Tochala Delit is an Israeli security official and the deputy responsible for Zhava Fifer, a nuclear-security agent. He serves in Zeher Lahurban, an organization whose archaeological work conceals its nuclear-security role. In The Destroyer #27, The Sky Is Falling, Delit’s public identity is revealed as a cover for Horst Vessel, a former SS officer who has spent decades building a Nazi conspiracy inside Israel.
A concealed past
As Delit, Vessel occupies a position of trust in the very state he despises. He trained four former Nazis to assume Jewish identities and infiltrate Israel, using their specialized abilities in a shared scheme of destruction. His associates include Fritz Barber, who lives as Dr. Moishe Gavan; Helmut Dorfmann, who takes the identity Irving Markowitz; Joseph Brunhein, who becomes Ephraim Hegez; and Leonard Essendorf, who becomes Ben Isaac Goldman. The disguise is not only personal: the infiltrators’ apparent biographies and security roles help them conceal their collective plan.
The Sodom bomb plot
Delit obstructs the investigation as murders and attacks threaten Israel’s nuclear security. He tells his superior Yoel Zabari that the deaths and assaults are unrelated, even though he is directing the conspiracy. The plot’s evidence includes a nuclear bomb trigger supplied by Gavan, a trail of common biology books, and a poem Delit left behind. Chiun translates the poem for Remo—admitting that he has altered his own version—and Zhava Fifer interprets its reference to the khamsin wind as pointing to the Sodom installation.
At the plant, Delit enters alone, sends away the technicians and silences the protective systems. Wearing the SS uniform he had hidden beneath his clothes, he reveals that he intends the bomb to destroy Israel and calls his project the creation of a Fourth Reich. His explanation draws on antisemitic ideology and his claim that the world itself wants Jews dead; these are Delit’s rationalizations, not the narrator’s account of why the attack occurs. He admits killing Hegez, Goldman and Gavan and sending Palestinian attackers and Dorfmann against Remo and Chiun.
Death and failed attack
Delit claims that the bomb cannot be neutralized once activated, but the claim does not prevent the agents from reaching it. Zabari, horrified by his deputy’s betrayal, strangles Delit during the confrontation. Chiun disables the device, and the timer reaches zero without an explosion. The later disposal of Delit’s body behind enemy lines is not the manner of his death: the book explicitly shows him dying at Zabari’s hands.
