The Destroyer#42Timber LineThe DestroyerBook 421980
At a Sierra forest plantation, Remo and Chiun investigate attacks on a Brazilian oil-bearing tree project and the researchers trying to grow it in the United States. Suspicion falls on an environmental protest group, a disgruntled foreman and company leadership as violence escalates from sabotage to murder and arson.
During a Brazilian expedition, researcher Karl Webenhaus discovers the copa-iba tree but is murdered along with his wife, Helga; their daughter Joey survives and is rescued by Oscar Brack. Twenty years later, a grove of copa-iba trees in the Sierra is under attack. CURE sends Remo Williams, posing as a federal tree reclamation technician; Chiun joins him. Remo commits a mass killing at a Cleveland mob summit (63 deaths by his count), then maims television commercial performers without killing them, before moving to the forestry assignment. At the grove, two armed saboteurs cut the heaters; Remo diverts their gunfire, killing both, and pins foreman Peer LaRue to a tree.
A Mountain High Society candle march is to be used by six men to start a fire, but Remo disrupts it with a snowball fight while LaRue buries the would-be arsonists in a snowdrift. A bomb destroys the A-frame after a tape recording lures Remo away; Chiun saves Joey. Brack, badly wounded, tells Remo that Danny O’Farrell took money from “the Association” to sabotage the project, then tried to quit; Brack dies after attempting to save Joey. Joey explains her seed treatment can shorten germination from decades to weeks, and Chiun proposes a pine/black-silk compost system to create a warm, moist microclimate without fuel-burning heaters.
Mountain High assistant Ararat Carpathian kills Cicely Winston-Alright, then shoots LaRue and stages the scene to implicate him. Carpathian publicly blames a Tulsa Torrent lumberjack for Cicely’s death. As he flees Remo, he slumps over the controls and his snowmobile runs off a cliff; Remo finds him catastrophically injured. The forest fire is started by Roger Stacy, who is aligned with an oil-backed Association and wants to stop the grove; he recalls murdering Karl and trying to kill Helga. Chiun redirects Stacy’s attack with a gold lumberjack hook, killing him. Quibble is revealed as Lance Alright, Cicely’s ex-husband, who rejoined the Association and says Cicely had to die as a martyr and LaRue was needed as a scapegoat.
He admits killing Carpathian by injection to keep him from talking, leaving the tape lure, and planning to kill Joey and switch off the grove heaters. The timing of the injection and Carpathian’s cliff fall remains unreconciled. The text never directly establishes that Quibble set the A-frame bomb. Joey trips Quibble, and Remo kills him with LaRue’s axe. Smith confirms the tape belonged to Quibble. The fire is being fought and the grove’s new growing method is planned for trial, but its success is not shown.
Full articles
The Brazilian expedition’s discovery and violence are recounted; Brack returns with Stacy and finds Joey alive. The source does not establish Stacy as Helga’s killer.
Remo walks across Lake Erie, carries out a mass killing at a mob summit, then maims commercial performers without killing them. The chapter establishes CURE intelligence channels.
Chiun scolds Remo and narrates Sinanju lore. The narrative recounts an unnamed President founding CURE and appointing Smith, then explains the organization’s failed investigator model, and assigns Remo to investigate threats against the tree project and Joey.
Remo meets Stacy, gets a cover role, and reunites with Joey and Brack. The Mountain High protest threat and Joey’s skepticism about Remo are introduced.
Joey mourns Danny and suspects Remo may be working against the grove; Brack disputes Stacy’s inadequate security.
Remo intervenes when two armed men sabotage heaters and shoot at Peer LaRue; he redirects the gunfire and the attackers kill one another. He pins LaRue to a tree, then reports the two men dead and heaters cut off.
Quibble imposes a bureaucratic pay cut. Joey recognizes Remo’s cover as a performance; LaRue warns of Mountain High Society and Brack is found missing in a bloodied room.
Chiun identifies multiple blood trails; Remo and LaRue find a dying woodsman who names the Mountain High slogan, implicating but not proving the group responsible.
Remo overhears Cicely and Ari planning to start a fire during a candle march. His snowball attack disrupts the event while LaRue captures six men; Quibble complains about Remo’s conduct.
A planted tape lures Remo away as attackers bomb the A-frame. Chiun saves Joey; Remo later finds badly burned Brack, who reveals Danny’s betrayal and dies after trying to save Joey.
The bomb wreckage is buried; Joey is moved to Brack’s cabin, guards are doubled, and Remo and Joey discuss the mounting deaths.
Remo checks in with Smith, presses Cicely and learns little, then hears Joey’s seed treatment radically speeds germination and Chiun proposes a lower-energy pine/black-silk growing method. Ari murders Cicely.
Remo finds LaRue dying from Carpathian’s gunshots; LaRue dies after giving the “a rat” clue. Carpathian publicly blames a Tulsa Torrent lumberjack for Cicely’s death. Remo recognizes the clue as Arat and pursues Carpathian, who slumps at his snowmobile’s controls before it runs off a cliff. Remo finds him catastrophically injured; the later injection confession leaves the timing unreconciled.
Smith reports that the two dead heater saboteurs were Rhodesian nationals; Salisbury police only suspect contract-killer status. The forest is set alight; Remo and Chiun shelter Joey and create a firebreak. Stacy’s private thoughts reveal his role in the conspiracy; he denies the accusation when confronted. He attacks and dies by his redirected hook.
Remo finds Cicely’s photograph signed by Lance. Quibble confesses his identity, describes the oil-backed Association plot, and says Cicely was needed as a martyr, LaRue as a scapegoat, and that he killed Carpathian by injection; Joey trips him and Remo kills him with LaRue’s axe.
Smith confirms the tape trace; Remo reports that Quibble and Stacy are dead, and Smith asks Remo to give Joey his love. The story ends with Joey and Remo together.
