Miss Purvish is Harold W. Smith’s secretary at Folcroft Sanatorium and a trusted observer of his conduct. The National Foundation for Scientific Research pays her to report monthly on Smith’s mental health; Smith separately arranges for her observations about his attitude and behavior to go directly to him.

Work for Smith

Smith arranges to receive Miss Purvish’s observations about his behavior so he can monitor whether the power of his office is affecting his judgment. She sends him regular observations about his attitude and conduct, bypassing the outside organization that pays her to check on his mental health. Her role is an informal, confidential check within Folcroft rather than field work.

[2]

Smith rotates secretaries through his outer office, and the novels describe Purvish as one of the semipermanent staff. He sometimes considers moving her back to the sanatorium because she is too curious about his work. Years later, Smith identifies Kathleen Purvish as a regular sanitarium employee who formerly served as his secretary and filled in during Mrs. Mikulka’s vacations.
