At Robler Clinic outside Baltimore, anesthesiologist Daniel Demmet deliberately overdoses John Boulder during an appendectomy, making the IRS employee’s death look like heart failure. Assistant administrator Kathy Hahl is part of the cover-up. When Boulder's widow questions the official story, she is discouraged by her family doctor and lawyer. CURE director Harold W. Smith sends Remo Williams to protect IRS assistant director Nathan David Wilberforce, whose work threatens a Scranton scheme run by Anthony Stace, also known as Anselmo Stacio. Remo and Chiun return from a break in San Francisco and reach Scranton. Remo prevents an elevator-shaft attack and spots a possible arson plan, but Wilberforce catches a severe cold, is taken to Robler, and dies under Demmet’s care.

Remo’s own holiday-night pursuit eliminates several people in the attack chain, including Stace, while also rescuing a woman known as Pussy from abuse by bank president John Larimer, who is secretly “Sweet Johnny.” Smith reprimands Remo for the killings and redirects him to investigate suspicious medical deaths at Robler without indiscriminate violence. There Remo and Chiun pose as a wealthy patient and his physician, Dr. Park. Hahl’s scheme is revealed: she uses Demmet to kill selected patients, protected by professional silence and her control of the hospital’s fundraising network. She has also funded Dr. Hildie’s research into a synthetic protein that accelerates aging in animals.

The same effect appears in Stace and Mrs. Wilberforce, who rapidly age before dying. Hahl administers the substance to Demmet; he later falls from a fourth-floor ledge while saying he does not want to grow old. Remo discovers same-age animal pairs in the lab, one member of each pair visibly aged, and steals a sample. Hahl has Freddy and Al inject Remo with a larger dose and restrain him, but Chiun helps him recover through Sinanju training. Hildie explains the compound’s animal research but says she knows of no human trials. Freddy and Al mistake the aged-looking Chiun for Remo and attack him; Chiun kills both.

Hahl admits she means to sell the substance as a weapon against senior U.S. officials, potentially to foreign governments before a summit. Remo exposes her to the compound through soft tissue contact; he says he is immune. Hahl rapidly ages while Remo leaves her locked in her office, and the text does not confirm her later fate. Remo and Chiun depart Robler after a final dispute over Christmas gifts and the lobby tree. Chiun eventually wishes Remo Merry Christmas, and Remo responds sincerely.

  1. Chapter 1

Dr. Daniel Demmet deliberately kills John Boulder during an appendectomy by increasing the halothane dose and disguising the death as heart failure. At the hospital, Demmet and Kathy Hahl discuss the recent pattern of IRS patient “specials” without explaining it. Nancy questions the official heart-failure account and is discouraged from pursuing malpractice action.

  2. Chapter 2

During Remo and Chiun’s Christmas respite in San Francisco, Remo exercises on the Golden Gate Bridge and Chiun complains about his holiday gift. Smith interrupts their rest and assigns Remo to protect IRS assistant director Nathan David Wilberforce in Scranton after a string of suspicious deaths among IRS personnel. The conversation establishes CURE’s relation to the sitting President and its headquarters at Folcroft.

  3. Chapter 3

Remo joins Wilberforce under a time-study cover and prevents an attempted murder using an opened federal-building elevator shaft. Wilberforce treats the attack as a maintenance failure. Remo spots the oil burner at the Wilberforce home as the likely next attack vector and identifies the fallen attackers as Western assailants.

  4. Chapter 4

Scranton businessman Anthony Stace, also known as Anselmo Stacio and Mr. Big, uses his bank position to channel loan-sharking proceeds. Wilberforce’s IRS investigation threatens the scheme. After hired killers fail, Stacio consults Pietro Scubisci and approaches Robler Clinic, where Hahl offers a murder service disguised as fundraising support.

  5. Chapter 5

Remo follows the planned arson attempt to Marvin “The Torch,” then Nick Banno, John Larimer, and finally Stace. He kills the participants in the chain, kills Stace at his mansion, and rescues Pussy from a violent assault by Larimer and the other women. Remo’s pursuit exposes the Scranton loan-sharking and murder conspiracy; Wilberforce wakes with a severe cold.

  6. Chapter 6

The doctor who treats Wilberforce calls the illness pneumonia, but Demmet is brought in after complications and Wilberforce dies. Smith chastises Remo for the Scranton killings and sends him to investigate medical deaths without indiscriminate violence. Chiun frames American government as an imperial fiction while Remo reflects on his loyalty.

  7. Chapter 7

Mrs. Wilberforce confronts Hahl, who agrees to a quiet inquiry. The narrative explains how Hahl used Demmet and Robler’s institutional protection to build a lucrative assassination scheme; she now plans to test a new drug on Mrs. Wilberforce. Hahl injects Demmet with an unknown preparation through a ring during a sexual encounter.

  8. Chapter 8

Remo and Chiun enter Robler as patient Mr. Williams and physician Dr. Park. Remo plans to observe the hospital and draw out a killer rather than repeat his violent Scranton approach. Chiun remains upset over Remo’s refusal to obtain Barbra Streisand for him.

  9. Chapter 9

Demmet tells Hahl that he is tired of killing and worries about Mrs. Wilberforce. Hahl says Wilberforce must die because she may expose the hospital’s role in her son’s death. Hahl notices the wealthy “Mr. Williams” as a potential donor and possible target.

  10. Chapter 10

After Demmet sleeps with Mrs. Wilberforce, she develops a severe headache and wakes looking dramatically aged. She is taken to Robler and dies despite Demmet’s resuscitation effort. Remo recognizes her, observes Demmet’s reaction, hints at an IRS problem to Hahl, and decides to investigate Demmet. He connects the aging to Stace.

  11. Chapter 11

Smith confirms Demmet attended both Wilberforce and Boulder when they died. Remo reports the sudden aging of Stace and Mrs. Wilberforce. Unable to sleep because of Chiun’s snoring, Remo explores Robler at night and finds the restricted research-laboratory doors.

  12. Chapter 12

Remo breaks into Robler’s laboratory and finds pairs of same-age animals, one apparently young and one aged, including cats Clyde and Naomi. He releases several animals to distract lab guards Freddy and Al. Chiun, posing as Dr. Park, briefly relieves a patient’s stomach pain and argues with physicians about treatment.

  13. Chapter 13

Hahl tells Demmet that Remo is investigating him. Demmet refuses to kill again. Hahl seduces him and administers an experimental drug through a ring. Later Remo finds Demmet outside a fourth-floor window; Demmet falls to his death while saying he does not want to grow old. Whether the fall is deliberate, drug-induced, or both remains unclear.

  14. Chapter 14

Hahl identifies Remo as a government agent and lures him into a tour of the research labs. Freddy and Al instead inject Remo with a high dose of the aging substance and lock him in a straitjacket. Chiun guides Remo through a will-based exercise that makes him vomit and recover from the immediate effects. Remo identifies Hahl as the killer.

  15. Chapter 15

Remo returns to the laboratory and questions Dr. Hildie, who says she developed a synthetic protein that accelerates aging in animals and that she knows of no human experiments. Remo takes a sample. Believing Chiun is Remo aged by the drug, Freddy and Al attack Chiun; Chiun kills both.

  16. Chapter 16

Hahl admits her plan was to sell the aging substance as a weapon against senior government officials, possibly to foreign governments before a summit. Remo transfers the lab substance to her through skin and other soft tissue during sex; he claims immunity, while Hahl rapidly ages. Remo leaves her locked in her office; her fate is not confirmed on-page.

  17. Chapter 17

Remo confronts Chiun over the bodies at Robler, but Chiun remains absorbed in his television drama and the argument about the Christmas tree. They leave the cleanup to the hospital and Smith. A guard tells Chiun the tree is beautiful; Chiun dismisses his newfound appreciation. Chiun wishes Remo Merry Christmas, and Remo accepts.

Edition and source notes

Names are the bibliography’s title-level “written by” attribution key, not a verified edition byline. credited_authors is null because no first-edition cover/title page was checked. A creator name in the general franchise metadata must not be treated as proof of sole drafting.

Murder Ward:

Publisher's description: A clinic administrator and anesthetist profit from suspicious operating-room deaths, and a CURE-connected patient brings Remo into the case.

Presidential clues

Current U.S. President: historical identity unresolved.

The unnamed President and CURE’s secrecy

The generic national President is included among the very small number of people who know CURE exists. Remo and Smith discuss the hypothetical risk of a President staying in office forever or exposing CURE; this is not a scene with the President and supplies no identity.

  • The narrative says CURE’s activities are known to Smith, Remo, and “whoever happened to be President at the time.”
  • The subsequent exchange is hypothetical: Remo asks what if the President stays in office forever or exposes the organization. Smith says the President would appear insane if CURE were exposed.
  • No name, party, administration, story year, or biographical clue appears.

high that the line concerns the generic incumbent office; none for a real-world identity

This is a generic constitutional office reference, not evidence for a named character or a CURE founding/authorization President. Publication date cannot establish story date.
