The narrative Prologue says Durthang carves one wooden block bearing four map regions for Siegfried; Siegfried kills him and splits the block into four sections. After Siegfried dies, Bal-Mung retrieves one fragment from the river, and a falcon helmet is recovered. In the present, Remo tracks Gustav Reichschtadt—who was born Gus Holloway—and Kempten toward IV and its leader, Adolf Kluge. Remo, Chiun and Heidi Stolpe attack IV's Argentine village, but Kluge and Herman flee by helicopter as the tunnel collapses. Smith's actions have also weakened IV's finances. Suk steals a carved map section and coins from Sinanju for Kluge. Chiun recounts Bal-Mung's search for the Nibelungen Hoard; Heidi claims descent from Gunther and presents map sections, including one later revealed to be a forgery.

Kluge, Heidi and Chiun combine their drawings and travel to a false excavation, where a runic warning marks the empty site. During the ensuing firefight, police capture Kluge while several Number trucks flee separately. Heidi independently locates the true chamber near the Danube, where the Hoard is uncovered. Kluge secretly triggers a trap that collapses and floods the chamber. Remo rescues Heidi, and Chiun escapes; Kluge takes part of the gold before Remo kills him. The remaining treasure initially disappears with Heidi. Chiun then receives a letter and key directing him to half the Hoard stored in Bonn; the Epilogue confirms Remo and Chiun moved that half, while Heidi hides her own half beneath her castle and leads thirty surviving Numbers in a renewed Four.

  1. Chapter 1

At the IV village, Kluge reviews reports and photographs of an assassin targeting neo-Nazi associates, rejects Herman's suggestion to involve Interpol, and says Remo is getting closer.

  2. Chapter 2

Remo pursues Gustav Reichschtadt, born Gus Holloway, whose claims point to Kempten and the suspected Four network; Remo kills Gustav. The chapter reports claims about Four rather than confirming all of Gustav's claims.

  3. Chapter 3

At Folcroft, Smith works from the reported name of Kempten Olmutz-Hohenzollerkirchen and logs Remo's call. This continues CURE's investigation rather than establishing Kluge's location.

  4. Chapter 4

Remo confronts Kempten at the beer hall, learns Kempten's partial lead toward Uruguay and South America, then kills him.

  5. Chapter 5

Kluge learns Kempten is dead and plans IV's defense; he considers the carved wood and sends agents toward the airport. His intentions are not the same as completed actions.

  6. Chapter 6

Identical mute men attack Remo and Chiun at Tegel. Remo kills two, Chiun conceals his attacker in a maintenance closet, and a further blond man is later shown aboard their flight without being noticed. Smith subsequently discusses a report describing triplets; that report is distinct from the narrative’s account.

  7. Chapter 7

Smith uses satellite resources to search for the village, while Kluge organizes remaining troops and Numbers after the airport attack.

  8. Chapter 8

Heidi shoots Dieter Groth before he can give Remo more than a partial lead; she later reports that contacts placed Kluge in an unlisted Argentine-Andes village and provides a map marked IV?. The report is not direct confirmation.

  9. Chapter 9

Remo, Chiun and Heidi assault the IV village. Kluge remotely destroys the bridge; Remo and Chiun cross using a ladder and follow an escape tunnel to an empty helipad, hearing the departing helicopter. Heidi joins them outside before the tunnel explodes and collapses, blocking the short route back. Kluge escapes and the subsequent search fails.

  10. Chapter 10

North Korean official Keijo Suk enters the Sinanju treasury and takes a carved wood fragment; the three dropped coins are found later at Chiun's house. The exact extent of his theft remains under investigation.

  11. Chapter 11

Back at Folcroft, Smith says he has frozen IV's financial network; a Korean call tells Chiun a House of Sinanju object was stolen. Remo and Chiun agree to travel to Sinanju.

  12. Chapter 12

The chapter recounts Kluge's rise as IV's leader and shows Suk deliver the stolen carved fragment; Kluge refuses the full payment and injures Suk when he tries to take the valise.

  13. Chapter 13

Chiun tells Remo that Bal-Mung sought Siegfried's hidden Nibelungen Hoard and never found it; he says a four-part map was split among several parties. This is Chiun's version of the legend.

  14. Chapter 14

Smith traces Suk's coins to North Korea. Heidi joins Remo and Chiun, claiming descent from Gunther and saying she found a section among Kluge's belongings at IV.

  15. Chapter 15

At Pyongyang airport, Chiun gets the coins from Suk's escort, learns Kluge has the wood fragment and kills Suk. Suk cannot provide Kluge's location.

  16. Chapter 16

Kluge opens box 80 at a Berlin bank and retrieves his family's carved section and a blurred photo of another section; he says his father had taken objects from Hagan descendants. Kluge believes he knows where the last section is.

  17. Chapter 17

Kluge orders Hirn's group to steal a block; at the Stolpe castle, Remo kills Erwin and another skinhead during a fight, and Heidi recovers a carved section hidden in a dungeon wall. Hirn identifies Kluge as the sender; Remo kills Hirn after learning Kluge's inn location.

  18. Chapter 18

Remo nearly strangles Kluge at the Black Forest inn but releases him after Chiun pleads. Heidi and Kluge negotiate with Chiun; Kluge secretly plans to kill the others after reaching the treasure.

  19. Chapter 19

Chiun, Heidi and Kluge leave with trucks and neo-Nazi supporters; Remo stays behind. An unnamed German chancellor receives a fax marked IV and fears financial damage.

  20. Chapter 20

Smith finds IV-signed messages sent to brokerage firms; the market has fallen slightly and Smith fears a larger crash if the rumors prove true.

  21. Chapter 21

Smith orders Remo to stop Kluge. Remo intercepts the police convoy, tests Colonel Heine's loyalty and joins him as they follow the expedition into the forest.

  22. Chapter 22

Chiun and Kluge draw map portions from memory and Heidi supplies the remaining drawing; Chiun says he knows the location. Remo and Heine follow the expedition by jeep.

  23. Chapter 23

At the first site, skinheads uncover Siegfried’s runic marker but find no Hoard beneath it. During the ensuing firefight, police capture Kluge while several Number trucks flee separately.

  24. Chapter 24

Heidi reveals her castle fragment was a forgery and independently locates the real sealed chamber near the Danube. Kluge captures her there; Remo and Chiun arrive, open the stone door and discover gold below.

  25. Chapter 25

The group carries gold and jewels from the underground rooms. Kluge secretly uses the route on his map section to trigger the structure's collapse and flood the chamber with Danube water.

  26. Chapter 26

Remo rescues Heidi and carries her through the flooded passage to the Danube bank; Chiun also escapes. Kluge steals part of the Hoard, and Remo and Chiun leave to pursue him.

  27. Chapter 27

Remo and Chiun find Kluge in a Berlin warehouse. Remo kills Kluge and paints “IV Ends Here”; at the Danube site the remaining treasure is gone and Heidi is missing. The subsequent Epilogue supplies the account of Heidi’s storage and surviving group.

  28. Chapter 28

Smith reports his post-operative recovery and says he cannot locate Heidi or the Hoard. Chiun receives a letter he attributes to Heidi, with a key and directions to half the Hoard in Bonn. The embedded Epilogue confirms Remo and Chiun moved that half; Heidi hides her own half beneath her castle with thirty surviving Numbers and says Four will move cautiously and swiftly.

Presidential clues

No current or succession assessment is available; other retained presidential references remain in context.

Unnamed German chancellor

Unnamed incumbent German chancellor who receives IV's fax, interprets the threat as economic destabilization, and orders the Federal Border Police to respond.

  • Receives an IV-signed fax at 9 a.m. warning about a Hoard and German-market threat.
  • Orders the Federal Border Police chief to locate IV in the Black Forest.
  • Chooses Colonel Friedrich Heine because he opposes Nazis and later authorizes reconnaissance planes.

High that the cited scenes concern one unnamed German incumbent; the text supplies office/action clues but no unique personal identification.

The novel gives the German office, several actions and opposition to Nazis, but no personal name or sufficiently distinctive historical clue to establish a unique officeholder or story year.
