The Sky Is Falling

A secret beam project opens holes in the ozone layer, and a Soviet missile crisis grows as both governments misread the other’s intent. Remo searches across Britain, San Gauta and Hanoi for the device while Chiun returns to Sinanju to recover the House’s stolen treasure.

At Chemical Concepts of Massachusetts, marketing director Reemer Bolt pushes commercialization while Dr. Kathleen O’Donnell designs and tests a fictional fluorocarbon beam generator that opens temporary ozone windows. Tests near Salem in New Hampshire, Malden in England, and later the Egyptian Sahara harm animals, disable electronics or glass sand, and are misread by Soviet Field Marshal Alexei Zemyatin as U.S. weapons tests. Smith sends Remo to investigate. In Britain Remo encounters MI-12 obstruction, a fictitious Source intelligence network compromised by Philliston, and reaches the Tower of London, where he rescues O’Donnell from KGB custody after killing Dimitri and other attackers.

O’Donnell withholds her own knowledge of the machine’s risks, gives Remo a false company lead, and takes him to San Gauta to confront Generalissimo Eckman-Ramirez, who hired her; the source does not establish that she knows the lead is false. Under pain and with O’Donnell prompting him, he claims to have sold the generator to Hanoi; Remo kills him, and the novel leaves the purported sale unconfirmed. Chiun returns to Sinanju after thieves steal the House’s treasure. He recovers a set of Alexander tribute coins auctioned in Paris and returns them to the village; the remaining treasure is still missing.

Cang initially directs Chiun’s suspicion toward the Pope, but Chiun reasons by the end of Chapter 8 that Cang is the thief; the dying Cang later confirms the deduction and reveals where he hid the treasure. In Moscow, the KGB follows Remo and sends Furtseva’s “blood faces” to kill him in Hanoi; Remo defeats them. Meanwhile Bolt’s car-painting test disables every vehicle’s electronics, and he pivots to glass production after discovering a market glut. After Remo leaves her, O’Donnell returns to Chemical Concepts, rigs two generators, and threatens the U.S. Northeast with a “doughnut” arc. Zemyatin deploys crude raw-button nuclear missiles and reads U.S. tests as preparation for an attack.

The President sends McDonald Pease to Moscow with U.S. missile-defense plans; the Soviets kill him and exploit a 48-hour delay before the raw-button missiles’ scheduled launch. Smith reveals Remo as the “weapon”; Remo parachutes into Moscow and forces Soviet leaders to sign statements. Zemyatin accompanies Remo to Massachusetts after they learn of O’Donnell’s two-beam threat. Cang, dying after taking poison, sends Chiun to the same site with information about the generator in exchange for a partial recovery of Sinanju treasure. O’Donnell demands Remo and is killed; Remo and Chiun destroy the generators. Zemyatin orders the raw-button missiles stood down, and Smith relays satellite confirmation; Remo then kills Zemyatin.

Chiun recovers only a silver statue, and Remo refuses to claim uncertain Korean ancestry. After “THE END,” a separate “Aftermath” coda says Bolt becomes president of a major corporation and Philliston receives a new assignment from the Source.

Spoilers
Chapter summaries18 chapters · spoilers
  1. Chapter 1

At Chemical Concepts, Bolt and O’Donnell develop a fluorocarbon stream generator; an unauthorized test opens an ozone window over a Soviet missile base, prompting Zemyatin to consider a first strike.

  2. Chapter 2

Remo confronts Robert Wojic over drug runners, then returns to find Chiun has killed three noisy hotel visitors. Smith explains the ozone event and new Soviet raw-button missiles; Chiun leaves for Sinanju after the annual gold tribute goes unclaimed.

  3. Chapter 3

The Malden test demonstrates the beam’s cross-Atlantic reach while harming animals and disrupting electronics. Remo’s Britain assignment meets obstruction from MI-12 and an unidentified station chief; the technicians give him a false Sunorama lead, which Remo establishes does not exist, while the real source points to America.

  4. Chapter 4

Chiun reaches Sinanju and discovers that armed thieves have emptied the House’s treasury. He confers with Sayak Cang, who honors Sinanju in North Korean schoolbooks and pledges his intelligence network to recovering the treasure; Chiun nevertheless prioritizes the books and the stolen goods over Smith’s crisis.

  5. Chapter 5

Zemyatin challenges a young KGB general’s unsupported confidence about O’Donnell and orders a search for the American operative; in anger he injures the general with a letter opener.

  6. Chapter 6

Remo enters the British Source through a castle escape tunnel, finds its head Lord Guy Philliston, and learns the organization is compromised by Philliston’s KGB contact. Philliston leads him to O’Donnell at the Tower of London.

  7. Chapter 7

KGB personnel set an ambush at the Tower. Remo kills Dimitri and others during O’Donnell’s rescue; O’Donnell withholds what she knows about the device, misleads Remo about the company, and takes him to San Gauta to pursue Generalissimo Eckman-Ramirez.

  8. Chapter 8

Chiun follows Paris’s auction of the Alexander tribute coins to SDEC director de Lyon, kills him and his guards, and returns the coins to Sinanju. North Korean submarines deliver a much larger gold tribute, but the House’s remaining treasure is still missing. Cang first directs Chiun’s suspicion toward the Pope; by the chapter’s end Chiun deduces that Cang is the thief. The dying Cang later confirms Chiun’s deduction and gives him the hiding place.

  9. Chapter 9

Petrovich leads a pre-armed raw-button battery toward a new base with orders to fire two weeks later absent a stop order. The CIA detects the battery’s readiness transmission. The President discusses the San Gauta lead with Smith, while the narrative separately says the generator is again being prepared at Chemical Concepts outside Boston. Zemyatin disciplines the KGB and orders a worldwide search for Remo, O’Donnell and the device.

  10. Chapter 10

Bolt’s board demands a market application. Remo and O’Donnell go to San Gauta, where they find Generalissimo Eckman-Ramirez; under pain, and with O’Donnell prompting him, he claims to have sold the generator to Hanoi. Remo kills the dictator; the source does not confirm that any sale occurred.

  11. Chapter 11

Bolt tests the generator on fifty cars near Chester, New Hampshire; the test yields a glossy paint finish but disables the vehicles’ electronics. The President selects billionaire physicist McDonald “Hal” Pease to carry U.S. missile-defense plans to Moscow as a confidence-building offer; the first diplomatic mission departs at chapter’s end.

  12. Chapter 12

Zemyatin reads the U.S. car test as proof that American forces can disable Soviet armor and missiles. Pease’s defense-plan offer does not change the Soviet position; the President redirects the U.S. search toward Boston while Remo is bound for Hanoi.

  13. Chapter 13

The chapter interleaves Zemyatin’s childhood service under Count Gorbatov and his mother’s abandonment during the revolutionary retreat with Remo and O’Donnell’s arrival in Hanoi under the International Media Committee cover. Zemyatin diverts the real estate treasure to the Bolshevik cause and enters Lenin’s secret police; in Hanoi, Remo begins looking for the device while the committee produces a staged pro-Hanoi report.

  14. Chapter 14

KGB commander Pytor Furtseva leads the “blood faces” against Remo. Remo kills the attackers and escapes; Ivanovich returns to Moscow with recordings of the failed operation.

  15. Chapter 15

Soviet bloc physical-training coaches review footage but cannot find Remo’s weakness. Zemyatin reasons that American testing in the Sahara signals a weapons-grade system and orders a 48-hour delay in disclosing that Soviet missiles are disabled, during which the missiles are scheduled to launch.

  16. Chapter 16

Bolt pivots from failed automotive paint and glass applications. Remo leaves O’Donnell in San Francisco and heads to Moscow; she returns to Chemical Concepts and configures two beams, including a “doughnut” area aimed at the Northeast, threatening to fire if anyone interferes.

  17. Chapter 17

Smith tells Russia that Remo is the U.S. “weapon.” Remo enters Moscow by parachute and penetrates government security, then meets Zemyatin. They learn the beam now threatens the polar ice and that O’Donnell’s second beam is rigged as a hostage device over the U.S. Northeast.

  18. Chapter 18

Ivanovich recruits Cang, who summons Chiun and dies after revealing the Boston device location. Remo, Chiun and Zemyatin reach Chemical Concepts; O’Donnell demands Remo and is killed. Remo and Chiun destroy the generator in a duel, Zemyatin stands down the missiles, and Remo kills him. The ending confirms the crisis ends but leaves Sinanju’s treasure unresolved.

Presidential clues

Current U.S. President: historical identity unresolved.

Unnamed incumbent U.S. President

U.S. incumbent who is one of the only people aware of Smith’s secret organization, summons Smith’s operatives, dispatches Pease to Moscow, and directs federal agencies to search for the device.

  • In America the President learns the Soviet Union will not share information about the crisis and summons the two operatives through the red phone (ch01:p0161–p0164).
  • The organization around Smith is so secret that only Smith and the President know it exists; Smith says the President shares his view that Remo and Chiun should be between humanity and extinction (ch02:p0102, ch02:p0138).
  • The President sends McDonald “Hal” Pease to Moscow with the U.S. missile-defense plans (ch11:p0096–p0102).
  • The President later assigns the search to public agencies after hearing the device is somewhere north of Boston (ch12:p0095).

The source gives no personal name or dated administration clues for the U.S. incumbent. It does not identify the incumbent as CURE’s founder, and it does not establish an external candidate. The unnamed predecessor who demonstrates the red phone is a separate role, not a second identified incumbent.
