The Destroyer#90Ghost in the MachineThe DestroyerBook 901992
On Halloween, a financial collapse leaves developer Randal Rumpp facing creditors just as people begin disappearing near his Manhattan tower and its phones ring with voices trapped inside. CURE sends Remo to investigate. News anchor Cheeta Ching and self-described witch Delpha Rohmer arrive to cover the crisis, while the tower’s visible entrance proves impossible to cross normally.
On Halloween, indebted developer Randal Rumpp faces foreclosure as telephones ring with voices claiming to be trapped and people disappear through the pavement by Rumpp Tower. Remo, using the reunion cover Edgar Perry, kills terrorist Manuel “The Weasel” Silva and is sent by CURE chief Harold W. Smith to investigate. Cheeta Ching arrives to report on the threshold anomaly; she, Chiun and Delpha Rohmer join Remo, while Delpha attributes events to Baphomet and Wicca. The team tests the tower, and Cheeta and Chiun sink from sight. Remo falls into the space below the building and later reunites with the others. Rumpp exploits the crisis, falsely claims to have caused it, and pitches a publicly funded replacement tower.
A strange cable-covered apparition calls itself Grandfather Frost, travels through telephone lines, and its departure changes the tower again. Delpha sells her haunting footage to the Multinational Broadcast Company, while former KGB major Yuli Batenin recognizes the figure as Captain Rair Nicolaivitch Brashnikov and joins Shchit’s effort to retrieve the vibration suit. Smith connects Brashnikov to an earlier CURE telephone trap. The anomaly shifts to Rumpp Regis; Brashnikov appears through a guest and then Batenin, and Remo and Chiun rescue Cheeta; Remo kills Batenin. Brashnikov surrenders himself while still wearing the suit but escapes through a telephone. A Shchit contact and a Nishitsu representative give separate accounts of the suit’s origin and its effects on the connected phone systems; the latter attributes the tower’s sinking to its returning mass.
Brashnikov returns to Rumpp Tower; Remo throws Rumpp through a window, killing him, while Brashnikov escapes by redialing a phone last connected to Nishitsu. Smith questions whether he survived the long-distance satellite transfer. Smith says he will brief an unnamed President. The embedded winter Epilogue shows three unidentified apparitions rise from the ground in Kazakhstan’s Tian Shan valley as local riders play buzkashi. Their identities and Brashnikov’s final fate remain unresolved.

Cheeta entrusts her tape to Delpha; Delpha’s public ritual does not repair the tower, and she disappears with the tape, which Cheeta later notices missing.
Remo reports the crisis to Smith, who orders Remo and Chiun away from the tower and tells them to lie low at a hotel.
Delpha presents MBC with footage she says proves Baphomet is behind the haunting; Knute Graff agrees to buy the tape and arrange its broadcast.
Former KGB major Yuli Batenin sees the broadcast, recognizes the faceless figure as Brashnikov and contacts a reconstituted security service.
Remo calls the figure a hologram; Smith says the President is under pressure, and Chiun proposes the tower stands on a cursed site and asks for his ritual trunk.
Colonel Radomir Rushenko identifies Captain Rair Nicolaivitch Brashnikov, reinstates Batenin and orders him to recover the vibration suit.
Remo and Smith identify Brashnikov as the Krahseevah from their earlier encounter, recount the Folcroft telephone trap, and suspect—but cannot establish—that Rumpp is working with him.
Batenin travels with a hardline Shchit/GRU unit to New York and lodges at the Rumpp Regis.
Rumpp again pursues help from the mayor and his father; Grandfather Frost reappears through a telephone and offers to return Rumpp’s lighter.
Smith warns that the IRS is seizing the hotel; Remo detects an armed Russian guest, reports Russians to Chiun, and Chiun begins a drum-and-wand ritual.
Rumpp hires the telephone apparition to enter the seized hotel; Frost explains the vibration suit and reduces its power, after which the hotel lights come on.
Cheeta and Delpha enter the Regis and sink through its surfaces; Vonneau answers the phone and Brashnikov’s figure emerges, then appears through Batenin.
Remo rescues Cheeta from the altered floor; he and Chiun attack the armed unit, Batenin identifies himself and his mission, and Brashnikov loses power and falls. Remo kills Batenin by piercing his brain. Brashnikov turns off the suit and surrenders himself, still wearing it.
After Brashnikov’s telephone contact, Rumpp Tower begins sinking; Rumpp calls Igoria, Shchit and Nishitsu. The Shchit contact and Nishitsu representative give separate information about the suit.
Brashnikov evades immediate capture through the hotel’s phone system. Remo and Chiun reach him again at Rumpp Tower; Cheeta agrees to keep their identities secret.
The Nishitsu technician attributes the tower’s sinking to its mass returning to the ground. Remo confronts Rumpp, who falls from the tower and dies; Brashnikov escapes through a telephone whose last dialed number was Nishitsu’s; Smith doubts whether the required satellite transfer preserved his integrity. Smith will brief the unnamed President, and the embedded Epilogue depicts three unidentified apparitions emerging in Kazakhstan.

Unnamed national President whom Harold W. Smith says he will brief after the CURE operation; the U.S. CURE setting points to a national U.S. office, though the text does not specify jurisdiction by name.
national officeholder role explicit in CURE context; identity unresolved
Only generic references (“the President,” “The President’s on his back,” and “whoever may rule it”) occur. No name, term, biography, distinctive action or absolute story year resolves the officeholder. Smith’s briefing plan is a real role clue; Delpha’s Sisterhood presidency is separate.
