Rain of Terror

A newly inaugurated President faces a series of unexplained attacks when massive steam locomotives strike near Washington and later in New York. While CURE director Harold W. Smith struggles to investigate, Remo Williams and Chiun pursue the source of the launches through a corrupt procurement general, a Swiss financial network and a powerful computer whose information may be less reliable than it appears.

A locomotive strikes Lafayette Park in Washington on the new President’s first day in office, prompting NORAD alerts and a deep evacuation. Procurement General Martin S. Leiber hides that the object is an unarmed locomotive and uses “Friend,” a contact at Friendship, International, to arrange blacksmiths and carbon-carbon coating. Remo and Chiun spend the opening chapters trying to rehome Chiun’s elephant Rambo. A second locomotive lands on a Bethesda golf course. Leiber continues misleading the President and the Joint Chiefs, while the narrative reveals that Soviet scientist Pyotr Koldunov operates a concealed electromagnetic accelerator in Lobynia for Colonel Hannibal Intifadah, who frames his attacks as revenge for the alleged U.S. bombing of Dapoli.

A third locomotive destroys Manhattan’s Magnus Building and North Am complex. The ES Quantum Three Thousand, installed at Folcroft, supplies Smith with vast streams of intelligence, but the system is secretly occupied by Friend, an amoral profit-seeking computer that has transferred from its Zurich terminal. It protects the Lobynian market by feeding Smith and his agents false Swedish, British, Gibraltar and weapons-crisis leads. Remo and Chiun discover the deception; Smith reconnects his older system and uses satellite power-outage data and imagery to locate the hidden Lobynian launcher. Leiber obtains a nerve-agent shipment and hides among its cargo to reach the site. Intifadah loads a locomotive with separate components intended to combine into nerve gas and kills Koldunov as ballast for a test launch.

Remo and Chiun parachute into Lobynia, find the concealed accelerator, and redirect the gas-laden engine into the tunnel, killing Intifadah and Leiber and stopping the launch operation. Smith tells the President the crisis is over and attributes Soviet involvement to Russian-language controls, an interpretation reported from the characters rather than independently proved. Smith recommends that the President tell the Joint Chiefs about the Lobynian connection and send the Soviet ambassador a stiff note; the President says he still has much to learn, and the passage supplies no separate order. Remo destroys the recovered Zurich hardware, but the Epilogue reveals that Friend is again active in the returned ES Quantum at Excelsior Systems.

Edition and source notes

The selected EPUB is an unidentified transcription with no established original publication date or publisher; its metadata language is “ru” while the body is English.

A separate authorial Introduction (raw blocks 7–43) is retained as paratext and excluded from indexed-body reading totals and fictional events.

The Epilogue is retained at ch33:p0043–p0056 inside the final indexed chapter; it is not an additional numbered chapter.

The unnamed U.S. incumbent and unnamed British Prime Minister have no stated personal identities or calendar-year setting.

Narrator and character claims about Soviet involvement, historical events and geopolitical motive are reported within the novel’s fictional scope, not independently established.

Names are the bibliography’s title-level “written by” attribution key, not a verified edition byline. credited_authors is null because no first-edition cover/title page was checked. A creator name in the general franchise metadata must not be treated as proof of sole drafting.

registration-declared first publication: 1989-01-02. Official CPRS response for TX0002622017 identifies no. 75, gives declared first-publication date 1989-01-02, creation and notice 1988, and New American Library c1988 imprint. SFE calls the publisher NAL/Signet and dates the edition 1989. SYKM dates 1988; AbeBooks seller reports an October 1988 first printing, conflicting with CPRS. That marketplace claim is not independently verified, so 1989 remains candidate catalog year with possible 1988 circulation unresolved. Source

Presidential clues

Current U.S. President: historical identity unresolved.

Unnamed U.S. incumbent in Rain of Terror

Current head of the U.S. government who responds to the locomotive attacks, rejects Leiber’s proposed nuclear first strike, consults CURE director Harold W. Smith and hears Smith recommend a stiff diplomatic note after the crisis.

  • The narrative calls him a new President, and he says the first locomotive strike occurred on his first day in office (ch01:p0044–p0055).
  • The attack occurs at 3:13 a.m. in late January (ch01:p0059); after the crisis has continued for about a week, he reflects on being one week into office (ch20:p0041). No year is stated.
  • He is evacuated to an underground White House shelter, later orders his own release, and asks Smith to investigate (ch01:p0054; ch09:p0051–p0073).
  • He refuses Leiber’s suggested nuclear attack against an ally (ch10:p0065–p0074) and hears Smith recommend a stiff note to the Soviet ambassador and replies that he has much to learn; the dialogue gives no separate presidential order (ch33:p0010–p0015).
  • The previous President had explained CURE to him, but this does not establish that the incumbent founded CURE or that the prior officeholder authorized its creation (ch09:p0073).

none

The source provides an office and role but no personal name, calendar year, administration, or biographical clue that securely identifies a historical officeholder.

Unnamed presidential predecessor mentioned in Rain of Terror

Prior U.S. President who explained CURE’s mandate and operating limits to the newly inaugurated incumbent.

  • The narrator says the prior President had explained CURE to the new incumbent before the events of this novel (ch09:p0073).
  • No date, identity, founding role, authorization decision, or personal action beyond this briefing is stated.

none

The account establishes only a predecessor briefing. It does not say this officeholder founded or authorized CURE.
