The Destroyer#22Brain DrainThe DestroyerBook 221976
A grotesque murder scene in Greenwich Village leaves Inspector Jake Waldman looking for its pattern. Elsewhere, Remo goes undercover to retrieve data that a Folcroft computer operator says exposes a hidden organization; after the material is copied and Smith is attacked, Remo and Chiun seek the source of a dangerous unseen threat.
New York detective Jake Waldman investigates a room where four artists have been mutilated and their brains removed, then is killed by a fake patrolman, Gilbys. Remo, posing as a reporter, intercepts Folcroft computer operator Arnold Quilt, who presents what he believes is coded evidence of a covert organization and one killer. Remo kills Quilt and the armed revolutionaries selling his work, then gives the remaining Tucson data to Smith. Smith is injured by an exploding statue and abducted from hospital by Mr. Gordons, an android built for survival that can change its appearance but lacks creativity. After interrogating Smith, Gordons hires Dr. Caldwell to investigate creativity in brains.
Caldwell says the requested creative signal cannot be transferred; Gordons later confines him in a refrigerator, and Caldwell’s fate is not shown. Gordons recruits Hollywood agent Wanda Reidel, who uses threats to assemble a film package and pressure actor Rad Rex into signing with her. She also arranges for Rex to deliver a message that brings Chiun to Hollywood while Remo confronts her. Remo takes and burns the nine CURE documents Wanda says Gordons gave her (eight copies and the original); Wanda attacks him with a pistol and is killed when Remo blocks its barrel with a poker. Gordons lures Chiun to a Western set and attacks with revolvers, but Remo and Chiun locate and short out its relocated circuits in the heel, then dismantle the android.
Chiun infers that a weight-sensitive bomb remains in Smith’s room and frees him remotely by testing his theory; experts contain the later blast. Remo and Chiun leave Hollywood as a funeral procession for Wanda passes.
