Lee Enright Leahy is a U.S. Navy submarine captain who commands the USS Darter and transports Chiun on secret trips into East Asian waters. He believes the deliveries are CIA missions, though no one tells him their purpose.
Submarine missions
Leahy makes repeated trips to carry gold and a passenger into East Asian waters. He believes the missions are directed by the Central Intelligence Agency, although the text presents this as his assumption. On one trip he brings Chiun, whose luggage and interest in television programs complicate the practical details of the submarine’s passage.
Leahy later recalls making the run from San Diego to Sinanju harbor each November for more than a dozen years. He says no one explained the mission: he first assumed it was a CIA operation, then concluded it must be directed by the National Security Council.
