Maude Smith is the wife of Harold W. Smith, director of CURE, the covert organization at Folcroft Sanatorium. Her husband keeps his government work secret from her. She appears in stories involving the cost of that secrecy and the uncertainty surrounding Remo Williams’s past.

[1]

Marriage and home

Maude knows Harold as a researcher but does not know the nature of his government work. Her account of finding a letter from General Eisenhower praising Harold’s wartime service remains her recollection; she says Harold only told her he had worked “in codes.” The novels also describe the strain of his long absences: Maude begins to feel neglected, while Smith privately treats Folcroft as home and the Rye house as a place where he sleeps and eats.

[2]

In a nighttime encounter, a figure Smith takes for Maude says she gave birth to a son while he was away in the Philippines and placed him for adoption, unsure whether Harold or another man was the father. Remo challenges the story as a fantasy; Smith later says he will call his wife to revisit their discussion. The episode leaves both the figure’s identity and the claimed parentage unresolved.

[3]

Other appearances

After Chiun is believed to have died in a neutron-bomb incident, Maude is among the people who report seeing his apparition. Smith’s hidden camera also records a figure; he reaches toward it and his hand passes through the image. Chiun is later found alive.

Source notesIdentity and text locators

Source-context continuity of Harold W. Smith’s long-standing wife. Book70 explicitly explains Maude as her name and Irma as her pet name (ch05:p0037–p0042), bridging the older Maude/unnamed-wife and Irma groups. Each book’s portrayal and naming remain source-scoped; this is not a claim of a transcription error or a second marriage.

destroyer-024:b24-mrs-harold-smith: Lead compared identifying primary passages and reviewed roles for Mrs. Harold W. Smith: Smith’s wife, who does not know his covert work and believes he is a dull federal researcher. This is compatible with the existing destroyer-014-maude-smith subject (Harold Smith’s wife; receives the message directing Remo to Washington.). The source’s own labels, narrative/mention/paratext scope, attributed statements and uncertainty remain in its observation; this decision does not assert real-world accuracy of fictional acts. (witness:00000069:ch14:p0001; witness:00000039:ch05:p0054).

destroyer-038:mrs-smith: Primary contextual review establishes the recurring subject through its CURE/Sinanju role and compatible earlier observation. Smith’s wife in Remo’s speculation about people who might love him. Preserve source labels and attributed roles; a missing surname is not invented as an observed alias. (witness:00000111:ch02:p0012; witness:00000039:ch05:p0054).

destroyer-070:maude-smith: Same Smith wife/household subject. Book 70 explicitly says her name is Maude and Irma is her pet name (ch05:p0037–p0042); earlier series books use Irma as her wife-name form. Preserve both source naming practices without inferring two wives. Lead inspected the proposed primary contexts; supplementary direct identifying anchors replace incidental context where needed. (witness:00000204:ch05:p0040; witness:00000204:ch05:p0041; witness:00000204:ch13:p0130; witness:00000204:ch05:p0037; witness:00000204:ch05:p0038; witness:00000204:ch05:p0039; witness:00000204:ch05:p0042; witness:00000039:ch05:p0054; witness:00000159:ch04:p0003; witness:00000171:ch17:p0031).

destroyer-077:maude-smith: Book 77 names Maude as Smith’s wife and later identifies Maude Smith; Book 14/70 use the same named wife and household context. Book 49/55/59 call Smith’s wife Irma; whether this is a source continuity/name inconsistency is unresolved, so Irma is not treated as an alias and that distinct observation is deferred. Lead inspected the proposed primary contexts; supplementary direct identifying anchors replace incidental context where needed. (witness:00000225:ch05:p0009; witness:00000225:ch05:p0015; witness:00000225:ch40:p0003; witness:00000039:ch05:p0054; witness:00000204:ch13:p0133).

destroyer-064:maude-smith: Same wife explicitly identified by marital role and Maude name; Book70 supplies the Maude/Irma pet-name bridge. This is only a retrospective visit reference. (witness:00000186:ch12:p0166; witness:00000204:ch05:p0037; witness:00000204:ch05:p0042).

destroyer-071:mrs-harold-w-smith: Book 71 directly identifies Mrs. Smith as Harold’s wife. Book 70 explicitly explains that her name is Maude and Irma is her pet name; Book 14 provides the canonical Maude Smith household history. No second-wife inference. Lead inspected the proposed primary contexts; supplementary direct identifying anchors replace incidental context where needed.
