Lords of the Earth

An environmental campaigner’s public cause conceals a campaign of murder and an experiment with insects. As Remo and Chiun investigate attacks on an international crop-research lab, the threat shifts from a beetle-control demonstration to a transformed fly whose consequences reach the team in Africa.

Crop-duster Winston Hoag is killed by a camera weapon installed for Waldron Perriweather III, who publicly fronts the Species Liberation Alliance while secretly cultivating insects. Remo destroys stolen CURE files and kills the two computer businessmen who took them; Chiun kills a salesman who erased his accounting work. Smith sends them to protect Dr. Ravits and the IHAEO lab. Ravits is murdered in a sealed lab, and an earlier scene shows an unnamed sitting U.S. President ordering the FBI replaced with CURE; a different deceased President is said to have selected Smith. Nathan and Gloria Muswasser attempt a TNT bombing, but the defective device is found and removed.

In Uwenda, Ravits’s pheromone draws Ung beetles into a fatal swarm, while delegates are later killed by unusually strong chimpanzees. Perriweather and the Muswassers are behind a separate biological agent. Remo finds and defuses a stolen portable nuclear device. Perriweather and Morley have bred red-wing flies whose bite changes animal and human strength and behavior. The Muswassers transform and are killed by Remo and Chiun; Morley’s fate remains uncertain. Barry Schweid studies the evidence and temporarily uses the breathing method to gain exceptional strength. The fly delivered to Remo and Chiun is dead. In Uwenda a fly transforms Amabasa Ndo; he kills his brother, the General for Life, a soldier and Barry before Chiun kills him.

A later fly bites Remo, who resists the loss of control and kills Perriweather in a jeep crash. The escaped flies die in ordinary air. One week later Smith confirms the explanation, Dara leaves without learning Remo survived, and Smith mourns Barry.

Selected EPUB metadata has no publication date or publisher; the inventory classifies it as an unidentified transcription.

The EPUB language metadata is “ru” although the narrative is English.

Full indexed-text coverage does not authenticate a licensed print edition or establish completeness against a published edition.

Names are the bibliography’s title-level “written by” attribution key, not a verified edition byline. credited_authors is null because no first-edition cover/title page was checked. A creator name in the general franchise metadata must not be treated as proof of sole drafting.

Presidential clues

Current U.S. President: historical identity unresolved.

Unnamed incumbent U.S. President

The sitting U.S. President who, after Smith requests it, orders FBI protection withdrawn and CURE to take over; in a later press statement he accepts responsibility for ordering the FBI withdrawal.

  • In a direct conversation Smith asks the President to call off the FBI and give CURE responsibility for lab protection; the President considers the request and nods.
  • In a later press statement, the President says he ordered the FBI withdrawn and takes full responsibility.

none

The text gives no personal name, administration, date, or other uniquely identifying historical clue. Do not infer from the EPUB release date.

Unnamed deceased President who selected Smith to run CURE

John F. Kennedy (qualified series-context inference; unnamed in Book 61)

  • Smith says that many years earlier a now-dead President chose him to run the new organization.

moderate cross-book inference; identity is not stated in Book 61

Book 61 itself does not name the deceased selector. Book 26 explicitly attributes CURE’s origin to John F. Kennedy and describes him arranging the secret CURE appointment/budget (ch01:p0148, p0150), supporting a series-context identification while preserving the Book 61 observation as unnamed.

Claude Ndo, President for Eternity of Uwenda

Claude Ndo

  • The source calls Claude Ndo the President for Eternity of Uwenda (ch08:p0064).
  • A Soviet general identifies Claude as cousin of IHAEO director general Amabasa Ndo (ch08:p0065).

not applicable; named fictional officeholder

This is a named fictional leader, included here to prevent confusion with the U.S. presidential observations.
