Wolf's Bane

When former Cajun Mafia witnesses and their families are attacked despite federal relocation, Remo and Chiun are sent to protect the last known survivor, Jean Cuvier. A neighbor’s account of a pack led by a hairy wolf-man complicates what first looks like a series of criminal reprisals. The investigation moves from Omaha to New Orleans during Mardi Gras, where Cuvier’s Cajun contacts, a Romany camp, and two gubernatorial campaigns intersect.

A series of attacks on former Cajun Mafia witnesses draws Remo and Chiun into an investigation spanning Michigan, Omaha and Louisiana. They trace the killings to imprisoned Armand Fortier’s network and the hired loup-garou Leon Grosvenor. In Leon’s retrospective, the narrator first describes his unusual birth hair condition and upbringing; Thena gives him diluted 942, and Leon later steals full-strength 942 and puts it in a field-camp water supply. Some students die, and the survivors transform into wolves. Remo identifies Thena as Dr. Judith White through Leon’s description of her regenerated arm. During Mardi Gras, the investigation intersects with a Romany camp and rival gubernatorial campaigns.

A hired team ambushes Remo, Cuvier and Aurelia at a bayou camp while Leon attacks Breen’s separate hunting party. Remo and Chiun kill the hired gunmen; Leon attacks Breen and his supporters, killing them, while Maynard flees and is narrated as swallowed by an alligator. The next account lists Maynard as missing and Jethro as a survivor. The pack also attacks Desire House and Reverend Marvin Rockwell’s revival; Remo kills Leon after learning that Fortier and Merle Bettencourt hired him. Leon’s remaining pack escapes, and the book leaves Judith unlocated. Rockwell survives with broken bones; three are reported dead and seventeen injured at the revival.

Fortier dies later while officers try to untie him after Remo leaves him paralyzed. CURE testing of the recovered animal corpse finds human and Mexican gray wolf DNA; Leon’s forensic report also shows skeletal changes and rapid-growth bone stress. Remo speculates that the missing pack went west, but its route remains unknown. Aurelia’s undated vision about Remo’s family remains unresolved.

  13. Chapter 13

The chapter intercuts the pack’s flight from Desire House with the woman’s memories of Jasper and her transformation. Leon recounts how Thena gives him diluted 942, he refuses her demand to kill the hermit, steals full-strength 942, contaminates a student field-camp water jug, and tends the students through the transformation; some die and the rest become wolves. The remaining pack’s later route is unknown.

  14. Chapter 14

Bettencourt hires Luke Severin’s men; separately, Breen leads campaign supporters on a political hunting trip with Jethro as guide.

  15. Chapter 15

Remo, Aurelia and Cuvier camp by a cabin cruiser while Chiun stays aboard. Leon leads the pack to encircle the clearing; a hired gunman attacks Chiun on the boat, and automatic fire then sweeps the camp from several positions. Remo lifts Aurelia into a tree, and Cuvier’s whereabouts are uncertain at the chapter break. The same chapter then shifts to Leon’s assault on Breen’s separate hunting camp.

  16. Chapter 16

The chapter intercuts the separate bayou fights. Leon attacks Breen’s hunting party: Breen fires on the wolves before Leon kills him, Maynard escapes into the water and an alligator swallows him, while Jethro flees toward the cruiser. At Remo’s camp, Remo kills hired gunmen and Cuvier later identifies Florus Pinchot, Claude Something and Remy Arridano among the dead.

  17. Chapter 17

Remo uses the crowded revival to protect Cuvier and Aurelia; Bettencourt’s team and Leon also arrive at the auditorium.

  18. Chapter 18

Leon attacks Reverend Rockwell at Mission Mardi Gras while Chiun confronts Bettencourt’s disguised gunmen. The panic scatters the congregation; Leon kills a uniformed guard, and Remo fights and kills Leon after hearing that Fortier and Bettencourt hired him. Remo identifies Thena as Judith White from her regenerated arm; Leon dies after his initially fatal-looking injuries. The chapter does not resolve the full crowd casualty count, later reported in chapter 20.

  19. Chapter 19

Remo finds Fortier in prison, tells him Leon and Bettencourt are dead, then breaks and knots Fortier’s limbs, leaving him alive but paralyzed.

  20. Chapter 20

At Folcroft, Mark reports that Fortier died while officers tried to untie him. Smith reports Breen and his supporters found dead, Maynard’s status as missing and Jethro’s survival; Rockwell is alive with major injuries. The briefing records three dead and seventeen injured at the revival. CURE has no lead to Judith; testing of the recovered animal corpse finds human and Mexican gray wolf DNA, while Leon’s report shows skeletal changes. Remo guesses the missing pack may have gone west, but its destination remains unknown; Aurelia’s vision also remains unresolved.

Presidential clues

No current or succession assessment is available; other retained presidential references remain in context.

Unnamed deceased CURE-founding President (Book 132)

John F. Kennedy (strong contextual allusion, not named in this book)

  • The narrator places CURE’s founding and Smith’s appointment in the early 1960s.
  • Retrospective narration describes the unnamed young, idealistic President forming CURE and appointing Smith as its director.
  • The narrator says the President was murdered in a motorcade while riding beside his young wife.

high for the source-described founder role; strong but unconfirmed historical allusion

Retrospective narration gives an early-1960s date, a motorcade assassination beside a young wife and the CURE founding, but withholds the President’s name. Treat JFK as a qualified contextual allusion, not an explicit identification.
