Don Cooder

Named in 7 guided books, from #84 Ground Zero

Contains spoilers for the series.

Don Cooder is the lead anchor of the BCN Evening News in The Destroyer novels. He accepts assignments in war zones and other dangerous settings because he wants his program to lead the ratings. Although millions watch his broadcast, the early account says the program remains last among its competitors.

[1]

Media operation

Cooder’s work sometimes puts him near dangerous operations. During a visit to Lawrence Livermore, he keeps Woody Robbins occupied while Sky obtains material used in a plot to build a nuclear device. The passage places Cooder in the distraction, though it does not establish that he knows the full purpose of the theft.

[2]

During the Irait crisis, Hinsein’s claim that Remo has defected serves as propaganda for Remo’s infiltration plan. Remo uses Cooder and Reverend Jackman as leverage while negotiating for their release.

[3]

On assignment in Irait, Cooder is taken hostage in Abominadad and continues to report from captivity. He presents the detention as a first for BCN and narrates events as a news story. Reverend Juniper Jackman, a perennial presidential candidate who travels there to seek his release, is also held captive.

[4]

After the regime collapses, Cooder and Jackman remain in danger during a panicked flight through the capital. They survive a stampede and take shelter in a bomb-resistant building. Even while fearing for his life, Cooder imagines the publicity of returning home as a presumed-dead hostage.

[5]

Later stories show Cooder competing with BCN correspondent Cheeta Ching. After an attack on Ching, she accuses him of staging it; Cooder denies the allegation. The scenes establish a hostile newsroom rivalry but do not prove Ching’s accusation.

[6]

Fate

Chiun tells Cooder that his later betrayal has ended an earlier promise not to harm him. He takes Cooder by the arm; the narration describes pain, chains tightening around Cooder’s throat, and his death by hanging. Cooder is found with his body twisted into an anchor shape.
