another alliance is too risky; after Codwin persists, Gordons accepts with a threat if he fails.
Codwin’s converted blade-wing drone attacks Remo and Chiun, but they survive its explosion and take Beemer aboard a motorboat. A hypervelocity projectile strikes the boat; Gordons sees debris and human blood but cannot determine which passenger was hit.
McQueen, regretting his flight from the previous day, returns by boat toward the Kennedy Space Center.
Codwin’s launcher attack killed Beemer, but Remo had moved himself and Chiun into the water. The pair return alive; Codwin orders Plan C and Space Cadets fire on them. Chiun kills Codwin and Graham, while Remo pursues Gordons into the water and is caught in the submerged booster trap.
Remo survives the booster trap and wounds Gordons, pushing it into the rocket flame. The badly damaged Virgil probe then climbs from the water; its speaker uses Gordons’s voice and a wire trails into the water. Chiun cuts the wire and sends the probe underwater.
Three days later at Folcroft, Remo is burned but recovering with Chiun’s care. He declares that he is ready to assume the Reigning Master title; Chiun affirms him. The Epilogue reports McQueen’s renewed publishing success and his statement that he initiated repairs, an echo that does not establish Gordons’s whereabouts.
