Pullyang is the name used for an elderly village caretaker who serves Chiun and the House of Sinanju. He is not a Master: his roles are practical and local, from receiving visitors to tending property and helping when Chiun is away. Several novels return to this village caretaker.
Caretaker of the village and House
Pullyang formally welcomes Chiun, carries messages and receives visitors at the House. Another story places him at the treasure house, where he is expected to stay alert for the Master’s return. When villagers flee after seeing strange purple birds, Pullyang goes to call them back and later tells Chiun about the birds; the episode does not establish whether they were literal birds or a supernatural threat.
Practical service
The stories show Pullyang helping in ordinary and urgent moments. He gives Remo a place to sleep when Chiun is away, helps manage boats during a rescue at Sinanju, tends a sealed object in the House of the Masters, and tells Chiun that a thief may have entered the house. In another appearance, Chiun’s aged servant bows deeply and asks whether the villagers will hold a farewell feast.
The caretaker in a later succession crisis
The later succession story brings the familiar village caretaker Pullyang into the crisis: he is murdered, and the story identifies Hyunsil as his daughter. This adds a family and a death to the caretaker’s recurring role in Sinanju.
