Reverend Titus Powell travels from Jason, Georgia, to Patna to find Joleen Snowy, but she has joined the Divine Bliss Mission and refuses to leave. Maharaji Gupta Mahesh Dor subjects Powell to a coercive program of sex, drugs and persuasion; Powell resists and dies. The Patna prophecy that harm to holy men brings calamity helps shield the mission from officials after an earthquake. CURE sends Remo Williams and Chiun to investigate a reported American “big thing.” At a New Mexico motel Chiun kills an armed man called Clete; Smith says a CURE defector also used Clete as a hiding name, though the narrative does not say whether they are the same.

A sheriff working for Dor dies during Chiun’s questioning. In San Diego, Remo and Chiun encounter the mission’s recruiters and learn the event is at Kezar Stadium. Chiun discovers Ilhibad guards have left their mountain home and drives them back. In the deserted Patna compound Remo finds a dead American and Joleen, who tells him Dor has gone to California. In New Orleans, stockbroker Ferdinand De Chef Hunt learns that his maternal family’s hereditary skill with thrown objects can be used as a weapon. His employers Winthrop Dalton and V. Rodefer Harrow persuade him to join Dor’s movement; Dor hires him to kill Remo and Chiun.

Smith discovers that Dor has leased Kezar Stadium and that CURE’s secrecy may have been compromised. In San Francisco, Remo and Chiun reconnect with Joleen at a local mission run by Gasphali Krishna, actually Irving Rosenblatt, who admits he faked conversion and knows little about Dor’s plan. Hunt attacks Remo at a church carnival with metal plates and cuts a cable on a ride carrying Chiun and Joleen; Chiun holds the car together until it can be stopped. Elton Snowy arrives with a posse to retrieve Joleen and later buys explosives and a gun. CIA deputy director Cletis Larribee, a Baptist lay preacher, is a willing participant in Dor’s planned televised event, where he is to expose state secrets and endorse the Blissful Master.

At Kezar, Remo contains Snowy’s bomb in Larribee’s briefcase. Hunt attacks with stones; he kills a guard, and Remo kills Hunt. Remo kills Dalton and Harrow and pressures Larribee not to reveal secrets. Larribee instead sings “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”; Dor’s broadcast collapses and he leaves the country. Snowy reunites with Joleen but knocks her unconscious when she says she loves Chiun. Smith later reports Larribee died in a car explosion, while the apparent CURE security leak was caused by a low-level clerk. The novel does not connect the explosion to Snowy’s bomb, which Remo had contained in Larribee’s briefcase. Chiun returns after saying he has inflicted a delayed fatal blow on Dor, and decides to stay with Remo to continue his training. Remo ends by saying he will rent a submarine for the postponed trip to Sinanju.

  1. Chapter 1

Reverend Titus Powell travels from Jason to retrieve Joleen Snowy, but she has joined the Divine Bliss Mission. Maharaji Gupta Mahesh Dor subjects Powell to coercive sexual and drug conditioning; Powell resists by invoking Jesus and dies after a week. An earthquake hits Patna, officials confirm no protected holy men died, and Powell’s body is hidden among famine dead. A message sends Chiun to India for an incident involving his employer.

  2. Chapter 2

While Remo trains against Chiun’s lacquered plates in Roswell, an intruding plate breaks through the Rhoda Motel wall. A man calling himself Clete threatens them with a gun and is killed by Chiun; Remo and Chiun hide with the body until Smith arrives. Smith explains that CURE has lost agents investigating Divine Bliss and that an American “big thing” may be coming. Chiun negotiates for a visit to Sinanju en route to Patna.

  3. Chapter 3

Smith identifies the mission: learn what Dor is doing with Americans and stop any danger. A sheriff associated with the Blissful Master tails them; they capture him and learn he killed a follower for the cult and knows of a San Diego storefront mission. Chiun kills the sheriff and invents a Sinanju-records rationale for a home visit; the team decides to stop in San Diego first.

  4. Chapter 4

In Patna, an arch-priest warns Dor of a Sinanju Master from an Ilhibad tradition and the danger posed by the shattered-neck death in New Mexico. Dor dismisses the warning, plans the Kezar Stadium event, and decides to hire an assassin. He bargains with a dying Baptist minister for the name of the De Chef/Hunt family and breaks his promise to free the imprisoned ministers.

  5. Chapter 5

Remo and Chiun defeat the Black Skulls gang outside the San Diego mission. Inside, the arch-priest tries to recruit Remo through Blissful teachings and sexual conditioning. He reveals that Dor’s “big” event is at Kezar Stadium and names influential followers but cannot explain the event. Chiun kills him and says an older obligation requires delaying the Sinanju trip.

  6. Chapter 6

Smith arranges passports and Remo and Chiun travel to Patna. Chiun drives the Ilhibad guards out of Dor’s compound and back toward the mountains. Remo finds a dead American prisoner and a distraught Joleen, who tells him Dor has gone to Kezar Stadium and describes the event as proof that Dor “grows.”

  7. Chapter 7

In New Orleans, Ferdinand De Chef Hunt’s employers discover his inherited ability to control thrown objects. They persuade him that he has already broken his promise not to use the skill for money, then invite him to meet the Blissful Master.

  8. Chapter 8

Smith sees a lease for a Divine Bliss “religious meeting” at Kezar Stadium and reviews the risk posed by Dor’s followers. While deciding to hospitalize known converts, he realizes CURE has been compromised. At San Francisco airport, manager Martin Mandelbaum orders staff to remove Dor’s posters; deputy Kelly secretly retrieves and restores them.

  9. Chapter 9

Remo and Chiun escort Joleen through the San Francisco airport, where she worships Dor’s poster. Remo tells Smith about the Kezar rally, the Baptist ministers and the possible compromised CURE insider. Smith asks Remo to identify Dor’s other American followers while Chiun continues to object to postponing Sinanju.

  10. Chapter 10

At the San Francisco Divine Bliss mission, Joleen meets other followers. Remo learns its chief arch-priest, Gasphali Krishna, is actually Irving Rosenblatt, a cynical organizer who faked his conversion and does not know the Kezar plan. Krishna reports that the San Diego arch-priest has been killed with a crushed neck.

  11. Chapter 11

Back in Jason, Elton Snowy talks with a racist bartender about Joleen and Powell, and enlists the bartender, Fester and Puling to go with him to San Francisco.

  12. Chapter 12

Dor summons Hunt to his Mill Valley hideout and hires him to kill Remo and Chiun for $100,000. Hunt demonstrates his skill at electronic Ping-Pong, then accepts the assignment and begins to enjoy the idea of killing.

  13. Chapter 13

Joleen’s faith in Dor weakens and she says she no longer wants to return to Patna. Remo takes her and Chiun to a church carnival. Hunt locates them and tries to kill Remo with metal plates; after Remo blocks them, Hunt cuts the Flying Bucket’s cable. Chiun holds the ride together, saving himself and Joleen, and Hunt escapes after fighting off Snowy’s posse.

  14. Chapter 14

Hunt tells Dor that Remo and Chiun are formidable but assures him he can kill them. Snowy buys shotgun shells, a revolver, and railroad detonating caps; the purchases are reported to the CIA. Dor proceeds with the rally.

  15. Chapter 15

CIA deputy director Cletis Larribee worries that Dor may be in danger, but Dalton and Harrow reassure him and confirm he is expected to disclose secrets at Kezar Stadium to attract Americans to Dor. In Folcroft, Smith sees the threat remains poorly understood.

  16. Chapter 16

At Kezar Stadium, Dor appears in disguise and prepares to present Larribee as a convert. Snowy arrives with a bomb disguised under fried chicken; Remo seals it in Larribee’s briefcase. Hunt’s attack kills a guard and Remo kills Hunt, then Remo kills Dalton and Harrow and prevents Larribee from revealing secrets. Larribee sings a hymn instead. Dor’s broadcast collapses; Snowy reunites with Joleen but knocks her unconscious when she declares love for Chiun. Chiun says he is leaving for Dor’s employ, and Remo walks away.

  17. Chapter 17

Remo cannot bring himself to drink and returns to an empty suite. Smith says Larribee was killed in a car explosion and identifies a low-level clerk as CURE’s leak. The news says Dor will not return to America and the stadium rally ended in violence. Chiun returns for his television and says he gave Dor a delayed fatal strike, then decides to stay and continue Remo’s training; Remo says he will rent a submarine.
