Dr. Mordaunt Gregorian is a retired pathologist who calls assistance to people seeking death “medicide.” A television report says he has assisted in twenty-eight suicides. Remo considers confronting him, but Chiun says Gregorian provides a necessary service and tells Remo to leave him alone.
A strange practice
Gregorian runs an office that fields requests from patients, reporters and lawyers. He charges for his work and speaks bluntly about it, including an offer to help an elderly man with Alzheimer’s for one thousand dollars. He says he regards medicide as a way to relieve suffering.
An uncertain ending
After learning he may have contracted HELP and faces arrest for an unauthorized murder, Gregorian prepares to use his own medicide machine. Chiun interrupts with a rebuke. Police cannot tell by appearance whether Gregorian is dead, but the closing sentence calls him a corpse and puts him in a body bag.
