The Destroyer#13Acid RockThe DestroyerBook 131973
After an open contract targets Vickie Stoner, the daughter of a wealthy commodities dealer and a witness in a grain-fraud case, an FBI protection detail collapses in a deadly attack and Vickie vanishes. CURE sends Remo Williams to find and protect her, following a tenuous lead toward the acid-rock scene while increasingly capable killers compete to claim the bounty.
FBI agent William Blake is assigned to protect Vickie Stoner, the nineteen-year-old daughter of commodities dealer Paul Stoner, who plans to testify about a Russian grain deal. Vickie’s flight from her father and a bombed plane convince Blake that the open contract on her life is real. In Denver, attackers kill Blake and several agents; Vickie escapes. Wreaths sent to the attackers’ funerals contain money and a note confirming payment for the failed hit. Harold Smith sends Remo Williams to find and protect her. Remo experiences Chiun’s predicted “night of the salt,” then takes a detour through an Atlanta Eagles football tryout. Meanwhile, Willie Bombella and attorney Morris Edelstein set out to pursue the contract.
A phone contact directs them toward Vickie and pays for a separate killing; Bombella kills Edelstein and later tries to attack Vickie at the North Adams Experience. Remo finds her at the concert, kills an armed would-be attacker, and gets her away from a tower collapse caused by Bombella’s sabotage. Bombella’s car explodes after Remo confronts him. Smith learns the open contract has increased to $1.5 million and discovers that the Nilsson family, a Swedish lineage of professional assassins, is involved. Lhasa Nilsson accepts the assignment to finance his brother Gunner’s poorly supplied African hospital. Gunner initially refuses to resume the family’s work, but Lhasa persuades him while still alive; after Lhasa dies, Gunner assumes the contract himself.
Vickie repeatedly slips away from Remo and becomes attached to acid-rock star Maggot, stage identity of investor Calvin Cadwallader. Lhasa reaches the Waldorf Astoria with would-be contract killers Abdul Hareem Barenga, Philander Jones and Piggy; he kills Piggy, Jones and a hotel waiter, then enters Remo and Chiun’s room. Chiun kills Lhasa; Remo incapacitates Barenga at the elevator and sends the elevator car down the shaft. Barenga survives critically injured until Gunner kills him later at the hospital. Gunner then follows Vickie to performances in Pittsburgh and Darlington. At the Pittsburgh show he kills another hired gun and shoots disc jockey Big Bang Benton, who had advertised information about Vickie.
Remo and Chiun arrive, but Vickie leaves with Maggot and the band. At Darlington’s enormous festival, Gunner infiltrates the stage and confronts Remo before charging toward Vickie. Chiun kills him. The crowd surges; Remo, Chiun, Vickie, Maggot and the Dead Meat Lice escape by helicopter. Vickie tells Remo that she calls her father every day with her location. Remo understands that Paul Stoner arranged the contract and knew where she was. Remo kills Stoner, stages his death as a suicide and leaves a confession implicating the other financiers in the grain swindle; Smith says Vickie will no longer need to testify.

FBI agent William Blake is assigned to protect Vickie Stoner, daughter of a wealthy commodities dealer who plans to testify about a Russian grain deal. After Blake briefly leaves the office, Vickie takes mescaline and the team misses a bombed flight. In Denver, attackers assault her hotel; Blake and multiple agents and attackers die, Vickie disappears, and wreath money proves the open contract is real. A report reaches Folcroft, prompting Harold Smith to contact Remo.
Remo experiences Chiun’s predicted night of the salt and impulsively joins the Atlanta Eagles’ open tryout, where he displays exceptional football ability and refuses an offer. Smith tells him to find and protect Vickie, whose location and status are unknown, and mentions acid rock as the only lead.
Attorney Morris Edelstein tells Willie Bombella about the open contract and a Chicago phone contact. Bombella agrees to pursue it; the men collect money and an instruction to kill Edelstein, who dies in a contrived demonstration before Bombella continues toward the festival.
Vickie recalls leaving her father’s home with evidence of his grain dealings and taking it to the U.S. Attorney in Miami. In Massachusetts, Bombella picks her and several hitchhikers up on their way to the North Adams Experience.
Remo and Chiun attend the North Adams Experience. Remo finds Vickie and kills an armed would-be attacker; Bombella sabotages a stage tower that collapses into the crowd. Remo takes Vickie to the motel, confronts Bombella, and hears that Bombella received instructions from a telephone contact.
Remo survives the explosion of Bombella’s car and reports Vickie safe. Smith receives word that the contract account has grown and learns the name Lhasa Nilsson; an old adventure magazine reveals the Nilsson family’s history as hired killers and Lhasa’s brother Gunner.
Lhasa hunts dangerous game in Africa, meets his doctor brother Gunner, and persuades him that the million-dollar contract could finance a proper hospital. Gunner resists the family’s assassination trade. Lhasa, not Gunner, calls the Swiss contact at the end of the chapter to accept the assignment and ask that amateurs be kept out.
The concert casualty count is reported, and a recording of the North Adams Experience becomes a commercial hit. Remo and Chiun keep Vickie at the Waldorf Astoria; after Vickie interrupts Chiun, Remo revives her, but she disappears again. The chapter ends as Lhasa checks into the hotel.
Barenga, Philander and Piggy arrive in New York after “Sweet Harold” recruits them through a trucking company. Lhasa enters their room, kills Piggy, Philander and a returning waiter, and forces Barenga to impersonate room service and take him upstairs toward Vickie.
Lhasa and Barenga enter the apartment where Chiun waits. Lhasa and Chiun discuss their families’ old contest, and Chiun kills Lhasa after he fires and misses. Barenga charges Remo at the elevator; Remo strikes him and sends the elevator car down the shaft. Barenga is left critically injured, not killed here. Remo conceals Lhasa’s body.
Vickie reaches radio station WAIL and is led into Big Bang Benton’s dressing room in hopes of meeting Maggot. A station publicist schedules Maggot’s gold-record presentation at the Hotel Carlton; Frankie tells Benton that information about Vickie could be very valuable. Vickie leaves for the hotel.
Maggot is shown as Calvin Cadwallader, a successful investor who regards his public stage identity as distinct from himself. After learning from Benton that Vickie is sought, he meets her at his suite; Vickie arrives intoxicated and collapses.
Gunner arrives at a village near a British field officer’s home and calls the Swiss contact. On learning Lhasa is dead and the contract remains open, Gunner tells the caller to close it; he will complete the job himself.
Smith warns Remo about the Nilssons while Remo says he will look for Vickie through Maggot. In a concurrent scene Vickie is with a band member and attempts to reach Maggot. Chiun requires a proper burial for Lhasa; Remo disposes of his body through the hotel incinerator chute, then the two leave to find Vickie.
The Dead Meat Lice decide Vickie can remain with them as the band departs for Pittsburgh. Gunner visits the gravely injured Barenga, learns where and how Lhasa died, then kills him and heads to room 1821 at the Waldorf.
At Pittsburgh’s Mosque Theater, Gunner enters disguised as a doctor and sees a hired gun aimed toward Vickie. He kills the gunman, then shoots Big Bang Benton for promoting the contract. He chooses to keep Vickie alive until he can confront Remo and Chiun; they arrive as he leaves.
Remo reaches Vickie backstage and introduces himself to Maggot. A meat toss causes a crush of fans; in the darkness Remo cannot find Vickie, who leaves with Maggot and the band in a Rolls-Royce.
Gunner calls Switzerland to report other killers are after Vickie and warns that no more amateurs should interfere at Darlington. Smith tells Remo that Lhasa’s body is identified and that the Nilsson family is seeking revenge against Remo and Chiun; Remo plans to recover Vickie at Darlington.
Maggot, the Dead Meat Lice and Vickie drive overnight to Darlington, where the band will be flown to its show. Vickie demonstrates financial knowledge and Maggot stops her from taking another pill. Remo and Chiun become trapped in festival traffic; Chiun sees Gunner walking toward Darlington.
At the packed festival, Gunner infiltrates the stage area and confronts Remo, then charges toward Vickie. Chiun kills him. The crowd swarms the stage; Remo and Chiun escape with Vickie and Maggot by helicopter. Vickie reveals she calls her father daily, allowing Remo to infer that Paul Stoner was behind the contract.
Remo kills Paul Stoner, stages the death as suicide and leaves a confession that implicates other grain-swindle participants. Smith says federal agents will find the body and note, so Vickie need not testify. Remo and Chiun discuss the Nilssons and their encounter at the theater.
