The Destroyer#10Terror SquadThe DestroyerBook 101973
A wave of unusually capable terrorist attacks threatens an international antiterrorism pact. CURE sends Remo to investigate, but evidence points beyond an ordinary terror cell: a young campus radical, cryptic Sinanju warnings and a rival who may be trying to draw Remo and Chiun into a trap.
During a hijacking by the Revolutionary Liberation Front of Free Palestine, the attackers kill cancer researcher Isadore Geleth and infant Kevin Miller and rape Kevin’s mother, Kathy; a later attack shows that terrorists have acquired striking but brittle competence. CURE director Harold W. Smith sends Remo Williams to Los Angeles, where Remo works with FBI agent Donald Peterson to stop a Utah plane hijacking and learns the hijackers’ stated names: the woman first claims Kahlala Waled, then gives Leronia Smith after he challenges her, while the third man continues to give the name Mustafa El Faquar; the novel does not confirm which of those names is genuine.
Remo follows their training clue to Patton College, where he meets Joan Hacker, a radical student who calls herself Starlight. She has helped the hijackers and is being drawn deeper into the operation by a small man later identified as Nuihc. Chiun recognizes the staged fat, thin and dead-animal warnings as signs from a Sinanju rival and tells Remo he may leave America’s service. Joan coerces former SS captain Oskar Gruenwald into trying to kill Remo and Chiun; Remo kills Gruenwald after learning who recruited him. Joan also draws in Rodney Pintwhistle, who secretly chooses not to betray Remo and Chiun. The plot broadens through People United to Fight Fascism and an intended attack on Teterboro Airport, while Smith deploys CURE personnel under cover.
Remo learns that three negotiators are meeting at Hotel Caribou and assumes they are the next targets; Chiun secretly saves them from three assassins before Remo can arrive. Joan warns that the UN delegates will be attacked and gives Remo the clue that leads him to the Museum of Natural History. There Nuihc, Chiun’s nephew and a rival trained in Sinanju, says that the terrorism, airport plot and apparent attack on the treaty negotiators were staged to separate the two masters and kill them. The apparent attack at the UN is really aimed at Chiun, while Nuihc expects to defeat Remo at the museum. Chiun kills the UN attackers and heads for the museum; Remo defeats Nuihc in a fight across a suspended whale exhibit.
Chiun arrives alive, but Nuihc escapes after Joan frees him and he fatally wounds her. The UN diplomats survive and the nations unanimously approve the antiterrorism pact. Remo and Chiun postpone pursuit of Nuihc to keep their promised Brooklyn visit, while the closing scene shows Kathy Miller choosing to turn toward life after the loss of her son.

Three colonels from the United States, Soviet Union, and China meet to negotiate an antiterrorism pact after a string of unusually capable attacks. Lt. Gen. Charles Whitmore tells U.S. Colonel Anderson that the President’s instruction is to proceed as though no new force exists; the President appears to expect a special response Whitmore does not know about. An airplane hijacking, rape and murder of passenger Kathy Miller, and killing of her infant Kevin make the threat immediate.
Remo trains with Chiun and discusses the history of his recruitment after a staged execution. Dr. Harold W. Smith briefs him on the new terror wave and sends him to Los Angeles to recover hostages and identify the hijackers; Chiun perceives Smith’s distress about the pact and the threat.
At Los Angeles Airport, Remo works with FBI agent Donald Peterson to board a Utah hijacking and rescue the passengers. He kills or ejects the armed hijackers and records the woman leader first giving the name Kahlala Waled and then, after Remo challenges it, Leronia Smith; a second gives Tyrone Jackson, later identified as using Kareem, while the third repeatedly gives Mustafa El Faquar. The text does not establish whether the woman’s or third man’s stated name is genuine. Peterson’s account of Remo’s lethal intervention is disbelieved by his superiors.
Remo travels east to Patton College near Seneca Falls, following the terrorists’ lead. Chiun criticizes Smith’s handling of Remo and interprets the training site and recent pattern as a sign that their service to America may need to end; Remo refuses to abandon the assignment.
Remo searches Patton College for evidence of the terrorists’ rapid training and meets radical student Joan Hacker, who calls herself Starlight. She says she supplied food and helped guard the hijackers during their one-afternoon training, and explains her revolutionary politics; her cocaine use and belief in the cause become apparent.
Chiun tells Remo a historical account of a Sinanju Master who gave peasants brief specialized training for an assault on a mountain palace; they failed when events departed from what they had been taught. At the woods by Patton, Chiun recognizes a Sinanju mark and says he will leave the service of the American “emperor.” Smith’s emotional strain also shows through.
At a Seneca Falls butcher shop, Joan Hacker threatens Henry Pfeiffer’s family to force him to kill Remo and Chiun. Pfeiffer reveals that he is former SS captain Oskar Gruenwald and recounts his participation in wartime killing; guilt has made him refuse murder, but Joan’s threat coerces him into agreeing.
Remo discovers Gruenwald aiming at Chiun and disarms him. After extracting Joan’s identity, Remo kills Gruenwald despite his promise to spare Joan; Chiun points out that the Sinanju warning marks have continued.
Joan draws in Rodney Pintwhistle, a frail student, as protection against Remo and Chiun. Rodney takes a knife to confront them, accepts Chiun’s assurance that they will not harm him, then lies to Joan about the meeting and secretly promises not to expose them.
Joan reports to a small, yellow-skinned Asian man at Patton’s stadium. He approves the staged warnings and her group’s training, discusses how temporary competence can be imparted to expendable recruits, and draws her further into the operation.
Smith complains to the unnamed President about Remo and the coming UN conference, and the two discuss the President’s pressure to secure peace. Colonel Huang recognizes Chiun’s warning sequence and recalls the Sinanju legend of two opposing Masters; although he suspects the attacks are linked to that legend, he chooses not to alert China’s present leadership.
Joan tells her wealthy roommate Millicent Van Dervander that she is leaving Patton, rips and destroys books in the shared dorm room, including Millicent’s, and heads to New York. Remo finds the group People United to Fight Fascism (PUFF) in the Village and connects it with the “dead animals” clue, then summons Chiun.
Remo and Chiun find Joan at The Bard in the Village. She describes a plan by PUFF to seize Teterboro Airport’s air-traffic-control tower and cause collisions, but Remo recognizes that her clues are drawing him into a larger plot; she names the “place of dead animals” only partially before he leaves to stop the operation.
Remo and Chiun discover CURE agents following them; F. G. Maher identifies himself as an IRS analyst; his co-worker Kirk is paired with him in the surveillance detail. Smith monitors the Teterboro operation from a van marked as a Red Cross wagon as a small group of suspected attackers approaches; Remo subdues an armed infiltrator at the tower. Smith reveals that the three treaty negotiators are meeting at Hotel Caribou, and Remo realizes the next attack is there.
Remo reaches the Hotel Caribou after hearing that three colonels have been killed. The point-of-view shift reveals that Chiun had arrived first, recognized and killed three would-be attackers, and secretly moved the colonels to safety; the diplomats remain alive and the conference is still possible. Chiun concludes that the apparent attacks are being shaped to draw Remo and himself into danger.
Remo challenges Chiun over the hotel attack; Smith arrives and dismisses him from the operation, convinced that his network and airport security measures can protect the conference. Chiun explains the two-Master legend and the dead-animal clue; Remo elects to continue acting despite Smith’s order.
Remo traces Joan through dentist Max Kronkeits and the dentist’s unnamed nurse, then confronts her at a coffee shop. She says that the delegates will die the next day; at a meeting of roughly twenty-five Gauchos, she pays for what is supposed to be a peaceful UN picket, but the group turns on Remo. Remo kills Carlo in the fight and persuades El Jefe to bring the group to the UN without attacking.
Joan gives Remo a clue pointing to the Museum of Natural History. Remo sends Chiun to protect the UN delegates while he goes to the museum; Smith’s state of mind and command decisions remain a source of tension between the two CURE operatives.
At the UN, Chiun notices a suspicious Army-uniformed detail and anticipates an attack. At the museum, Nuihc’s followers attack Remo and he fights his way through; he then confronts Joan and the man who identifies himself as Nuihc, Chiun’s nephew and rival student of Sinanju. Nuihc explains that the terror attacks were bait to bring Remo and Chiun into separate traps; he says the airport and treaty plots were designed to isolate them. He also explains that weapons were smuggled aboard aircraft openly as parts of metal wheelchairs and claims to be the new Master of Sinanju.
Chiun realizes the apparent terrorist assault is staged to isolate and kill him, not the diplomats. The disguised gunmen change into robes and draw pistols in a locked room; Chiun kills all twelve, then asks Smith for the location of the Museum of Natural History and commandeers P. Worthington Rosenbaum’s cab.
Joan watches as Remo and Nuihc fight across the gallery railing and onto the suspended whale model in the Museum of Natural History. A tissue Joan throws inadvertently disrupts Nuihc’s balance, allowing Remo to subdue him.
Remo binds Nuihc above the museum floor and learns that no diplomats were shot; Chiun arrives alive. Nuihc escapes after Joan unties him, then fatally injures her and leaves a threat for Remo. Joan dies in Remo’s arms. Smith reports the unanimous approval of the pact; Remo and Chiun put off pursuing Nuihc to keep their Brooklyn plan, and Kathy Miller turns from the news toward the possibility of a new pregnancy.

Terror Squad:
Publisher's description: A loose coalition of terrorist factions threatens to combine into a force beyond the capacity of conventional military responses.
Current U.S. President: historical identity unresolved.
The President receives Whitmore’s briefing about the unexplained terror attacks, tells Anderson through Whitmore to continue as if no new force exists, and is privately described as confident he has a special capability. Later he discusses the conference’s peace objective with Smith; Smith expects the President to want Remo’s view.
high for incumbent office and role; none for named identity
No reliable in-world clue identifies a real U.S. President. Publication year is not a story date.
Remo remembers being told that “a President” authorized the agency to use powers beyond constitutional limits to fight crime. This is an origin/authorization statement, not a direct claim that the present incumbent founded CURE.
high for a presidential authorization in the backstory; unknown whether same as incumbent
The novel supplies neither identity nor date, and does not directly say “founded by JFK” or otherwise name a creator.
